The Greatest Craps Roll Ever in Canada

She brought her craps A-game out at none other than the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, so duly hit the headlines for her feat. It’s said that as she drew the crowds, she also drew the watchful eye of casino staff, but once her hot streak ended she was celebrated with Champagne.

The Amazing Story Of The Grandma And The Longest Craps Roll In History

Ever wondered who holds the record for the longest craps roll ever? It might not be who you’d expect.

One of our favorite ever stories is that of Patricia Demauro, a grandmother from Denville, New Jersey, who smashed the record for the longest ‘Golden Arm’ – that is, when craps players roll the dice for over an hour without losing.

Never heard of Patricia? You’re in for a treat. Luck be a lady…

The Longest Craps Roll In History

Patricia Demauro is everyone’s favorite grandma gambler.

Back in May 2009, the craps conqueror reportedly rolled 154 times – including 25 passes – in four hours and 18 minutes. A world record!

She brought her craps A-game out at none other than the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, so duly hit the headlines for her feat.

By doing this, the unlikely hero beat the record set by Stanley Fujitake in 1989. He had rolled 118 times for three hours and six minutes.

So not only did Demauro take down the original trailblazer, but she also ended a 20-year record.

Demauro’s record for the longest craps roll ever also made sure she cemented her place in the iconic dice game’s hall of fame.

Or specifically, she joined the ‘Platinum Arm Club’, which honors players who roll for 90 minutes, or 60 minutes plus on two or more occasions, without ‘sevening out’.

How She Smashed The Record

Demauro represented gambling grandmothers everywhere, when she allegedly rolled up at the Borgata with a buddy and just $100 in her pocket.

It took the – reportedly – casual gambler just over four hours to make the dice game look like a round of dominos, breaking the world record for consecutive rolls in craps.

Yep, 154 rolls without losing took her clear of Fujitake and into a league of her own.

It’s said that as she drew the crowds, she also drew the watchful eye of casino staff, but once her hot streak ended she was celebrated with Champagne.

Now etched into casino folklore, it’s though Demauro’s odds of achieving this feat (since we’re talking gambling) were one in 1.56 trillion. Not bad, eh?

Some would say it was beginner’s luck, others natural skill.

We’d say she had her fair share of both! And hopefully, a whole load of fun, too.

How Much Did Patricia Demauro Win?

The exact amount that Demauro won at the craps table is unknown.

Neither the casino or the record breaker have, as far as we know, chosen to disclose the numbers.

In fact, Demauro declined to reveal how many dollars she walked away with. But it seems likely that her winnings were at least in the thousands, potentially up to the millions.

Some estimates claim her crown was worth $180,000 in the end. But as we’re not privy to the amounts she wagered, it’s tough to say.

At the very least, her hot streak could have meant a good day at the table for her fellow players and dealers.

And all the more impressive being that Demauro claimed it was just her second time playing the game.

Where Is She Now?

After all the applause, the crowds and the Champagne toast to Demauro’s success, what happened?

Some sources say she used her winnings to take her grandkids to Disney World, while also treating her friend – who apparently advised her – to a celebratory dinner.

It seems as though, despite returning to her lucky table to watch just a few days later, Demauro didn’t roll the dice again.

It’s now been over 10 years since the senior star of Atlantic City caused such a stir. And, as far as we know, nobody else has yet been able to beat her record.

What’s the Best Roll in Craps?

Craps looks like an intimidating casino game if you have never played it before. Yet, you will mostly hear or read gambling experts say you should play the game because of its really low house edge. In fact, if you make the right bets, you’ll only face a house edge of 1.36%.

However, these bets aren’t likely to win you lots of money. Remember that anything with a low house edge offers a low payout too. So, what’s the best roll in craps?

You may not like this answer, but we still think the best roll in craps are those that provide you with the best odds of winning, even if they don’t pay out much. Below we explore this idea by first looking at the craps bets with the lowest house edges and then looking at why sticking at these bets is a good idea.

Craps Bets with a Low House Edge

There are five bets with a shallow house edge in craps. These are:

Pass and Don’t Pass

Pass and Don’t Pass are the most straightforward bets in craps. You make this bet before the shooter rolls the dice. Both of these bets pay 1:1.

A Pass Line bet wins if the come out roll is 7 or 11. However, you lose the bet if the come out roll is 2, 3, or 12. If a point number is established, pass line bets win if the point number is rolled again. It loses if the number 7 is rolled before that. The house edge on a Pass bet is 1.41%.

Don’t Pass is the opposite of a pass bet. It wins if a shooter rolls a 2 or 3 on the come out roll but loses on a 7 or 11. If a point number is established, it wins on a 7 and loses if the point number is rolled first on the second roll. The house edge on a Don’t Pass bet is 1.36%.

Come and Don’t Come

Come and Don’t Come bets mirror Pass and Don’t Pass bets, but they are placed after the point has been established. These bets also pay 1:1.

The Come bet wins if a 7 or 11 is rolled after the point, but loses if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled. A Don’t Come bet wins on 2 or 3, but loses on a 7 or 11. You also face a house edge of around 1.41% on these two bets.

Odds Bets

An odds bet is a side wager that you can place after the point is established and placed a Pass bet. The bet wins if the point number is rolled before a 7. Essentially, this bet has a house edge of 0% on any number you bet on. However, the payout for an odds bet varies according to the point number as follows:

Point NumberPayout
4 and 102:1
5 and 83:2
6 and 86:5

With 0% house edge and some favorable payouts, this is a side bet we recommend you take a chance on every once and a while.

Laying the Odds

The laying the odds bet is the opposite of an Odds bet. You can place this bet after placing a Don’t Pass bet. A Laying the Odds bet wins if 7 is rolled before the point number. There is also a 0% house edge on this bet at the moment. Payouts vary based on the point number as follows:

Point NumberPayout
4 and 101:2
5 and 82:3
6 and 85:6

Why are these the Best Rolls in Craps?

These are the best rolls/bets in craps because you keep the house edge as low as possible. So, you are more likely to win. Most of the players who have won big while playing craps usually do so by sticking to these bets.

craps rolls best

In fact, the largest amount of money won on a single bet on a table game has long been a Don’t Pass bet made by William Lee Bergstrom, which netted him $777,000. Obviously, he made a big bet to get that sum, but he took the easiest odds to beat to double his money.

There are many stories of gamblers profiting big on craps, some after really long gaming sessions. Often, they do this by sticking to bets that are easy to beat and using effective betting systems.

You can take your chances on a single roll bet that pays out 33:1, but chances are you won’t win it because of the high house advantage. If you keep repeating this bet with the idea that you need to win sometime, you’re likely in for a short gaming session.

So, take our advice; stick to craps bets with a low house edge, and you’ll find yourself a winner more often than not.

7 Legendary Craps Rolls and High Rollers

Craps - Casino Game

Slot machines might bring the tourists out in droves, and poker games still get their TV time, but the beating heart of every casino floor is the craps table.

When you’re walking through a casino and hear the unmistakable roar of a dozen strangers celebrating together, you know you’ve found the craps game.

The age-old art of risking money on the roll of dice comes in many forms, but craps is a true classic, gambling distilled to its very essence.

With a seemingly endless selection of wagers to choose from — ranging from the safe and snug Pass Line play to the exotic longshots like the Hard 8, Big 6, and the Yo — the craps table offers a little something for gamblers of all stripes.

And as a game of pure chance, reliant on the random roll of two six-sided die, players can’t tilt the odds in their favor by applying their own skills.

Throughout the annals of gambling lore, a handful of outliers have managed to beat the odds by crushing a craps game in legendary rolls.

Unlike the rest of us, who might count a 10-roll string as an unusually successful run, these craps heroes take the dice and roll a hundred times or more before “sevening” out.

Whether these unexpectedly long rolls are due to pure chance or physical dexterity is still an open question. Nonetheless, nobody can deny that ridiculously long rolls can and do happen when the stars align.

Below, you’ll find seven stories involving craps players who put on a show for the ages, rolling and rolling until every eye in the house was fixed squarely on them.

Some managed to win millions in a single session, while others set world records, but they all have one thing in common — the golden touch it takes to turn two dice into a moneymaking machine.

1 – Patricia Demauro Breaks the World Record for Longest Consecutive Roll

Fittingly enough for a game revolving around random chance, the Guinness Book of World Records recognizes a rank amateur as the longest craps roll of all-time.

Back in May of 2009, a recreational gambler by the name of Patricia Demauro departed Denville, New Jersey, for a nightcap in Atlantic City. Joined by her friend John Capra at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the housewife sidled up to a penny slot and started spinning away.

At around 8:00 that evening, Demauro grew bored with the mindless slot gameplay, so she headed over to Capra’s three-card poker table to see what was happening there. Capra was suffering through a losing session, so he offered to teach his pal a thing or two about craps at a nearby table.

Demauro had never played craps before in her life, but after watching Capra take the dice and complete a short roll, she figured things out quickly enough. As she later explained in an interview with Time magazine, Demauro knew she was over her head when it came to the exotic bets, so she stuck with a basic Pass Line + Odds strategy.

“There are all these terms I didn’t know.

People were yelling out ’Yo.’

I said to John, ‘What’s a ‘Yo?’ I think that’s an 11.”

Buying into the game for $100, Demauro decided rolling dice offered the same odds she faced spinning reels over on the penny slots.

Then, at precisely 8:13 p.m., Demauro took the dice in her hands and made gambling history.

While the average craps roll ends in a seven out after eight tosses, Demauro soon left that benchmark in the dust. Every time she threw the dice, a number showed up to pay off bets across the table — all of them except the dreaded 7 which ends the roll.

Talking to Time, Demauro fondly remembered the camaraderie that every craps player builds with their fellow players during a winning roll.

“There was a woman there, and we happened to catch each other’s eyes.

She smiled at me, and I smiled and said, ‘I don’t know how to play the game.’”

“There was a woman there, and we happened to catch each other’s eyes.

She smiled at me, and I smiled and said, ‘I don’t know how to play the game.’”

Demauro proceeded to roll continuously until the clock struck midnight, her session extending over three hours while a crowd of rowdy onlookers cheered her on. Eventually, the dice finally tumbled to show a 7 at 12:31 a.m. — exactly 154 rolls after Demauro started the session.

In doing so, Demauro beat absurdly astronomical odds of 1 in 1.56 trillion, while setting a new world record for the longest craps roll ever observed at 4 hours and 18 minutes. Her run shattered the previous record of 3 hours and 6 minutes by a full hour, setting a standard which is likely to remain intact for decades — if not forever.

Afterward, Demauro offered the following commentary on her history-making roll within a press release issued by the Borgata.

“This was only my second time playing the game of craps, so this was very exciting for me to be a part of history.

I’ve visited Borgata many times as my friend(s) and I always have a lot of fun at the games and we enjoy the ambiance.”

The same press release included comments from Joe Lupo — who serves as vice president of operations for the Borgata — praising Demauro’s stellar roll.

“We are very excited to have hosted this moment for Ms. DeMauro and have our property be a part of this historic event for the gaming industry.

From our loosest slots and multi-million dollar jackpots to our poker tournament success stories and now Patricia’s world-record breaking craps roll, Borgata has quickly become a destination of ‘firsts’ in Atlantic City, known as a place where anything can happen and one-of-a-kind memories such as these are possible.”

How much money she won on that special night remains a closely guarded secret, but based on standard odds and a basic strategy, Demauro undoubtedly turned her $100 stake into hundreds of thousands of dollars. And that doesn’t even cover the untold millions that fellow bettors hauled in on the strength of her seemingly endless roll.

Demauro eventually returned to the Borgata a short time later to sweat the same craps table, but she declined to take the dice in hand for a second time, telling Time that lightning never strikes the same place twice.

“The expectations were too high. I wasn’t ready to be the shooter again.”

2 – Dominic “The Dice Dominator” LoRiggio Teaches Dice Control on the History Channel

If the world record roll owned by Demauro was a stroke of pure luck, Dominic “The Dice Dominator” LoRiggio’s exploits at the craps table are said to be a matter of skill alone.

For decades, LoRiggio has worked the tables as an advantage play craps specialist, one of those rare souls who can actually control how the dice will land. LoRiggio’s prowess as a roller is so legendary that he featured in a documentary entitled “The History Channel Presents: The Dice Dominator.”

According to LoRiggio, he has mastered the elusive art of dice control, a technique he has branded as the “Golden Touch.”

Here’s how it works.

LoRiggio utilizes an eight-step process to give his rolls a better chance of avoiding seven-outs. To begin with, the “Dominator” must be situated at a specific spot along the table, using angles and vectors based on the back wall where the dice must bounce.

Next, he situates the dice just so within his palms, choosing an exact placement designed to influence how they’ll land later on. From there, LoRiggio uses two fingers to hold the dice and flings them toward the wall, making sure to reduce lateral spinning, cut down on the bounce effect, and tumble together in synergy.

In an interview with Vice, the Dominator explained how his Golden Touch approach is grounded in science and strategic thinking.

“Craps is a simple physics problem; it’s a moving projectile in the air.

I’m not Einstein. I’m not going to rewrite the ideas behind physics.

A bunch of people who were taught by me are out there now playing professionally, beating the game of craps with the throw that I developed.”

Thanks to his tried and true methodology and inexplicable ability to beat the house, LoRiggio has become persona non grata within dozens of Sin City casinos. That’s because his eight-step process has been proven to reduce a roller’s odds of sevening out, which normally stand at 16.67% — or one out of every six rolls — using a random approach.

Instead of facing those steep odds against, however, the Dominator’s process brings the likelihood of hitting a seven all the way down to one in 6.23 rolls (16.05%). That shift may not seem like all that much, but within the realm of gambling probabilities, shaving your odds of a seven-out down by over 0.6% actually gives the roller an advantage over the house.

This all might seem like malarkey to many readers, but when you consider how card counters can tilt the odds in their favor at blackjack, dice controllers like the Dominator don’t seem so farfetched.

3 – Stanley Fujitake Sets the Original Record for Longest Consecutive Roll

Long before Demauro’s ridiculously long roll at the Borgata, the world record for craps rollers was held by Stanley Fujitake.

Almost 20 years to the day before Demauro did the deed, Fujitake found himself leaving Hawaii for a jaunt to Las Vegas. He hit the California Hotel & Casino in the Downtown district, and right around midnight, he plunked a single $5 chip down on a pass line bet.

What happened next is the stuff of gambling legend.

For the next three hours and change, Fujitake could do no wrong with the dice in hand. He rolled and rolled, hitting point numbers and Hards to make everybody at the table a winner along with him. His historic roll lasted for 118 throws, hitting 18 pass line wins along the way, all while the seasoned craps veteran upped his ante to the table maximum of $1,000.

This was no fluke, either, as friends of Fujitake reported that he regularly rolled for an hour or more when visiting the California.

Guido Metzger — then a dealer at the Cal who went on to become director of casino operations for Boyd Gaming — later told the gaming industry outlet Boyd’s Buzz what he saw at the next table over.

“They had trouble keeping up with the chip payouts that night.

My table was empty. But there were at least 30 to 40 people trying to place bets at his table.

They couldn’t get fills to the table fast enough and had to start issuing scrip [casino credit] because not enough people were going to the cage and cashing in their chips.”

A few months after Fujitake set the record, California casino manager John Repetti told the News at the Cal how he came to hear about the massive amounts of money changing hands under his watch.

“The first call came and he’d been shooting for an hour, and we were losing a couple hundred thousand dollars at the time. I said if he continued, to call me at every $100,000 loss interval.

Well, the calls kept coming every 15 minutes. Another $100,000. And another $100,000.

After the fourth call and fifth call, I decided I’d better get some clothes on and get downtown.”

While he only pocketed $30,000 or so — not bad for a $5 starting stake — Fujitake’s prowess with the dice enabled fellow bettors to pocket upwards of a million bucks.

Fujitake passed on in 2000, but for craps players of a certain vintage, his memory lives on thanks to a roll that seemed like it might not ever end.

4 – Richard Favela Leads Fellow “Golden Arms” at Annual California Casino Craps Tournament

As the designated “Craps Capital” of Las Vegas courtesy of Fujitake’s run, the California casino went on to host a series of special events for its beloved “Golden Arms.”

Fujitake was the first Golden Arm, an honor given to any roller who can shoot for an hour or more without sevening out. But in his wake, dozens of sharpshooters managed to earn the coveted blue and red shirts, bestowed upon men and women, respectively.

One of the most renowned of the Golden Arms was Richard Favela, who eclipsed the 60-minute roll plateau on four different occasions. You can learn more about Favela’s fascinating craps stories here in an extensive profile by the Los Angeles Times, but as he advises fellow rollers, his abilities are far from lucky.

“I try to control the dice.

You try to throw the dice the same way every time and try to hit the same spot every time.

This gives me better odds of making a point or some numbers.”

Favela’s longest roll ever was clocked at 1 hour and 10 minutes, a far cry from Fujitake’s record-setter at the Cal but still good enough to make him one of the best Golden Arms to ever live.

Joined by a legion of Golden Arms — including Garton Mau, Masao Yamamoto, and Lionel Cazimero — Favela returns to his favorite casino every year for an annual craps tournament.

5 – Frank Scoblete Publishes “Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos” in 1991

Before he became one of the most prolific gambling authors in the business, Frank Scoblete was but a humble stage actor looking for his break.

Studying for a role that involved casino games and gambling back in the ‘80s, Scoblete made his way to Atlantic City alongside fellow actor and future wife Alene Paone. The pair proceeded to play craps until the cows came home, and soon enough, Scoblete ditched playacting for a career as a professional gambler.

Eventually realizing he could subsidize his play by writing about the secrets of advantage play, Scoblete started up Paone Press and published his first book — “Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos: How to Play Craps and Win!” — in 1991.

He never looked back, either, going on to pen dozens of instructional manuals about every casino gameon the floor.

But while Scoblete covers all of the games, craps is clearly his first love, as you can see by scanning his bibliography below.

  • “The Captain’s Craps Revolution” (1993)

  • “Sharpshooter Craps” (1997)

  • “Forever Craps: The Five-Step Advantage Play Method” (2000)

  • “The Craps Underground” (2004)

  • “Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution!” (2005)

  • “Casino Craps: Shoot to Win” (2010)

  • “Cutting Edge Craps” (2010)

  • “I Am a Dice Controller” (2015)

Under his pen name “The Captain,” Scoblete reportedly rolled 147 times in a row without sevening out, a record which stood until Demauro’s breakthrough at the Borgata.

6 – Archie Karas Experiences “The Run” of a Lifetime in 1992

Ask veteran gamblers about their heroes, or even the greatest villains in the game, and chances are good you’ll hear the name Archie Karas come up.

The Greek gambler born Anargyros Nicholas Karabournioti is famous (or infamous depending on who you talk to) for going on “The Run.”

Back in 1992, a down on his luck Karas persuaded a pal to loan him $10,000 for a trip to Vegas. Karas quickly won a pile of cash playing high-stakes poker against legends of the game like Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, and Stu Ungar.

Soon enough, Karas had turned his five-figure loan into nearly $20 million, but predictably, the poker pros refused to give him a game. Itching for action, Karas headed Downtown to the Binion’s Horseshoe casino — known for offering the highest stakes in all of Las Vegas — to take on the craps table.

Owner Benny Binion allowed Karas to wager $100,000 per roll, along with Pass Line and Come bets of up to $300,000, but he wasn’t permitted to take the odds. Nonetheless, Karas kept rolling and hitting his point numbers, to the tune of a $40 million uptick.

As the legend has it, Karas eventually cleaned Binion’s out entirely, claiming every last one of the casino’s $5,000 chips for himself.

And if the story ended there, Karas would surely find himself atop this list.

But alas, gamblers like Karas don’t know when to quit. He kept playing high-stakes craps over the next few years, culminating in a brutal run which saw Karas drop $17 million back to Binion’s. He switched up games after that, trying his hand at baccarat for a spell, but the losing streak continued until Karas was left penniless and destitute.

Not that he minds, though. As he later explained to Cigar Aficionado magazine, Karas didn’t gamble for money. He played for the love of the game.

“You’ve got to understand something… money means nothing to me.

I don’t value it. I have no fear. I don’t care if I lose it.”

I’ve been a millionaire over 50 times and dead broke more than I can count. Probably 1,000 times in my life.

But I sleep the same whether I have ten or ten million dollars in my pocket.”

7 – Anonymous Roller Takes the Tropicana Atlantic City for $5.3 Million

It was June of 2011 when an anonymous high-roller began rolling the bones at the Tropicana Atlantic City.

The bet was $100,000 per toss, and after six hours of almost perfect play, the lucky gentleman had $5.3 million chips to his name.

Tony Rodio, chief executive officer of the Tropicana, later told ABC News that he was happy to see the story make mainstream headlines.

“That’s just how it goes sometimes; if you bet more, you can win more.

We have a strategy of offering the most aggressive and highest table games limits in the Atlantic City market and we’re not going to change that.

If someone wants to take the shot, we’ll take the action.”

Rodio declined to reveal the winner’s identity, but he made sure to mention that the player generously left a $150,000 tip for the dealers on hand to split up.

Conclusion

Craps is a pure gambler’s game, and for the most part, the law of averages will always reign supreme. You’ll collect the dice from the stickman, blow on them or perform some other superstition, and roll a few times before sevening out. But every so often, when everything lines up perfectly, the odds get tossed out of the window as a lucky player can do no wrong.

The seven craps legends listed above were at the right place at the right time, sure enough. But thanks to them, all of us can harbor hopes of rolling pure for hours on end, winning and winning as our chips are stacked to the sky.

Quick Guide on How to Play Craps

Guide to the Best Online Casino Sites in Canada
If you are a new Craps player, you should know that the rules of traditional Craps are not any different from those of the demo version. In this dice, table game, the player must throw 2 dice. The one who throws the dice is known as the shooter in the game.

The other players around the table should then guess the number which will show the 2 dice. That means that they make bets.

The first roll of the dice is called the come-out throw. This roll is very important for the next roll. Right before the first roll of the dice, the player/s must bet on the Pass Line or the Don’t Pass Bar.

When the dice are thrown and show 7 or 11 in sum, the Pass Line bet wins. If there is any other number on the table, it becomes the ‘Point’. The game of Craps goes on with all possible bets according to those rules.

These very same rules apply in free Craps online no download. This is why, as mentioned above, you should play free online Craps. Doing so is a great chance for you to get useful practice so that you can hone your skills.

  1. During gameplay, always remember that the best bets are the Pass Line Bets, as well as the Odds Bets. This is because they generally set the lowest house edge. As a result, there will bring you some really good winnings.

  2. Also, we strongly advise that you avoid the Big 8 and Big 6 bets. This is because these bets have a very high house edge.

  3. You should also avoid the Hard 4 and the Hard 10 odds. Just like the above mentioned, they come with a very high house edge. Inevitably, they will bring you losses.

How to Win at Craps Online

If you are going to playing free online craps or craps online for real money. The main aim is to win. Luckily, for Canadian players, playing online craps you will surely have the real chance to win. Therefore, before you roll the dice, there are several moves you can make, or even avoid, to increase your chances of winning at the game of craps.

There are certain strategies that you can apply when you are playing craps especially when you are in to win real money:

The 3 Point Molly

If you are aspiring to win real money when playing online craps. Then there is 3 Point Molly System. This will give you three numbers that will appear on your corner. This will actually work for you on every bet.

First, make your Pass Line bet. Thereafter, make a Come Line bet. The most important thing is to make sure that you back up every single Come bet with either single or double odds. Avoid making more than two Come bets.

However, when one of your Come bets pull through with a win, then you will be in a good position to drop another Come Bet. Make sure you continue playing that way up until the shooter tosses their point or drops a seven.

The whole idea of the 3-Point Molly is that you will be trying to guard your Pass Line bet with caution using a Come bet.

Stay Away from Big 6 or 8

Have you ever come across Big 6 or 8 on the craps online table. This is actually one of the biggest swindles. Stay away. Surely, you might be persuaded to place a bet in the form of real money since there is the word “big” raises up some impressions of great payouts.

However, the opposite is actually true. Big 6 or 8 pays out real money when a 6 or 8 is rolled. That simply means that C$5 you will win C$5. But the deal here is it needs to be rolled before a 7 on the Come Out roll or you will lose.

Furthermore, if by chance you place a bet on 6 or 8, you will be paid out 7:6. This will comes out as getting real money. The best part now is that, if a 7 is rolled on the Come Out roll it actually not a big deal. You will not lose actually. That difference will give the house a 9% edge on Big 6 or 8 and a 1, 5% on a Place bet.

Common Craps Online Questions

Quite a number of players are eager to know more about the game of online craps. Therefore, by so doing they tend to ask quite a number of questions that are in line with gameplay, payouts and many other things.

Here at Top 10 Canada Casinos we are going to indicate some of the common questions and the answers that most real money players ask.

Who’s the Best Craps Player in the World?

Hand Shooting Craps Dice

Craps isn’t like blackjack, poker, or sports betting, where there are clearly defined skill elements that separate good and bad players. Instead, craps is widely considered a game that deals with dice probabilities and luck.

This makes it difficult to determine the best craps player in the world.

Figuring out the world’s top craps player largely depends upon if you believe in an advantage play technique called controlled shooting (a.k.a. dice control).

Let’s discuss the merits of dice control along with those who are considered to be the world’s best players. We’ll also cover three amateur players who’ve set records and crush casinos.

How Do You Determine a Great Craps Player?

Craps strategy revolves around making the right bets. Moreover, there’s nothing separating players beyond who makes wagers with the lowest house edge.

This means that you could walk into a casino and identify the top players based on who’s making pass line bets and backing them with odds.

But there exists a dice control community who believes that you can influence dice roll probabilities.

These controlled shooters claim that one can change the outcome by holding the dice in a specific manner and practicing one’s toss. This concept is steeped in the logic of sports like bowling or pool, where one can improve their technique and results over time.

To believe in dice control, you also have to believe that it’s possible to influence probabilities when throwing dice off a rubberized, diamond patterned wall. And if you think that controlled shooting is real, then this is definitely a way to determine the world’s best craps player.

Is Controlled Shooting Real?

The biggest problem with controlled shooting is that it’s not easily measured like blackjack card counting or poker. These games offer tangible evidence showing that skilled card counters and poker players make long term profits.

Dice control is different, though, because the jury is out on whether this technique is even real. Furthermore, land based casinos don’t monitor controlled shooters like they do card counters.

Controlled shooters don’t claim to be able to influence results on every roll. But they do purport that dice probabilities can be manipulated through this practice.

A pair of dice offers 36 combinations, including six different ways to make a 7. A dice control expert’s goal is to beat the odds and give themselves a long-term advantage.

  • The average player rolls a 7 on six out of 36 tosses (6:1 ratio).

  • If you’re skilled enough to throw five 7s, then your ratio is 6:25:1.

  • This is more than enough to beat the house edge on bets that involve avoiding 7s.

Controlled shooting begins with setting the dice, or holding them in a specific manner. There are numerous ways to set the dice.

One of the most popular ways is the 3 V shape, where one holds the dice so that the threes form of a “V.” This conceals the 7s while showing other probabilities like a six (5 & 1), hard six (3 & 3), eight (6 & 2), and hard eight (4 & 4).

Once you’re comfortable with your set, you should begin practicing your roll. The goal is to develop a toss that keeps the dice tight and hits the back wall with minimal force.

If you can do this, then you’ll have a much better shot at throwing the dice with consistency and producing desired results. Many dice control advocates rig a homemade craps table so that they can practice away from the casino.

Of course, whether you go to this much effort depends upon if you truly believe in controlled shooting. And it’s very hard to prove that dice control actually works.

Dominic LoRiggio may be the World’s Best Craps Player

Much of what goes into determining the top craps player depends on if you believe in dice control. I’ll suspend disbelief while discussing some of the world’s most notable craps players.

Dominic “The Dominator” LoRiggio is often given credit for being the top controlled shooter.

LoRiggio has authored several books, including Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution! – Win at Craps Using a Controlled Throw, and is a renowned expert on dice control.

LoRiggio’s gambling career began in the late 1980s as a card counter. He eventually became interested in craps after reading multiple books by Frank Scoblete.

He started practicing controlled shooting in the late 90s. LoRiggio says that it took approximately six months of practice before he became really good.

He met Scoblete on the Las Vegas craps tables and the pair began playing together. LoRiggio recalled how they each rolled for half an hour straight during their first session together.

LoRiggio preaches practice regarding controlled shooting. And he avidly suggests that you can influence results, even with casinos requiring that your dice tosses hit the back wall.

Most of the tales involving LoRiggio’s success come from himself, Scoblete, and other controlled shooting experts.

The Dominator says that he once had 56 straight rolls before the first 7 came up. LoRiggio also says that he had one session where he rolled 30, 33, and 38 consecutive times back to back to back.

Thanks to his reputation as a craps master, LoRiggio was once featured in a History Channel special along with Scoblete.

LoRiggio says that the show made it wrongly seem like he was part of a dice control team. But he also praises them for doing an accurate job on portraying his strategy and how he acts in the casino.

Today, LoRiggio teaches Golden Arm Touch seminars with Scoblete to make a living. He also remains a staunch supporter of controlled shooting.

Other Notable Craps Players

Frank Scoblete

As mentioned above, Scoblete is another famed craps player and dice control expert. Scoblete lays claim to an 89-roll streak without a 7 being rolled.

While Scoblete is a respected craps player, he’s even better known as an author.

Some of his books include Beat the Craps out of the Casinos, Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution, and Beat the One-Armed Bandits.

Scoblete often speaks of a mysterious craps legend named the “Captain”.

He claims that the Captain is the greatest craps player he’s ever seen. Scoblete references a time when the Captain tossed the dice 147 consecutive times before seven-ing out.

Richard Favela

Richard Favela was featured in a 2017 LA Times piece about controlled shooting.

Favela has earned the Golden Arm award four times in his career. Anybody who’s rolled for one hour or more is eligible for this honor.

“If you place the dice a certain way, the odds of throwing a seven are less,” says Favela.

“You see a lot of people just throwing the dice any which way and there’s just hoping on luck. But when you try and control the dice, it works.”

Favela also claims that he “never lost” within the first eight years that he started playing at the California Casino & Hotel.

Garton Mau

Garton Mau was introduced in the LA Times article as a 4-time Golden Arm champion.

He proved his skills to the media by producing 72 consecutive rolls without seven-ing out. His run that night lasted nearly an hour.

The multi winner of California Casino’s Golden Arm tournament continues to play around the Vegas area.

Three Amateurs Who Crushed Craps

Patricia Demauro

Many craps controlled shooters brag about their long-lasting rolls. But the longest streak in history belongs to a complete amateur named Patricia Demauro.

According to Time, Demauro rolled for 154 straight times at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino& Spa on May 23, 2009. She lasted for 4 hours and 18 minutes, breaking the world record for both the most consecutive rolls and the longest time rolling.

Stanford University statistics Professor Thomas Cover says that the odds of this happening are a one in 1.56 trillion. Your odds are far better of winning the lottery (one in 100 million) or being struck by lightning (one in a million).

“Let’s say we have a million gamblers trying a thousand events at any one time,” said Cover. “That’s a billion different rolls of craps.” Out of a billion different games, the probability of getting an event that special is reduced to one in 1,000. “It’s not out of the realm of possibility.”

What makes the story more amazing is that Demauro did all this on just her second ever craps session.

The New Jersey grandmother went to the Borgata with her friend, John Capra. She initially started playing penny slot machines, only to later try craps with Capra after she got bored.

Demauro received the dice at 8:13pm and started with a bankroll worth $100. She didn’t even know the best wagers and relied on Capra’s advice.

Demauro established a point number of eight. And this is where her journey began since she didn’t roll a seven until 12:21am.

“There was a woman there, and we happened to catch each other’s eyes,” Demauro says, “She smiled at me, and I smiled and said, ‘I don’t know how to play the game.'”

Her record of 156 straight rolls is both an official and unofficial record.

The previous unofficial record was set by the Captain in 2005 when he tossed 147 straight times (as per Scoblete). The official record is 118 rolls by a player named Stanley Fujitake in 1989.

Demauro wouldn’t say how much money she made. However, experts believe that she likely turned her initial $100 bankroll into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Stanley Fujitake

Before Patricia Demauro, Stanley Fujitake was the record setting amateur who defied all odds. He rolled 118 consecutive times before seven-ing out, which became the official casino record at the time.

The Oahu native was playing craps at the California Casino & Hotel on May 28, 1989. His legendary streak began with a $5 bet on pass line.

Fujitake began increasing his pass line bets as he continued rolling winners. He increased his wager to the $1,000 table maximum to take full advantage of the hot streak.

Guido Metzger, who was dealing at a nearby table that night, noticed how more and more people began squeezing onto Fujitake’s table.

“They had trouble keeping up with the chip payouts that night,” said Metzger, who now manages Boyd Gaming’s downtown Vegas casinos.

“My table was empty. But there were at least 30 to 40 people trying to place bets at his table. They couldn’t get fills to the table fast enough and had to start issuing scrip [casino credit] because not enough people were going to the cage and cashing in their chips.”

Fujitake had rolled for almost three hours before his streak finally came to an end.

“Half an hour is average, over an hour is amazing, but more than three hours is totally astounding,” said California casino manager John Repetti at the time.

Fujitake earned $30,000 on what started with a simple $5 bet. The casino paid another $750,000 in winnings to other players who made bets on his rolls.

Fujitake passed away in 2000, but his legend still lives on in the craps community.

Anonymous High Roller Who Won $5.3 Million at Tropicana Atlantic City

In June 2011, a craps high roller won $5.8 million from the Tropicana Casino and Resort. This came just months after famed blackjack player Don Johnson burned the Atlantic City casino for $5.8 million.

Tony Rodio, Tropicana’s CEO, spoke with the Press of Atlantic City about the matter. And he said that the player got hot during a six-hour craps session.

The high roller was really excited about the win and left a $150,000 tip that was divided up among the Tropicana dealers.

Rodio didn’t give the craps player’s name for privacy purposes. But he did say that it isn’t Johnson, who went on a $15 million blackjack win streak in 2010 and ’11.

The CEO added that the craps player will be invited back any time they want. The anonymous winner was betting $100,000 at the time of their windfall.

Tropicana is known as a destination for high stakes gamblers. And they kept this tradition going by inviting the $5.3 million winner back.

Can You Play Craps like the World’s Best?

Let’s assume that dice control doesn’t really work. If this is the case, then you can play like any of the world’s best craps players simply by making the right bets.

But what wagers do you need to make to lower the house edge? Let’s start with the two basic craps bets:

  • Pass line = 1.41% house edge

  • Don’t pass line = 1.36% house edge

How Does Pass Line Work?

A pass line bet is placed on the come-out roll, which is the first roll of a new round.

Pass line wins when a 7 or 11 is tossed on the come out, and it loses when a 2, 3, or 12 are thrown. If you roll any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10), a point is established.

You then need the shooter to toss the point number before a 7 in order to win your pass line bet. This wager pays 1:1 and has 251:244 odds of winning.

How does Don’t Pass Line Work?

A don’t pass line bet is also placed on the come-out roll. Don’t pass line wins when a 2 or 3 is rolled, loses when a 7 or 11 is tossed, and pushes when a 12 is rolled.

Any other number establishes a point. And you need a 7 to be rolled before the point number to win.

Don’t pass line pays 1:1 for a win and offers 976:949 odds of winning.

Back These Bets with Odds

Pass line and don’t pass line already offer you a good chance to win. But you can lower the house edge even further by backing these bets with odds.

Odds is a side wager that you put behind either pass line or don’t pass line once the point is established. You should notify the dealer before putting an odds wager behind your original pass line or don’t pass line bet.

The best thing about odds is that it doesn’t have a house edge and pays at true odds of winning. The payouts depend upon if you’re backing pass line (a.k.a. “laying odds”) or don’t pass line (a.k.a. “laying odds”).

Here are the payouts for when you place odds behind a pass line wager:

  • 2 to 1 on point numbers of 4 and 10.

  • 3 to 2 on points of 5 and 9.

  • 6 to 5 on points of 6 and 8.

Here are payouts for when you put odds behind a don’t pass line bet to:

  • 1 to 2 for point numbers of 4 and 10.

  • 2 to 3 for points of 5 and 9.

  • 5 to 6 for points of 6 and 8.

The amount of odds that you can bet differs based on the casino. Many casinos have 5x or fewer odds.
A select few Vegas casinos offer 20x odds and above. These include Main Street Station (20x odds) and the Cromwell (100x).

Ideally, you’ll take the highest odds you can get because this lowers the house edge more. The table below shows how low the house advantage can be when you take more odds:

Odds Pass Line/Come Don’t Pass Line/Don’t Come
0x 1.41% house edge 1.36% house edge
1x 0.848% 0.682%
2x 0.606% 0.455%
Full Double Odds 0.572% 0.431%
3x 0.471% 0.341%
3x 4x 5x 0.374% 0.273%
5x 0.326% 0.227%
10x 0.184% 0.124%
20x 0.099% 0.065%
100x 0.021% 0.014%

The obvious drawback is that you have to bet more money when you take higher odds. And even without a house advantage, this gets really expensive.

For example, you’d need to bet an extra $200 and put 20x odds behind a $10 wager. But if you can afford to take the highest odds, then it’ll make you more likely to win and be a better player.

Conclusion

Much of what goes into determining the world’s best craps player depends upon whether you believe in controlled shooting.

Those who believe can point to Dominic LoRiggio as the top player. After all, he has the strongest reputation among the control shooting community.

Other notable players who can challenge for the top spot include Frank Scoblete, Richard Favela, and Garton Mau.
If you don’t believe in controlled shooting, then anybody who makes the best craps wagers can be a top player. This involves making a pass line or don’t pass line bet backed with high odds.

The most serious craps player should head to Las Vegas and take advantage of the highest odds they can. Or you can simply bet whatever odds you can afford.

In any case, craps offers a low house edge that can make anybody feel like a pro.
