Top 6 Online Blackjack Tips for New Players in Canada
Tip #15 – Never double 4,4. This is only a hit unless you’re facing a 5 or 6, then it’s a split. For some strange reason players that would never double a 3,5 or 2,6 suddenly want to double a 4,4. Don’t do it! In order to learn how to play Blackjack like a pro, you will have to memorize the Blackjack basic strategy. But staring a table and trying to memorize every information isn’t very fun. It is best to spend some time learning it and then test yourself practically. All you need is a deck, or a few decks of cards, and you can play Blackjack by yourself. Check and see how many times, out of 100 you will make the decision as per the Strategy and how many times you’ll get it wrong. After that spend some more time studying the strategy and try again. When you get to 100 out of 100, you’ll know you’re good.

Blackjack tips for playing blackjack like Pro

Blackjack is a popular casino game that you play against the dealer. The game is fun but not as simple as some of the other games you get at casinos, like slots for instance. It requires skill and at least some level of strategy. There are, however, simple as well as advanced tips that you can use to bring down the house edge further and improve your chances of scoring a win.
On this page we discuss some useful tips to help you improve not only your game but also your winning opportunities.

Basic Blackjack Tips
Here are a few basic tips that can help you improve your blackjack play. We start with a couple of basic tips related to general aspects of the game and then move to some more tips on how to play when you get certain specific hands.
- Learn the basics: You must know the basics of the game before you get down to playing it. Go through our entire website to learn about the different aspects of playing blackjack.
- Manage your bankroll: There is something else you need to be careful about apart from knowing the game: managing your bankroll. Ensure that you spread out your wagers carefully. Low bets to start with may be a good idea if you are a beginner; that way you can feel your way through the game and if you lose the first few hands you still have money at hand to carry on.
- Learn to quit: This is important especially if you are at the start or in the middle of a losing streak. Carry on further and you stand the chance to lose more than you probably should have. Quitting also works if you are ahead – you at least get to keep your winnings and not lose it all later on.
- One vital rule to follow: do not play blackjack for real money if you are drinking. It can cloud your decision making abilities and result in you losing more than you normally would have.
Small video showing some of the basic tips:
I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately from casual blackjack players that don’t want to learn how to count cards, but just want some simple tips for increasing their chances of winning at blackjack. I’ve decided to post a list of blackjack tips for average players, but I must give fair warning that these tips will not swing the odds in your favor. That requires learning about card counting. However, these tips will increase your chances of hanging onto your money a little longer and maybe even catching a lucky run.
Please Note: These blackjack tips do not always apply to card counters. If you’re using good card counting strategies, then you should know the appropriate times to go against these tips.
Our 17 Tips:
Beginner Blackjack Tips
Tip #1 – Learn correct basic strategy! Nothing is more important for beginners. (View Basic Strategy Charts for help)
Tip #2 – Never play a game that pays 6:5 on blackjack. Always stick to games that pay the full 3:2. An 8-deck game paying the full 3:2 on blackjack is far better than a single deck blackjack game paying only 6:5.
Tip #3 – Less decks is better than more decks. Just remember, this is only true if the rules are consistent over both games. Therefore if a casino’s double deck game has the exact same rules as their 6-deck game, the double deck game has better player odds.
Tip #4 – Try to find the best table rules you can. Ideally you want the dealer to stand on “Soft 17”. If you’re playing a 6-deck or 8-deck game, play where you can surrender.
Tip #5 – Never use the dangerous Martingale Betting System that requires you to double the size of your bet when you lose. Believe it or not, you can (and will) lose an incredible number of hands in a row at some point. You may survive for a while using the Martingale, but when that losing streak hits, you will lose everything you previously made and a lot more.
Tip #6 – Playing at lower stakes doesn’t necessarily mean you will lose less over time. If you’re playing $20 per hand on a 6:5 paying table, you may be at a large 2% disadvantage causing an expectation of a 40¢ loss per hand. If you’re playing a game like the high limit 6-deck at Aria Casino in Las Vegas, you’re only at a .26% disadvantage. That’s an expected loss of just 26¢ per $100 bet. Notice that the $20 bet will lose more than the $100 bet over time.
Tip #7 – Don’t take insurance! It doesn’t matter how much you bet or what your hand is, insurance is a bad bet! Only 4 out of 13 possible cards will give the dealer a blackjack under the ace. That’s a 30.8% chance of blackjack. If you are only getting paid 2:1 on an insurance bet, that’s a losing bet. If you’re an advanced player using a card counting system, then insurance is a great option in certain situations.
Tip #8 – A dealer showing a 5 or 6 is more likely to make a hand than bust. Don’t go crazy doubling your 7 or less just because the dealer’s showing a 5 or 6. You may get a small card and want to take another hit. Remember, the dealer will make a hand in this situation more times than not.
Tip #9 – Never stand on your “Soft 17”. This hand cannot bust by taking a hit and can only push against a dealer’s 17 if you stand. This is always either a hit or a double.
Tip #10 – The dealer doesn’t control whether you win or lose. Even if you’re frustrated with how things are going, don’t be rude! Believe it or not, the dealers actually want you to win so they can hopefully make some tips and avoid listening to players moan and groan.
Tip #11 – Don’t make bets or playing decisions based on emotions or gut feelings. Know ahead of time what you will be betting and how you will play your hands.
Tip #12 – Make the correct play regardless of your bet size. Just because your biggest bet of the day is on the table doesn’t mean you should suddenly stand on a 14 versus the dealer’s 10 to avoid busting. Play the hand, not the money.
Tip #13 – If you’re playing for comps, sit at a full table. This will slow the game down considerably and allow you to play longer without risking a lot.
Tip #14 – Don’t overuse the surrendering option. Only surrender a 16 versus a dealer’s 9, 10 or Ace, and a 15 versus a dealer’s 10. This is assuming you’re playing a multi-deck game and not counting cards. If you are card counting, then hopefully you know all the correct surrender plays to maximize the potential of this great player option.
Tip #15 – Never double 4,4. This is only a hit unless you’re facing a 5 or 6, then it’s a split. For some strange reason players that would never double a 3,5 or 2,6 suddenly want to double a 4,4. Don’t do it!
* The only exception to this rule is on a single deck game where you cannot double after splitting. Only then would you double 4,4 versus a dealer’s 5 or 6. Keep in mind, most of you will not be playing a game like this.
Tip #16 – Whether the table has been winning or losing doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not it will continue to win or lose.
Tip #17 – Never go all-in. Always leave yourself enough money to double or split your hand. There aren’t many scenarios more painful in blackjack than getting dealt two aces, not having enough money to split, then hitting for two facecards and busting. Ouch!
Hand-Related Blackjack Tips: To Split a Pair or Not
- Never split a hand of two 10s: A hand where both cards have the value of 10 is a great hand to have because the total hand value is 20, the closest to 21. When you have such a hand the dealer has no other option but to hit a 21 to be able to win. The chances of that happening each time are rare.
Should you opt to split it, you still do not know what the second card of the split hand would be, and could potentially end up with 2 hands of lesser value than 20. That is not a chance you should take, given the original hand itself has such great winning potential.
- Do not split a hand of two 5s: A hand of two 5s has a total hand value of 10. The best way to go forward is to double down. Splitting is not a great idea because it just doubles your chance of landing two hands both of which are valued at 10 each. Better have one average hand that you can do something about than two of them that you cannot do much about. This tip applies to a pair of 4s and 10s as well.
- Split a hand of two Aces: Always split a hand of two Aces. That increases your chances of landing a solid, if not winning, hand drastically.
- Split a hand of two 6s: Make it a point to split a hand of two 6s if you see the dealer has a card value ranging from 3 to 6.
- Split a hand of two 7s: Always split a hand of two 7s if the dealer’s hand has a value of between 3 and 7.
- Split a hand of two 8s: Conventional wisdom is to split if you have a hand of two 8s. The total value of that hand is 16 and that is considered the worst blackjack hand. The chances of landing a low value card if you hit are minimal. When you split that hand you double your chances of landing a hand with at least one 10-value card.
- Split a hand of two 9s: You must split a hand of two 9s if the dealer’s hand has a hand value from 2 through to 6, 8, or even 9.
Some More Hand-based Blackjack Tips
Here are a few more tips that can help you maximize your chances by converting even an average hand into a potentially winning one.
- Game play for soft hands: The following tips work should you have a soft hand.
- Hit on a soft 17. A soft 17 is a hand that comprises an Ace and a 6. This hand you should always hit as it gives you a great shot at increasing your hand value.
- Hit if you have a soft hand of lower value than 17 as well. You stand a better chance of increasing the value of your hand; standing keeps you static and the dealer still has the option of hitting or standing to work out a better hand.
- If you have a soft 18 you can hit – the preferred way is to double down – if the dealer’s hand has 8, 9, or 10.
- Game play for hard hands: The following tips work for hard hands with a value over 12.
- If you have a hard hand valued at between 12 and 16 and the dealer has a hand valued at between 2 and 6 the automatic choice is to stand. The chances of the dealer beating you with a higher hand value when his original hand has such low value is not that great, though the possibility always remains.
- If you have a hard hand valued at between 12 and 16 and the dealer’s hand is valued at 7 or higher the wise thing to do is hit. The dealer has a good chance of landing a hand that has a higher value than yours with the subsequent card(s); when you hit you ensure a shot at a higher hand value.
- Stand on a hard 17. If you have a hand value that is a hard 17 – or any higher value – the best option is to stand. 17 or greater is a good hand to have as it is relatively closer to 21.
The Art of Doubling Down in blackjack
Doubling down is another option that you can use very effectively when you play blackjack. However, the trick of mastering the art of doubling down is to know the best hands for which you can use this option. You can opt to double down when:
- Your hand value is a soft 13 or 14 and the dealer has a 5 or 6.
- Your hand value is a soft 15 or 16 and the dealer has a 4, 5, or 6.
- Your hand value is a soft 17 or 18 and the dealer has a value of 3 to 6.
- Your hand value is 9 and the dealer’s card value is between 2 and 8.
- Your hand value is 10 and the dealer’s card value is 9 or lower.
- Your hand value is 11 and the dealer has an Ace or a 10-value card.
Blackjack Tips FAQ
Small Things that You Should Know
There are a lot of simple things that all Blackjack players should be aware of if they want to increase their chances. Here are some intriguing questions.
I am on a Blackjack winning streak, should I increase my wager?
There is no such thing as a winning streak, always remember that. You just happened to win few hands in a row, you applied your strategy right and you had a bit of luck. There is absolutely no statistical or any other sort of a guarantee that you will keep on winning. Even if you manage to win several hands in a row, don’t increase your wager just because you’ve won.
Then, should I increase my wager when I am losing at Blackjack?
That’s not a good idea either. If you’ve lost more than a few hands in a row, there is still no guarantee that you’re going to win the next hand. Moreover, if you increase your wager and still lose, you’ll have to double your next wager and then do the same if the next hand is also a losing one. Soon enough you may end up losing your full bankroll. You should never chase losses and never try to make up what you’ve lost in a hand or two. It’s better to make a break and come back after 10-15 minutes with a clear head.
I’ve noticed that the every player who was sitting at a particular Blackjack table was winning, should I go and sit there too?
That is another Blackjack myth. There is no such thing as a ‘hot’ table, or a ‘hot’ dealer. What you’ve witnessed is just a coincidence. You may sit at that table that you think is hot, but you’ll soon realised that the outcome of your hands has nothing to do with the dealer or the table. All dealers are instructed to do the same things under the same circumstances and the decks of cards which are dealt at each table are consisted of the same cards. Similarly, there is no such thing as a ‘cold’ dealer or table either.
Is Blackjack a good option to end a fun night out?
Of course, it is always fun to play Blackjack and if you manage to win some extra cash, it would be a true crown of a really fun night out. But it is best to avoid the Blackjack table if you had too much to drink. Not only that you might forget the Blackjack basic strategy, but you will also feel bolder and you might start making rash decisions and wager too much money. By the time you sober up you might be fully bankrupt.
What is the best way to learn the Blackjack basic strategy?
In order to learn how to play Blackjack like a pro, you will have to memorize the Blackjack basic strategy. But staring a table and trying to memorize every information isn’t very fun. It is best to spend some time learning it and then test yourself practically. All you need is a deck, or a few decks of cards, and you can play Blackjack by yourself. Check and see how many times, out of 100 you will make the decision as per the Strategy and how many times you’ll get it wrong. After that spend some more time studying the strategy and try again. When you get to 100 out of 100, you’ll know you’re good.
I get very happy when I win at Blackjack and very aggravated when I lose, is that good?
Nobody likes losing and we all love winning, but generally speaking, emotions are not your friend. You should never get too emotional about Blackjack or any other game. When you get too emotional you can’t think clear, you may start doing wrong moves, you may start betting too much and that is definitely not what you’d want. Learn to control your emotions before you start playing Blackjack.
There is a new variant of Blackjack that is offered at a casino nearby, should I give it a try?
There’s no harm in trying your luck on a new game, but you have to make sure that you understand the rules of that variant and how it differs from standard Blackjack and the variants you are familiar with. Start playing for real money only when you are fully aware of everything regarding the new game. Also, always check the house edge, if it is significantly higher than the usual house edge, you may play a hand or two, but there’s no point in playing that variant as your winning chances are decreased.
A 17 is a solid combination at Blackjack, should I stand on a soft 17?
That is one of the common misconceptions. You should never stand on a soft 17 (ace and 6), you should always hit. Statistically, your chances of winning are increased significantly if you hit on a soft 17. The house edge is increased significantly if the dealer hits on 17, which means that it is in his/her favour to do it. If the dealer is prevented by the rules to hit on a soft 17, you are not and you should definitely do it.
Will I lose my focus if I make a break and come back to play Blackjack after a while?
Probably not. In fact, it is a good idea to make a break every now and then, take a short walk, have a meal or a snack, or simply just leave the table for a bit. It is more likely to start making mistakes if you’re at the table for too long, than if you take a break and come back.
Do I have to tip the dealer?
You don’t have to tip the dealer and you shouldn’t feel obliged to. Only do it if you’re winning and it is wise to do it before you leave, at the end of your playing session. It doesn’t make any sense to tip the dealer if you’ve actually lost money. Moreover, the dealer doesn’t have any influence on the outcome of the game, so a tip won’t make him/her act more favorably towards you.

Blackjack Tips - Improve Your Game
For casual players, simple online blackjack tips can help you reduce the house edge and improve your long-term winnings.
Blackjack can be played online in dozens of variations these days, and with a much wider range of stakes than you'll find in a land-based casino in Canada.
While players have more games at their fingertips, it also means you need to be armed with a few basic tips before you play.
Master some basic blackjack tips and you can enjoy a richer online experience:
- Crush multi-hand blackjack or exciting Live Dealer games
- Stick to simple systems to improve your bankroll
- Activate generous welcome bonuses the more you play
Becoming a Smarter Online Blackjack Player
There are many professional blackjack players who have written books about the intricacies of the game, from employing betting systems to card counting.
For the majority of blackjack players, however, all you need is a graps of the different bets and knowing when to commit your dollars.

Practice For Free
Practice makes perfect," is an old saying that can be perfectly applied to online blackjack. The beauty of online gambling is that you can try new games out for free without risking a cent.
There's no embarrassment in sitting at a live table, risking real cash, and learning the hard way; online, you can try out big bets, small bets, or a wild staking system, or try your luck at a crazy variant. Then, when you're ready, get out the credit card and deposit some loonies. Have a go on our free blackjack page, or check out one of the recommended casinos where you can try out games for play money.
Managing Your Bankroll
When you're starting out as a new player, learn to use the casino's 'autoplay' mode to help you (the computer will do all the work for you) or click on the Help section where you can brush up on the rules and table layout.
Once you've learned the rules, you need to manage your bankroll properly. Other than a blackjack, which pays 3/2 if dealt at the start of a hand, a winning hand pays 1/1 (even money). This can help you plan your bets easily. Only risk 5% of your bankroll per hand and never deviate. So, if you have CAD100, find a table that lets you bet CAD5 per hand.
Similarly, if you only have 10 bucks, find a table where you can bet 50c a time. You won't have trouble online; every good casino offers games that are perfect for casual players.
Knowing When to Hit

Your decision is always based on your cards but also on the dealer's up-card (the one card the dealer shows at the start).
So, if you have a total of 4 or 8, and the dealer has a low card, always hit. A dealer will have to hit twice in most cases here and has a risk of busting. You don't need to take that risk, so aim for a 14 or 18 (as in this case), then stand.
Conversely, if you have a relatively high hand, say 13-16, and the dealer is showing a picture card, keep hitting. You don't want to stand, then lose to a blackjack or 20 when the dealer pulls an ace or king out of the deck. Hit and aim for 21; it's worth the risk.
Check the rules before you begin: some tables require a dealer to always hit on a soft 16, that is, a hand with an Ace in that totals 16. Other tables are different and that can drastically change the dynamics of the game.
Doubling Down
If you're dealt 10 or 11, always double down. It will be expected of you in a live casino environment, when other players are allowed to bet on your hand too, so don't disappoint.
Doubling down involves making a second bet on your hand to receive one more card, and one card only. It's a good move to get to 20 or 21, especially if the dealer is showing a low card from 2-6, which puts him in danger of hitting to a bust.
Win More at Canadian Online Blackjack Sites
Blackjack on the web is fun, fast and profitable. Master the basics and then move on to exciting variants like Multi-Hand Blackjack or Surrender that you can only find on the web.
Plus, blackjack can often contribute towards generous welcome bonuses when you sign up. Make a CAD deposit, play as much blackjack as you can, then watch as the free casino cash comes rolling in.
Five Fast Tips for Improving your Blackjack
1 - Print Out a Cheat Sheet
A good first tip for all online blackjack players is to memorise the basic strategy chart for hitting, standing, doubling, and splitting. You'll find one easily on the Internet. Print off a cheat sheet and keep it handy by the keyboard the next time you play.
Cheat sheets are great for helping you make the right decision depending on both your cards, the up-card of the dealer, and the number of decks being used in the game.
2 - Never Take Insurance Bets
“ Insurance bets are offered by most online blackjack games, but don't be tempted. You're better off trying for the 3/2 paid on your own blackjack.
Insurance bets are offered by most online blackjack games, but don't be tempted. You're better off trying for the 3/2 paid on your own blackjack rather than the even-money (1/1) odds on the dealer having a blackjack.
Plus, hunt out games where the dealer stands on 17. When a dealer hits a soft 17 it gives the house an increased edge.
3 - Vary Your Betting Stakes
Variation is an important part of any blackjack game so many pros advise to vary betting amounts according to your results. So, if you are winning increase the amount you are betting, and decrease it if losing. Adjusting stakes will lead to a healthier bankroll over the long term.
4 - Avoid Card Counting
Don't bother with card counting or other tracking systems, particularly online. It's very hard to master, and in any case land-based casinos are very adept at spotting card counters, and even very good ones can be ejected and banned for life. Plus, your face will be sent round every other casino and you'll be barred from those too.
5 - Always Split Aces and Eights
OK, so splitting cards means a second bet, and if you're on a tight bankroll that can soon eat into your chips. But splitting gives you two chances to beat the dealer and you need every chance you can get. Seize the initiative and watch your profits grow.

Basic Strategy in Blackjack
Basic Blackjack strategy is beyond a set of rules. From fundamental gameplay to advanced gaming, it can be said that it is 99% dependent on how you make your choices on the possible card combinations. As known from the Blackjack rules stated in the other section, results are calculated based on card values. Here is a small reminder!
Aces are treated as 1, with an exception of 7, 8 and 9, (when they equal to 11). A, 5 amounts to 6, whereas A, 9 equals 20. Note that if you are talking about Points Total in this case then it is a simple mathematical calculation, irrespective of the card value. Take for instance- be it 8, 5; 6, 3, 3; or, A, 3, 9. The points total in all of these cases stands at 13.
Here is a step by step description of the basic strategy as it is commonly practiced by casino players.
If the points total stands below 11 (anywhere between 3 and 11) then you choose to hit. If this total stands in between 12 and 16, you choose to stand except for in the case of dealer value higher than 6. Opting to hit is the wisest alternative in this regard. Points’ total standing between 17 and 20 leads to stand, with the exception of dealer above 8 (here you select to hit).
For a slightly intermediate technique, Split action is being included. You choose to split if you receive pairs as card values with the exception of 4s, 5s, and 10s. If you get pairs of 4s then select Hit. In case of pair of 5s, choose to hit if dealer gets 10 or an Ace, otherwise in all the other cases, you are recommended to opt for a double down. Landing pair of 10s hints at Stand.
Players, who have mastered this game over years, understand that Blackjack becomes slightly more technical with the introduction of Double Down option. The Double Down is executed in three situations-
- Firstly, if points total is 9 and dealer scores less than 7
- Secondly, if dealer scores less than 10 and points total is also 10
- Lastly, if points total is 11 even then opting for Double Down is the wisest action to boost your chances of winnings.
Blackjack is a game of numbers and luck. An interesting fact to note is that if it is played with one deck then the dealer stands on Soft 17. A player can opt for doubles only in case of first two cards and not afterwards (as it is often assumed). RTP, i.e. Average Return to a Player is 100% in case of splitting as otherwise stated in the game.
The Regular Betting Systems have been discussed in detail in another section. However, there are a few betting systems or rather strategies that can be helpful in betting wisely on your favorite game.
These systems have been discussed in brief here…
Paroli system comes first, where you are supposed to raise your bet whenever you win. On the other hand in a Parlay system, if you win then your new bet is sum total of old bet plus profit incurred on it. The Martingale system is implemented when you lose a certain bet. In this scenario, your bet amount will be doubled. In 1- 3- 2- 6 system, the bet amount in following round is decided by sequence of numbers as stated in this system. Lastly, Labouchere System states that the bet amount of player in a specific round will be sum total of two numbers on the outside in suggested sequence.
Bad Strategy in Blackjack
If you lose money at any point during the course of the game then it can be termed as bad strategy of player. According to experts, there are three bad strategies in particular that are often noticed. These include
- Not Keeping a Check on Dealer: Decision making is an important aspect of online gambling. You are supposed to be very careful with your choice of actions during the game. However, it is very important to keep a check on the steps of dealer. This is because a good player is someone who is able to successfully gauge the game of dealer in order to determine his/ her own course of actions.
- Going Bust: It is also very crucial to keep it straight in your head that you know where to stop, without going bust. Remember that you are playing to earn and not to lose. So, draw a line in the very beginning.
- Not Following Regular Bonuses: Trusted casinos come up with bonus offers on a regular basis. As a responsible player, you are suggested to keep a check on the ongoing bonus offers so as to enhance your winnings.
Top 10 Blackjack Tips
Blackjack is an extremely popular casino game, and one that offers lots of strategies and tips to help the player overcome the house edge; as much as possible anyway. Below, we've documented the Top 10 Blackjack Tips to help you improve your game.
Blackjack Tips #1: When To Hit
Use the following rules to determine when to Hit, according to your hand and the dealer's face up card.
-If the dealer's face up card is 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace, and your hand totals 8 or 12 through 16, Hit.
-If the dealer's face up card is Ace, and your hand totals 11, do not Double, Hit.
-If the dealer's face up card is 10, and your hand totals 10, do not Double, Hit.
-If the dealer's face up card is 7, 8 or 9, and your hand totals 9, do not Double, Hit.
Use the following rules to determine when to Stand, according to your hand and the dealer's face up card.
-When your hand totals 17 or above, no matter what, Stand. (Some strategies will tell you to hit 17 if the dealer has an Ace.)
-If the dealer's face up card is 6 or below, and your hand totals 13 or above, Stand.
-If you have a splitable pair of 10s or Face Cards, do not Split them, Stand.
Blackjack Tips #3: When To Split
Use the following rules to determine when to Split your hand, according to value of your pair and the dealer's face up card.
-Only Split 2s and 3s if the dealer's card is 4-7
-Never Split 5s; either Double Down, or Hit if the dealer is showing a 10 or Ace.
-Split 6s and 7s if the dealers card is 6 or below.
-Always split 8s, no matter what.
-Always Split Aces if allowed.
Blackjack Tips #4: When To Double
Doubling is a strategy often used when the player's hand equal 9, 10 or 11, giving the player a good chance of hitting 19-20 with a 10 or Face card. Use the following rules to determine when to Double your hand, according to your total and the dealer's face up card.
-Always double a total of 10 unless the dealer has 10 or Ace.
-Always double an 11 unless the dealer has an Ace.
-9 should only be doubled when the dealer has 3, 4, 5 or 6 showing.
Blackjack Tips #5: When in Doubt, Use a Strategy Chart
Blackjack Strategy Charts are designed to tell a player exactly how to act in every possible situation. Some players do not like blackjack Strategy Charts because they remove the element of decision making, but consider this. Casinos get the upper hand because the dealer cannot make decisions. The dealer must follow strict rules based on probabilities when playing their hand. If the player uses the same strategy, he is effectively decreasing the house edge to a minimum.
Blackjack Tips #6: Game Selection, Know The Rules
There are many more variations of Blackjack than the classic version we all know and love. Each has a slight difference in the rules, and some even have optional side bets and progressive jackpots. When choosing to play a new variation of blackjack, such as Perfect Pairs, Super 21 or Progressive Blackjack, be sure to know all of the rules and payouts involved.
Blackjack Tips #7: Card Counting
Blackjack Card Counting is an age-old strategy used by many professional blackjack players. It is not that hard to learn, and can be very effective in minimizing losses and maximizing profits. It is recommended to get a good deal of practice in card counting before applying the strategy at a live casino so that the extensive security staff does not discover you are doing it. Card counting is not illegal by any means, but it may get you promptly, if not permanently, removed from the casino if caught. Note that card counting is not a viable online casino blackjack strategy. Online casino software re-shuffles the deck with each new hand.
Blackjack Tips #8: Play Online, It's Cheaper
Aside from the omission of card counting, playing online blackjack has many benefits. For one, you can put all of the money you intended to spend towards your bankroll. You won't have to gas up the car, purchase airline tickets or book a hotel (if no local casino). When you win, you won't have the obligatory "tipping the dealer" to reduce your profits. All in all, it just makes sense to stay home, eat your own food, drink your own drinks and spend a lot less money by playing blackjack online.
Blackjack Tips #9: Play Online for Bonuses
Playing online isn't just about convenience. You can actually double or triple your bankroll when you sign up at an online casino. They all offer welcome bonuses, most matching your first deposit 100% to 200% or more, up to a certain amount. Instead of starting with $100 bankroll, made up of your own hard earned cash, why not play online and claim a welcome bonus that could give you're a lot more bankroll for your buck by way of free casino chips?
Blackjack Tips #10: Bet Sizes That Match Your Bankroll
Lastly, we'll go ahead state the obvious. Don't play a blackjack table where the limits do not correspond with your bankroll. If you have $200, don't sit at a blackjack table with a minimum $100 bet. No matter how many blackjack tips and strategies you apply, you'll want to have plenty of opportunities to play hands, with splitting and doubling available, in order to make a sizeable profit. Make sure you will be able to place a minimum of 40 bets with your bankroll before choosing a table.
17 Blackjack Tips for Beginners

Casino blackjack is an easy game to learn, but if you want to have the best chance to win you need to play the game a certain way.
These 17 blackjack tips for beginners are designed to take you from a complete beginner to a seasoned pro at the 21 tables.
Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be able to find the best games and know exactly what to do on every hand. By playing every hand the correct way you keep the house edge as low as possible.
This gives you the best chance to win any playing session and reduces your losses when luck isn’t going your way.
Even if you’ve played blackjack before, these tips can be your refresher guide before your next trip to the casino.
You never know when one thing you learn can save you a ton of money, so the few minutes you invest reading this page may be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars to you over the many years of blackjack play ahead of you.
1 – Does Blackjack Pay 3 to 2 or 6 to 5?
Most blackjack games pay 3 to 2 on a blackjack. But more and more are being offered where you only get 6 to 5 on a blackjack.
This first tip is simple.
Never play blackjack where you get less than 3 to 2 for a blackjack.
It doesn’t matter how good the other rules are, the house has such a large edge when they only pay 6 to 5 or worse that you can’t overcome it.
You can find a few games loosely based on blackjack that might have different payouts for a blackjack that offer a low house edge, but they’re few and far between. The safest thing to do is not play any game that looks like blackjack that pays less than 3 to 2.
One of the tricks casinos use is offering a single deck blackjack game that only pays 6 to 5 for a blackjack. Players learn that a single deck game offers the best chance to beat the casino so the casino uses this against them.
They also often open low minimum bet tables with these rules to take advantage of the low rollers. The casino might have a minimum bet of $25 on their tables that pay 3 to 2 for blackjack but accept bets as low as $5 on a table that pays 6 to 5.
Even a single deck game with perfect rules that pay 6 to 5 is worse than almost any regular game paying 3 to 2.
One of the things that makes blackjack such a great game to play is that it has a low house edge. This means that you have a better chance to win than when you play most other casino games. One of the reasons the edge is so low is because you get a bonus payout on your blackjacks.
Instead of getting $10 back on a $10 bet you get $15. This extra $5 is a big part of the low house edge. Without it, you’ll find blackjack much more difficult to beat.
2 – Soft Hands
I realize that the two sentences above make it sound like the same thing, but the difference is if you have three or more cards sometimes you won’t be able to use the ace as an 11 without going over 21.
The reason soft hands are important is that sometimes it’s more advantageous to hit with a soft hand than stand.
In order to play blackjack with the best possible chance to win you need to take advantage of every situation where you can improve your odds.
In a section later on this page I discuss using a basic strategy card. These cards have a special section for soft hands that help you make the best play every time.
3 – Does the Dealer Hit or Stand on Soft 17?
When you pick a blackjack table the standard rules are usually listed on the table or on a card at the table. One of the common rules listed on the felt is whether or not the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17.
Your odds are slightly better when the dealer stands on a soft 17.
If all of the other table rules are the same you should play at the one where the dealer stands on a soft 17.
This rule alone doesn’t change your odds enough to not play, but when combined with other rules that change the odds it can add up. Other rules that change the odds are which hands and how often you can split and which hands you can double down on.
4 – Doubling Down
When you double down you make a second bet equal to your original card and receive one additional card. This is your final card and ends your hand.
Just like being paid extra for a natural blackjack, being able to double your bet in advantageous situations helps keep the house edge as low as possible.
When you have a hard total of 11 you should double down against any dealer up card except an ace.
With a hard total of 10, you should double down against any dealer up card except an ace or 10 value card.
If you have a hard total of nine you should double down against a dealer three, four, five, and six.
With a soft 13 or 14 total, you should double down against a dealer five or six.
If you have a soft total of 15 or 16 you should double down against a dealer four, five, or six.
When you have a soft 17 or 18 you should double down against a dealer three, four, five, or six.
These plays are the most profitable and should always be made if the rules allow. When you start using a strategy card, which I discuss below, it will show these plays so you don’t have to memorize them before you start playing.
5 – Splitting
Another favorable rule that helps improve your chances of winning is being able to split hands when you receive a pair. Some blackjack games even let you split and then double down after splitting if you want, which is even better for you.
When you receive a pair and want to split you place another bet equal to your first one and split the two cards apart face up on the table.
The first rule of splitting is that you always split a pair of eights and a pair of aces. If you split and get another pair you need to split as many times as the casino allows.
The second rule is to never split a pair of 10 valued cards. You always stand on a total of 20.
Many other hands should be split, as you’ll see on your strategy card.
6 – Basic Strategy Card
As a beginning blackjack player, the most important thing you can do is get a basic strategy card and use it while playing. You should use it to make every single decision until you learn all of the correct plays.
A basic strategy card has been designed using a mathematical program that has determined the best play for every situation. This can be done because a program can be designed to consider every possible outcome for each individual situation that ever comes up at the blackjack table.
The program can run the hands millions of times to find out which play wins the most or loses the least.
Some hands that you play lose no matter what you do, but if you play them a certain way they lose less than any other way. This is important because you need to conserve as many chips as possible to be able to double down and split when it’s profitable.
Other hands are always profitable in the long run but are more profitable if you play them a certain way.
You can buy a basic strategy card in most casino gift shops, but you can print this one for free.
Here’s how to use the strategy chart:
Find your hand down the left-hand side of the chart or card. The card has three sections: hard, soft, and split.
Next, find the dealer’s up card along the top of the card.
Now find where your hand and the dealer’s card intersect on the card to see the correct play.
Here are a few examples using the strategy card at the link above:
If you have a pair of sixes and the dealer has a five you should split. You look down the left-hand side to the split section, find your hand of 6 – 6, and then find the dealer card 5. The spot where the two intersect has a P, which if you look at the key below the chart, means split.
If you have a soft 17, consisting of an ace and a six, and the dealer has a three, you should double down. You find your hand, A – 7, in the soft section, and the dealer’s 3 on the top. The intersection has a D, which stands for double down.
If you have a hard 17 and the dealer has an ace you stand. When you find your hard 17 in the hard section you see that you stand against every dealer card.
It’s easy to quickly see the best play using a strategy card and you’ll start remembering the best plays as you gain experience.
But remember that you should never play a hand a different way than listed on the strategy card, because each time you do it costs you money.
7 – Strict Budget
When you use the tips on this page you have a chance to win whenever you play blackjack, but in the long run you’re going to lose more money than you win. The casino has an advantage and over time it adds up so the casino makes money.
This means it’s important that you have a strict budget for your blackjack play and that you stick to it at all times.
You may be familiar with the term bankroll, and your bankroll can include your budget, but they’re two different things.
Your bankroll is the total amount you have set aside to play blackjack. But your budget is the amount you’re willing to lose during a single playing session.
You should decide exactly how much you’re willing to lose before you stop playing. It doesn’t matter how much it is; just set a limit.
It’s also helpful to set a win limit, but it’s not required.
You’re going to the casino today to play blackjack. Your casino offers a $10 minimum bet table with decent rules so you decide that the most you’re willing to lose for the trip is $300 and if you get up by $100 at any time you’re going to quit and take the $100 as profit.
You’ll probably end up playing for as long as you want without hitting ether limit, but by having the set limits you have total control over your finances.
Occasionally you’ll hit your $100 win limit so when you do you can put your $300 back to play the next time. You can either add the $100 win to your bankroll or use it for something else.
Most recreational blackjack players take money from their job or somewhere else to play with. This is fine if this is how you decide to do it, but I recommend setting aside a set amount each week or month for your blackjack bankroll. Even if it’s only $50 or $100 you’ll be able to build your bankroll so you can keep playing.
Remember that your bankroll will go down over time because of the house edge, so you need to keep adding to it or you’ll run out of money and won’t be able to play.
8 – Player’s Club
Most casinos have a player’s club that offers rewards or comps based on your play. This is a way to get free things just for playing.
Sign up for the player’s club before you start playing. If you don’t know where the club sign up area is located ask one of the casino employees about it.
You’ll receive a card that you present every time you play. The casino tracks your play and you earn points you can use towards things like free play, free meals, or other things. If they don’t use a points system you still earn free stuff. Ask how the system works when you sign up.
You also will start receiving special offers just for being a member of the club at most casinos.
If you play blackjack online many of the casinos also have a rewards system or player’s club. Take a look at the casino site where you plan to play to find out more. If you don’t see any information about it, contact the support department.
In the event they don’t offer a program you might consider playing at an online casino that does offer one.
The player’s club is a great way to get some of the money back that you lose playing. The usually don’t give cash back, but if you get something paid for that would’ve otherwise cost money out of your pocket it’s the same as getting money for free.
If you’re going to be playing any way you might as well get as many benefits as possible.
9 – Avoid Side Bets
Some blackjack games have side bets available.
Here are a few you might see:
- Royal Match
- Blackjack Match
- Over / Under 13
- Super Sevens
- 21 + 3
- Lucky Ladies
- Bonus Blackjack
- Crazy Sevens
- Progressive Blackjack
- Perfect Pairs
The common theme of side bets is they almost always offer a higher house edge than the simple blackjack game. For this reason you should simply avoid playing any side bet offered while you’re playing blackjack.
Here’s something about side bets that beginning players may find odd. Many times the other players at the table will be playing the side bets and try to get you to play them as well. It doesn’t make sense because whether or not you play the side bet doesn’t change anything for them, but don’t be surprised when it happens to you.
It’s a waste of time to try to explain why you don’t play side bets, but you can play any way you like. So don’t let peer pressure make you play a bet that costs you more money.
10 – Don’t Play Drunk
Gambling and overindulging in alcohol never mix because when you get drunk you don’t make good decisions.
Why do you think casinos give gamblers free drinks?
They give free drinks because they know that the more you drink the more you’ll gamble. This leads to enough extra profit to pay for the drinks and still have money left over.
Blackjack is a tough game to beat if you’re thinking clearly, but it becomes even harder when you start making mistakes.
If you enjoy a few drinks while gambling it’s fine. Just don’t overdo it. If you start drinking too much stop playing.
If you simply refuse to stop drinking and playing blackjack at the same time make sure you have a set limit for losses and stick to it no matter what. You can only take the cash that you can stand losing to the table and don’t bring any more.
Or you can set a time limit for playing and travel over to the bar to drink when you’re finished.
It doesn’t matter how you do it, just don’t play blackjack when you’re drunk. It rarely ends in a good way for your bankroll.
11 – Ignore All Advice from Dealers and Other Players
I touched on this in the section about side bets, but don’t listen to advice from the dealer or other players. If you use the tips on this page you’re already playing the best way.
Any advice you receive contrary to what you’ve learned will cost you more money in the long run.
Some players and dealers honestly think that they’re helping you, but any play that’s different than what’s included on your basic strategy card is wrong.
A common complaint by uninformed players at the blackjack table is when you act right before the dealer and take a card that would bust the dealer. Sometimes a player will even tell you how you screwed up the hand for everyone at the table.
To be polite, the player who thinks you took the dealer’s bust card doesn’t understand how probability works. To be less than polite, but honest, the player is an idiot.
The odds of the dealer drawing a bust card are the same no matter what you so. Even if the player who doesn’t know what they’re talking about was somewhat right, the truth is that you take the card that leads to the dealer busting just as often as you take the bust card.
But the truth is that it doesn’t matter what you do. So you need to always follow your strategy card and ignore the other players and dealer.
If another player is being rude and bothering you your options are playing at a different table, asking the floor person or pit boss to deal with them, or ignore them.
The only case where you should consider listening to advice is when the dealer tells you something that may be a mistake. If you place a bet incorrectly or do something against the house rules the dealer ma inform you so you don’t make a mistake again.
In rare cases, you may find a dealer who tries to get you to take insurance but doesn’t do it all of the time. This is tricky and if the casino finds out that the dealer is doing it they’ll put a stop to it.
If a dealer likes you, when they check for a blackjack when they have an ace up they may quickly pass you when they ask for insurance when they don’t have a blackjack and pause longer when they ask you if you want insurance when they do have a blackjack.
This is rare, but if you find this happening with a certain dealer you can take insurance when they pause to see if this is happening. If it does happen you need to tip the dealer extra, but not make it look like you’re doing anything different than normal.
I cover why insurance is a bad bet in another section, but this is the only situation you should ever consider taking it. And as I already mentioned, this is a rare situation because the dealer is taking a chance of losing their job if they try to help you in this way.
So unless you’re sure something is going on you should not take insurance.
12 – Watch for Dealer Mistakes on Pay Outs
Most payouts at the blackjack table are one to one. This means that if you bet $20 and win you get $20 plus your original wager back.
When you split cards and double down you increase the amount of money on the table so you need to always make sure the dealer pays you the right amount.
You also need to keep a close eye on what you receive when you hit a blackjack. Because you get 3 to 2 on natural blackjacks you should know exactly how much you get back when you hit one.
Remember you always get back your original bet plus the 3 to 2 payout.
Here’s the amount you should get back for many common bets.
5 Useful Online Blackjack Tips and Tricks – 2021 Beginner Guide

People try to make their life more entertaining with different activities. Some of us would travel around the world and make some memorable moments. Others would rather choose to listen to music or watch movies at home. Indoor activities can also be a good way to have fun. Finally, some people like to add a dose of adrenaline into their life. Because of that, they would rather choose to stay at home and gamble online.
The online gambling industry is attracting more and more people daily. The Coronavirus crisis locked us down at home and we are looking for ways to have more fun. Unfortunately, many people lost their jobs because the crisis affected the economies of most countries. Because of that, people are also trying to make money while having fun. The Internet world also brought us the opportunity to test our luck and check our gambling skills.
Logically, this way of making money is good if you know what you are doing. The range of options is wide and every person can pick between a huge number of gambling games. One of those games that deserve your attention is Blackjack. However, beginners won’t have a chance to earn money because of their lack of gambling experience. You need to use different methods of knowledge improvement to become a pro. Fortunately, you came to the right place.
1. A Few Words about Blackjack
We assume that you opened this article because you are a beginner in this world. Because of that, we should analyze the rules of this game a bit more. The main goal of playing blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. Certain cards have different values. For instance, aces can worth 1 or 11 and face cards worth 10.
When you start playing, you will have 2 cards in front of you. The dealer’s card is hidden until the very end. You have two options to choose between – Hit and Stand. When you “Hit”, you actually ask the dealer to show you another card. However, when you pick to “Stand”, you choose to end your turn and hold the total.
The list of the rules is longer and we highlighted only the most important ones. We recommend you research the Internet and see how the entire game functions.
After you do that, it is necessary to hear some useful online blackjack tips and tricks. Indeed, you can start playing without knowing these pieces of information. Yet, it is hard to believe that you will have the chance to earn a bigger amount of money. Because of that, let’s find out those tricks together!
2. Don’t Think Like a Gambler
At first glance, this piece of advice might seem confusing. Indeed, blackjack truly is one of the most popular online gambling games. Yet, the way how you approach the game needs to be different from others.
Beginners usually talk with other gamblers about different gambling games. Logically, they want to learn more from them and they ask them different questions. Yet, the directions that poker or slot player will give you are not going to be effective. Each game requires different methods and this especially counts when we talk about blackjack.
You need to understand that blackjack is a game that is based on statistics. You truly need to understand how the entire system functions. A lot of mathematics and counting is involved in this game. For other gambling games, a lot of luck is involved.
3. Always Hit In Some Cases
This might seem like a risky thing. Beginners do not want to lose their money and they are avoiding taking risks. However, it is not the point to risk without any reason. More precisely, there are certain moments when you should always hit.
For instance, let’s say that you have been dealt a card total of 8 or less. Professional blackjack players are usually happy when they get that sort of card total. In that case, you should always take another card. It would even be recommendable that you double your bet if your budget allows you that.
However, let’s make something clear. If your card total is somewhere between 9 od 16, we recommend you stand. Some experienced players might allow themselves to go hit. But, you still do not have the necessary skills to do something like that. The smartest decision would be to stand in those cases. Logically, if the card total is between 17 and 21, you need to stand always.
4. Chose the Right Game Variant
The proof of the popularity of this game is the number of different variants available online. It might seem to beginners that they all bring similar chances of making money. Yet, this sort of decision is crucial for your profit.
You should know that blackjack mostly has a very low house edge. However, by choosing the right variant, you can find the one with the smallest house edge. Something you should chase is the RTP of the game. If the RTP is high, this raises the chances of getting a reward.
We are not here to make some direct suggestions. However, variants like Pontoon, Blackjack Surrender, and Blackjack Switch might be a good choice.
The full story does not end here. Rookies should know that different game variants have different rules. You need to ensure that you understand all the rules. By understanding them, you will know which blackjack strategy would be the best one.
5. Pick the Right Casino
Indeed, the most important thing for players is to pick the right way to play this game. Yet, it is almost equally important to pick the right casino. As you know, the online world is full of scams. Some casinos are not quite honest and they only tend to take the money of their clients. The most professional ones would want to ensure the best possible experience for their gamblers.
If you are a beginner, there are certain live casinos for beginners. This is the place where you should start.
