Look! Up in the Sky!
Its red track dominates the Six Flags America skyline. Just looking at the super-high and steep first drop of Superman from a distance gets your adrenaline pumping. Up close, it takes more than a bit of nerve to hop into line and board the super-sized ride.
The coaster cars have elevated seats and low-slung sides. Instead of an over-the-shoulder harness (there are no inversions), an unobtrusive seat belt and a single ratcheting safety bar add to the car's open and exposed feeling—the better to scare the daylights out of you.
The coaster has a traditional lift hill (as opposed to an elevator cable-style lift or some kind of launch system). The train click-clack-clicks up, up, and WAY up, until it seems it should be approaching the planet Krypton. Then all hell breaks loose. Superman delivers a delirious high-speed first drop followed by an equally exquisite second drop. There is a nice pop of airtime just before the second drop.
From there, the coaster loses a bit of its oomph. Superman certainly doesn't limp along, but the second half of the ride, featuring an over-banked double helix, doesn't pack the same punch as its first act. To coaster fans like us, it's a waste of kinetic energy to take a 73-mph train and send it racing in circles.
Superman is essentially similar to the Ride of Steel ride at Darien Lake in New York. The park was owned and operated by Six Flags when it debuted the ride, and it was also known as Superman: Ride of Steel at that time. Six Flags sold the park, and the Superman branding was removed. In 2018, Six Flags repurchased Darien Lake, but did not restore the Superman name to its marquee ride.
The Superman coaster at Six Flags New England (which also used to be known as Superman: Ride of steel; after a couple of name changes, it is now called Superman the Ride), is a second-generation version of the ride and is, in our opinion, not only a marked improvement over the Maryland and New York thrill machines, but our pick for one of the best steel coasters period. It minimizes the helices, adds a second tunnel (that is filled with fog!), and keeps the airtime and thrills coming.
All three coasters were designed and manufactured by master ride makers Intamin of Switzerland. The New England version is taller, faster, and positively screams to the end. It is also better located in that park for maximum visibility. The Six Flags America Superman is set back and is in a more remote section of the park. Its relative speed feels slower without other rides and crowds of onlookers rushing past.
The Maryland coaster is, however, wonderfully smooth. It does include a few great bunny hills that deliver some nice brief spurts of air time. More of those would have made the ride even more super.
Taking Swings at a Myth, With John Henry the Man
In the American mythic pantheon, John Henry stands right at the top, alongside Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill. Virtually every schoolchild knows the tale, transmitted through song, story or animated cartoon, about the doomed railroad worker who bests a mechanical drill only to die at the moment of victory.
In “Steel Drivin’ Man,” Scott Reynolds Nelson argues that the John Henry story was no tall tale, and Henry himself no myth. Historians have long speculated that the John Henry ballads, which began circulating in the 1870’s, referred to a real railroad worker, but Mr. Nelson, with extensive documentation in hand, proposes a candidate. His John Henry is a former Union soldier, imprisoned for theft while on a work assignment in Richmond, Va., and leased out with other inmates to blast tunnels through the Allegheny Mountains for the new Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.
Do the facts add up? Maybe. Mr. Nelson, an associate professor of history at the College of William and Mary, stumbled on his evidence while writing “Iron Confederacies,” a study of Southern railroads during Reconstruction. In the early 1870’s, he found, large numbers of convicts from the Virginia State Penitentiary died while working on the C&O Railway. Recalling a version of the John Henry ballad with the lines, “They took John Henry to the white house, and buried him in the san’,” he made a connection: the main building of the penitentiary was white. Nearby, in 1992, workers demolishing the prison had dug up about 300 skeletons. Mr. Nelson ransacked state archives and came up with the name of a prisoner: John William Henry.
The historical record is sketchy, but most of the verifiable facts about Mr. Nelson’s John Henry make him plausible as the real steel-driving man. First, of course, is the name. In addition, Henry worked on the team assigned to drill the Lewis Tunnel in West Virginia, where steam drills were put to the test against workers with hammers. By 1874 he has disappeared from prison records, with no mention of pardon, parole or release, strongly suggesting that he died while working on the railroads and not inside the prison, where his death would have been recorded.
So who was John Henry? Mr. Nelson can do no more than offer a tantalizingly incomplete biography. He was from New Jersey and, in some capacity, worked for the Union Army at City Point, a landing near Petersburg, Va., in 1866, when he was 18. In April of that year he was arrested for stealing from a grocery store and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was sent to the Virginia State Penitentiary, where the warden, desperate to raise revenue, had begun leasing prisoners to the railroad for 25 cents a day. John Henry was one.
Mr. Nelson’s railroad expertise serves him well. He explains in detail what tunnel drilling involved, both for manual workers with hammer and chisel and for the new steam drills that promised a cheaper, quicker way to bore the holes that workers filled with blasting material. The hammer man worked in partnership with a shaker, who would hold a chisel-like drill against mountain rock, while the hammer man struck a powerful blow with a sledgehammer. Then the shaker would begin rocking and rolling: wiggling and rotating the drill to optimize its bite. Work songs like the early John Henry ballads, often rhythmic chants with no melody, set the pace and synchronized the movements of hammer man and shaker.
As Mr. Nelson tells it, the contest between worker and machine was less than equal. A smoothly coordinated human team had an advantage over the early drills, which constantly broke down. The machines were highly efficient, however, at generating clouds of silicon dust. Contrary to the picture presented by the ballads, John Henry would have died not of exhaustion or a burst heart, but of silicosis, a fatal, fast-moving lung disease that took the lives of hundreds of railroad workers.
How John Henry, a small man even for the time, became the muscled superman of legend remains mysterious. After carefully laying out the historical record and recreating, in the book’s most absorbing chapters, the world of the railroad workers, Mr. Nelson simply takes his leave of John William Henry, without comment. The rest of the book recounts the history of the John Henry ballads, and their hero’s transformation from man to myth. Mr. Nelson tells this part of the story mechanically, and often repetitively, with annoying first-person digressions.
There is a John Henry for every constituency. White Southern millworkers, listening to country recordings of the ballads that never mentioned Henry’s race, assumed he was a white man whose plight resembled their own. Any worker facing the new world of mechanized labor understood the John Henry story. For coal miners he was a miner; for railroad workers he was a trackman; for Communist organizers he was “the hero of the greatest proletarian epic ever created.”
Civil rights workers saw him as an emblem of black oppression and defiance. Mr. Nelson even argues, rather unconvincingly, that John Henry’s powerful physique served as the model for comic-book superheroes like Captain America.
What Mr. Nelson proves is the undying power of the John Henry myth, which reduces almost to a pinpoint the historical figure he resurrects from the archives. Whether or not John William Henry is the man seems almost irrelevant. He is a fascinating guide to the world of the Southern railroads and the grim landscape of Reconstruction. But the real story, and the real John Henry, come to life after his death.

Superman: Ride of Steel Review

The highlight of Six Flags America, Superman: Ride of Steel is a great coaster with an exhilarating and, er, super first drop.
- Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 7.5. Extreme height, acceleration, and speed (although there are no inversions).
- Type: Out and back steel hypercoaster.
- Height: 197 feet.
- First drop: 205 feet.
- Max. speed: 73 mph
- Ride time: 2:10.
- Height restriction (minimum, in inches): 52.
Look! Up in the Sky!
Its red track dominates the Six Flags America skyline. Just looking at the super-high and steep first drop of Superman from a distance gets your adrenaline pumping. Up close, it takes more than a bit of nerve to hop into line and board the super-sized ride.
The coaster cars have elevated seats and low-slung sides. Instead of an over-the-shoulder harness (there are no inversions), an unobtrusive seat belt and a single ratcheting safety bar add to the car's open and exposed feeling—the better to scare the daylights out of you.
The coaster has a traditional lift hill (as opposed to an elevator cable-style lift or some kind of launch system). The train click-clack-clicks up, up, and WAY up, until it seems it should be approaching the planet Krypton. Then all hell breaks loose. Superman delivers a delirious high-speed first drop followed by an equally exquisite second drop. There is a nice pop of airtime just before the second drop.
From there, the coaster loses a bit of its oomph. Superman certainly doesn't limp along, but the second half of the ride, featuring an over-banked double helix, doesn't pack the same punch as its first act. To coaster fans like us, it's a waste of kinetic energy to take a 73-mph train and send it racing in circles.
Superman is essentially similar to the Ride of Steel ride at Darien Lake in New York. The park was owned and operated by Six Flags when it debuted the ride, and it was also known as Superman: Ride of Steel at that time. Six Flags sold the park, and the Superman branding was removed. In 2018, Six Flags repurchased Darien Lake, but did not restore the Superman name to its marquee ride.
The Superman coaster at Six Flags New England (which also used to be known as Superman: Ride of steel; after a couple of name changes, it is now called Superman the Ride), is a second-generation version of the ride and is, in our opinion, not only a marked improvement over the Maryland and New York thrill machines, but our pick for one of the best steel coasters period. It minimizes the helices, adds a second tunnel (that is filled with fog!), and keeps the airtime and thrills coming.
All three coasters were designed and manufactured by master ride makers Intamin of Switzerland. The New England version is taller, faster, and positively screams to the end. It is also better located in that park for maximum visibility. The Six Flags America Superman is set back and is in a more remote section of the park. Its relative speed feels slower without other rides and crowds of onlookers rushing past.
The Maryland coaster is, however, wonderfully smooth. It does include a few great bunny hills that deliver some nice brief spurts of air time. More of those would have made the ride even more super.

From custom builders in small communities to multi-national corporations that distribute across the world, Canada has it all when it comes to bicycle companies. Whether you are looking for a bike built for speed or to tackle the country’s most technical trails, a Canadian bike company makes it.
Here is a list of Canadian bicycle brands, organized alphabetically, and a little about each of them.
Altruiste Bikes
Altruiste Bikes recently recieved a lot of attention for winning the Best Mountain Bike and Best in Show award at the 2018 edition of the North American Handmade Bike Show (NAHBS). The Notre-Dame, N.B. based company offers hand made custom steel gravel, road, kids and mountain bikes.
Argon 18
Founded by retired cyclist Gervais Rioux in Montreal in 1989, Argon 18 has grown to distribute bikes aross the world and sponsors a number of professional cycling teams and triathletes. In 2019, Argo 18 sponsores Hugo Houle’s UCI WorldTour team Astana.
Aquila Cycles
Aquila is the in house brand of Oakville and Toronto based bike shop Racer Sportif. The company offers carbon road, triathlon and track bikes that have been ridden by Canadian development squad Team RaceClean as well as by Canadian track athletes on the international circuit.
Banshee
Banshee Bikes is a B.C.-based brand specializing in enduro, DH and trail bikes. With a long history on Vancouver’s North Shore, Banshees are designed tough to take the abuse of everyday riding, from enduro races to laps of the Whistler Bike Park.
Berg Bikes
Al Bergman began building bikes in 2005. A promising young mountain biker, he was injured when he fell off a cliff while fighting a forest fire in 2000. He became a paraplegic after the accident but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing his passion for sport competing in the wheelchair marathon at the 2004 Paralympics in Greece. Berg Bikes based in Victoria offers road, dual suspension mountain bikes and city bikes.
Bonavia Cycles
Ross Allan is the builder behind Bonavia Cycles. The company has been building lightweights and bespoke bicycles since the 1970’s. Allan took over the building operation in 2007 after an 18 month apprenticeship with Clive Bonavia in South West London. Bonavia builds lugged or fillet brazed road, ‘cross and touring frames in Vancouver.
Brodie Bicycles
Founded by Paul Brodie in 1986, Brodie Bicycles began manufacturing custom steel hardtail mountain bikes in Vancouver. They expanded into making complete bikes and working with aluminum to expand their offerings. Brodie now has a catalogue of dozens of models from trail to commuter through to road and cyclocross.
Cachet Bicycle Company
Cachet Bicycle Company is a North Bay, Ont. based street and dirt jump focused custom builders. The company makes Jordie Lunn’s titanium dirt jump specific frames he’s used at Crankworx events.
Cannondale
Connecticut based Cannondale was opened in 1971. Today the company which distributes a range of aluminium and carbon bikes is owned by Canadian company Dorel Industries which is headquartered in Montreal. While the bike company holds onto its American roots, it’s been owned by Dorel since 2008. Cannondale supplies road frames for WorldTour team EF Education First-Drapac. The company also produces a range of mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes and urban bikes. Dorel also owns bike companies GT Bicycles and Pacific Cycle who in turn own Iron Horse Bicycles, Mongoose, Roadmaster and Schwinn Bicycle Company.
Cervélo
Cervélo was founded in 1995 by engineers Gerard Vroomen and Phil White. The company started by making high-end aerodynamic carbon race bikes. Cervélo bikes continue to be used in top level competitions by Team Dimension Data on the WorldTour and professional triathletes while the industry as a whole has followed the emphasis on aerodynamics. The company’s headquarters are in Toronto but it is now owned by Dutch conglomerate Pon Holdings.
