The Georgian Bay shoreline including the Grotto, Halfway Log Dump and surrounding trails is a popular area of the park. Parking is limited and a parking reservation is required to access these areas. Plan ahead to avoid disappointment!
Driving in and dropping off visitors is not allowed. All vehicles require a valid permit to enter each area.
Book parking for the Grotto and Halfway Log Dump in advance. Other first-come, first served parking lots in the park fill early each morning. Once parking lots are full, there is no other access to the park. We do not recommend travelling to the park without a reservation.

Rangers and campers from nearby parks frequent the hot springs, which are also a hangout for hippies and locals who occasionally enjoy bathing in the buff. The springs are located on parkland, and camping is permitted along the dirt road.
Getting There: Travertine Hot Springs is about two hours south of Reno. Take Route 395 south of Bridgeport for half a mile, then turn left at Jack Sawyer Road and follow the dirt road for about one mile.

Goldmyer Hot Springs, Near North Bend, Washington
For hot springs soakers who want assurances that their natural hot pot won’t be overrun with crowds or littered with empties, Goldmyer is the place. These wilderness springs in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains east of Seattle are owned by a nonprofit organization that limits visitation to only 20 people each day. There are rules: No dogs, no alcohol, and no smoking. Reservations are required and need to be made at least two weeks in advance. You also will need a Northwest Forest Pass to access the trailhead. But the restrictions, enforced by live-in caretakers, help keep the peace in this wilderness area of an ancient forest, with trees that are more than 900 years old. It’s a 4.5-mile hike (about two to three hours), mountain bike ride (about one to two hours), or snowshoe trek to the springs, which emerge from inside an old horizontal mine shaft and cascade into several pools. Overnight camping is only an additional $5.
Getting There: From Seattle, the springs are about a two-hour drive east. Take I-90 to exit 34 and then head north to Middle Fork Road, a gravel drive that continues for about 15 miles to the Dingford Creek Trailhead. Goldmyer Hot Springs advises using the directions on the website and not a GPS. Check the website for up-to-date directions and information on visiting these hidden hot springs.
Editor’s note: Be sure to check conditions for the access road to the hot springs, especially in winter. While the springs may be open, access to them may not be.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs, Steamboat Springs, Colorado
For weary Steamboat Springs skiers and hikers, the Strawberry Park Hot Springs in the Routt National Forest are healing for body and soul, just as they were for the Ute Indians centuries ago. In the early morning light when the sun edges over the mountain ridge, bathers are treated to a billowy vapor that Native Americans claim contains their creator’s essence. An encounter is said to rejuvenate the soul, which is one of the reasons this spot is a favorite of Debbie Frazier, author of Colorado’s Hot Springs guide. Deer and foxes often visit the springs, leaving behind prints in the surrounding sand. After dark, children are not allowed. Stay on-site in one of the rustic cabins or in a renovated train caboose, or camp out at the tent site.
Getting There: From Steamboat Springs, follow County Road 36 north for about seven miles until it turns into a dirt road. From November through May, you’ll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle or tires with chains. Shuttles run from Steamboat Springs.

- Access into the Grotto cave is closed since physical distancing is not possible. The view of the cave can still be enjoyed from above.

The Georgian Bay shoreline including the Grotto, Halfway Log Dump and surrounding trails is a popular area of the park. Parking is limited and a parking reservation is required to access these areas. Plan ahead to avoid disappointment!
Driving in and dropping off visitors is not allowed. All vehicles require a valid permit to enter each area.
Book parking for the Grotto and Halfway Log Dump in advance. Other first-come, first served parking lots in the park fill early each morning. Once parking lots are full, there is no other access to the park. We do not recommend travelling to the park without a reservation.

What can I see in 4 hours?
The hike to the Grotto, Indian Head Cove and the Georgian Bay shoreline is roughly one hour round trip. This provides more than enough time to explore the area before returning to your car.
Walking on Cyprus Lake Road is not allowed due to safety concerns.
Campers staying at the Cyprus Lake Campground can hike to the Grotto from their campsite.
Visiting Halfway Log Dump shoreline

Hike to Pink Canyon in Valley of Fire State Park

Pink Canyon is an unmarked canyon in Valley of Fire State Park. A great way to avoid crowds, and easily one of Nevada's most beautiful geological displays. You don't want to miss this one.
Valley of Fire is a place that will exceed your expectations. It’s kind of small but packs a punch. Just an hour outside of Vegas, it’s the perfect retreat for anyone who is in need of a reprieve from the city lights.
Anyone who has heard of this park is likely familiar with the Fire Wave . What you probably haven’t heard about is Pink Canyon. A lesser known, and equally stunning, attraction. True to its name, the canyon walls radiate soft shades of pink hues in every direction. You’ll also see shades of yellow, orange, and white. A delightful palette of pastel hues that pleases the senses at any time of day.
With the amazing vibrancy of colors you see everywhere else in the park, it’s a nice change of pace.
This canyon boasts all kinds of abstract shapes. The sculpted sandstone and geological scripts lend themselves well to the creative interpreter. I live in “canyon country” and even I’m impressed by this canyon. It captures you and keeps pulling you back in.
The hike itself is easy, and short. It can get a little tight in a few spots, but not so tight you have to walk on walls or gear up for canyoneering. If it has rained recently, prepare for a few tiny puddles, but you should be able to walk around them.
The weather in the summer can be very hot, often above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and wear shoes with rubber soles.
If you want to avoid crowds, this is a great option. It’s not a marked trail so most people don’t know it’s there.
If you’re camping there, stay at the Atlatl Rock campground. Campsite #22 is the best site in the park (confirmed by park rangers).
To get there:
From Valley of Fire Hwy, take the turnoff onto White Domes/Mouse’s Tank Rd (toward the Visitor Center). Take a left turn at the split from the visitor center, to continue North up White Domes/Mouse’s Tank Rd.
Go 3.9 miles up White Domes/Mouse’s Tank road, to wash sign #5. It will be the second dip, just past the 4th “Dip” sign. Park just off the highway. You should see the mouth of the canyon when you step out of your car and start walking toward the canyon walls (East).
Note: There is a $10 entrance fee into the park. Well worth it.
