Conclusion

Canada has many more gambling venues that may appeal to you. However, this list is focusing on the most popular places, as they have already gained a reputation among players worldwide. A feature of top Canadian casinos is that mostly they can offer an all-inclusive service, i.e. there are plenty of activities to do other than gambling. The best options are worldwide popular Casino de Montreal or, situated in such a picturesque location, Casino Niagara. Both places have mostly positive reviews and can boast of high-quality service.

Generally, if you rack the brains over the most suitable alternative, pay attention to such points as:

  • Positive reviews

  • A level of reputation in the market

  • Commission rate (reject the option directly, in case it is too high)

  • Provided types of service

  • Available games.

You also have the second option, if you do not want to go anywhere and prefer to stay at home and enjoy your favorite games, then just visit online casinos in Canada where you will find most popular online games, like online blackjack and online roulette.

Good luck in selecting the right venue for you, but remember!

The smarter you play, the luckier you’ll be…

The 10 Best Poker & Casino Scenes from TV Shows

We recently had a look at our favorite casino and poker scenes on the silver screen and now we’re taking a look at how gambling has played out on the small screen: TV Shows. There have been many examples of where casino and poker games raised the stakes in our favorite tv shows. From comedies to dramas, there are many options out there. We combed through the archives to compile a list of our 10 favorites.

The Simpsons

One of the funniest casino scenes on any tv shows was when The Simpsons had a town hall meeting and Principal Skinner floated the idea of legalized gambling. Of course, he’s met with the sound of crickets when he suggests that the proceeds could go to support the underfunded public schools, but he’s met with vociferous cheer when the idea of just having a place to gamble comes up. The crowd even cheers when Mr. Burns says building a casino would give him the change to “tighten his stranglehold on this dismal town”. There are some great one-liners in this scene that will make you chuckle.

Sure, it’s a cartoon, but they covered many of the town hall topics that come up when cities consider opening up a casino. There’s a rich investor who probably stands to benefit, the topic of redirecting profits to help public programs is always front and center, and there are always moral concerns about gambling. The Simpsons just presents these topics in a more comical, sarcastic way.

South Park

In the South Park episode Red Man’s Greed, the owners of the Three Feathers Indian Casino have purchased the town of South Park. The citizens are being forced off the land unless they come up with $300,000 to buy the city back. The residents have a plan, though, as they band as a group and cobble together $10,000. The idea is that if they put all of the money they have on one number and win, they’ll have enough to buy the town back. They’ll also have $50,000 on top of it. They miraculously win and save the town but instead of stopping there, they decide to let it all ride again thinking that if they win again, they could “save the town and be super rich”, as Mr. Garrison puts it.

Of course, they end up losing it all on the next spin.

Of course, an entire town coming together to put their savings on one roulette number is unrealistic. However, it’s worth pointing out that many gamblers don’t know when to stop. Even when beating the odds, some feel like they can do it again and that’s part of the lesson that’s here.

Boardwalk Empire

One of HBO’s most underrated tv shows of the last decade is Boardwalk Empire, which focuses on the origins of Atlantic City. In this scene, Nucky Thompson, who is played by Steve Buscemi, isn’t taking any crap from his patrons at his casino. First, he cuts off Arnold Rothstein, who is up on the house and is trying to take from them. After, a different customer talks trash to him and then throws some of his cash at Nucky, which results in a quick two-piece beatdown before Nucky boots him from the joint.

There’s far too much drama in this scene compared to what actually happens at casinos. To start, when a casino cuts you off, they cut you off, so Rothstein’s clever line that the “casino’s credit is good for me” would never fly. Meanwhile, Nucky got too handsy with the second customer. Typically, security will just surround the player and remove him quietly as not to disturb anyone else.

The Office

One of the classic episodes from The Office is when Michael Scott decides to have a casino night. Each person in the office has to pick a charity, and the winner at the end of the night gets to donate $500. Of course, much of the comedy comes in when they start picking their charities as Scott wants to donate to “Afghanistanis With Aids”. The awkwardness continues when Michael Scott says he has “two queens on casino night” as he accidentally invites both of his love interests to the event and he add that extra touch when he says he’ll “drop a deuce on everybody”.

Note: This is one of the more popular episodes because after the casino action, Jim finally confesses his love for Pam and they kiss.

Although we don’t see a ton of actual gaming in the episode, it generally looks quite accurate. The setup is downstairs in the warehouse and everyone seems to be having fun with the various options available.

Friends

Phoebe from Friends frequently seems to find herself in some goofy situations. One of the more memorable ones is when she’s playing the slots and has an older granny lurking as she plays. After she confronts her, they both have a lurking competition, checking out to see who plays the slots but comes up empty. Eventually, Phoebe beats the lurker to the machine to push the button but the lady puts in the quarter. This causes a controversy and Phoebe is kicked out of the casino.

Silly as it sounds, this is actually a common situation in casinos that security has to keep an eye on. Slots players believe in “loaded slots”, which is when someone sits and plays slots for a while and then leaves without winning. The general thought is they’ve done a lot of the work. And now the next person that comes in could benefit.

Friends II

One of the earlier Friends episodes saw the six buddies engage in a game of poker. While both trios of guys and gals are involved, much of the action centers around Rachel and Ross, who are experiencing some tension at the table. Cocky Ross finds himself losing to Rachel, who continues to remind him that he’s losing.

From what we can tell, this looks fairly authentic. Most of the tv shows’ scene is focused on the dialogue. But from what we see with the betting, the bluffing and the results, it all looks fairly accurate.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David just can’t seem to avoid those awkward situations and poker night is no different. Playing a game with his close friends, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has bluffed everyone out of the biggest pot of the night. Nobody even challenged her. David starts going around the table to see what others had to see why they didn’t go in and it turns out one player had an Ace-high that he decided to fold. David can’t believe and calls him out, crossing the line with some cringy insults that mostly felt like locker room talk, but clearly offended others. They, in turn, call Larry out for his inappropriate comments and call it a night.

Leaving aside whether the players overreacted, the gaming itself was quite accurate. They went around the table and nobody felt they had strong enough cards to go in. A couple of players had a two and a four, and others weren’t confident either. Louis-Dreyfus was the last player in the order, so that helped her out that particular round.

The Wire

Poker starts to become an integral part of one of our favorite tv shows, The Wire in Season 4. The show’s top gangster, Marlo, has an affinity for the game. Omar, the street vigilante, gets a tip on a high-stakes game and he ends up breaking in and robbing Marlo and everyone else. While Omar didn’t know what he was doing at the time, it would end up leading to his demise later as Marlo would hit back in search of his own revenge.

We can’t be too critical here as we don’t see a lot of game. The scene starts off with Marlo winning with a full house but that’s when Omar breaks in, rips and runs.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

You might not realize it but poker was a common theme on Star Trek: The Next Generation. It is featured in at least 10 separate episodes. From Data wearing a visor to Commander William T. Riker bluffing his colleagues out of pots, there were all sorts of interludes with the game.

In this scene, they’re playing Five-Card Stud with nothing wild. Data sees the game as simple as his robotic strategy is to do the math then determine the strength of each opponent’s hand based on how much they bet. Of course, that doesn’t take into account bluffing. Eventually, he gets bluffed out of the pot even though he has three queens.

Star Trek did a better job than most tv shows to ensure accuracy here. The players went around with their bets, carefully examining their cards and making their decisions. Of course, the fun element in this was Data. He was trying to calculate both the poker odds and whether Commander Riker was showing his poker face.

How I Met Your Mother

In this episode of How I Met Your Mother, Marshall Eriksen is marrying Lily Aldrin in Atlantic City. However, Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) has come to the boardwalk on a business trip. He’s clearly been in the casino many times. He engages in a serious game with three other Asian men – who seem to recognize him – although it’s completely unclear what the game is.

We’re all but left to think that this game is merely a comedic element of the episode. The players keep sliding in chips, betting one after another before anything happens in the game. Only then are cards dealt and then tiles too. Then the players all get up and change seats, which is followed by the dealer rolling the dice. After that, Stinson signals to a lady to spin a big wheel. Then, on the advice of Marshall, he splits his tiles. He chooses one hand from six women who are holding out closed fists in hopes of finding the jellybean. When he does, the crowd erupts and he wins some massive jackpot. Whatever happened here is completely unrealistic.

Top 10 Memorable Casino Movie & TV Scenes

Casino Aus Staff | September 4, 2020 | Updated on: September 24th, 2020

Our Favourite Casino Movie & TV Scenes

Whether you’re a movie buff or TV junkie not there are some awesome classic and memorable casino scenes and gambling scenes over the past several decade’s everyone remembers. We’ve compiled a list of comedies, dramas, action movies and TV shows that we think deserve to make the list.

We’d like to showcase our favourite and tell you why they made our list. Plus, we are online casinos we think you will love with each notable scene.

1. Casino Royale 1967

A group of spectators are excitedly and eagerly watching two men playing poker. This movie also showcases the fabulous 1960s fashion. Ladies are dressed in beautiful gowns of pastel, touting expertly coifed hair, and wearing the dramatic, black Twiggy-esque eyeliner. The men are dressed to the 9’s, in luxurious suits, seen taking long drags on their cigars, overlooking their cards, carefully waiting to play their next ‘hand.’

2. Casino

“Casino” is a 1995 American epic crime-drama film directed by “Martin Scorsese” and starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci & Sharon Stone and many other notable actors and actresses. This clip features Robert De Niro, playing a character named Ace, who is in charge of running several casinos – the head honcho and one not to be trifled with.

In this scene, Ace is dressed in a lemon-meringue coloured suit, a definite nod to the times, is getting upset at a patron who has cheekily propped their sock feet up on the poker table. After the player refuses to take his feet off the table and many profanities are exchanged, Ace, asks security to throw the player out.

There is so much more to this movie than this scene we highly recommend you watch it.

3. Casino Royale – 007 Bond Movie

The scene is set within a private room in a casino where four high rollers are betting on poker, one of them, of course, being, Mr. Bond. One of the standout moments in this film is the tense scene where large bets are placed, totalling over 100 million dollars.

4. What Happens in Vegas

Luck and fate were on Ashton Kutcher’s side, who plays the character, Jack Fuller, in “What Happens in Vegas,” when he deposits a quarter and wins the 3-million-dollar jackpot at a pokie machine at a Los Vegas casino. He then has to fight with this newly married wife on who actually gets the money!

5. The Gambler

Genius university professor by day and hard-core gambler by night. The last scene is the nail-biter, we won’t ruin it for you but it is an all or nothing play on roulette. The words “all on black,” are said.

6. The Office – “Casino Night”

The best place to watch the full episode is Netflix!

I don’t think anyone who watches the office can forget this episode. Designed as a fundraiser for multiple charities, this episode takes a play on the allure and draw of the casino to foreshadow many character plotlines for upcoming episodes.

At casino night the warehouse is decorated in blue velvet, there are casino hosts, servers and staff waiting on guests.
There are neon lights hovering over the game types, like craps, blackjack, roulette and a cashier’s table!

This episode is full of laughs and will hit you with some good ole’ nostalgia. Arguably one of the best episodes in this TV series – this is a must-watch.

7. Ocean’s 13

The Ocean’s trilogy of movies are great, packed with action, superb cinematography and top-notch actors and actresses, these movies will keep you wanting more.

In Ocean’s 13 there is a standout casino robbery scene involving a highly-technical heist. The heist is strategically planned with all members of the group “winning,” at various games and tables around the casino, while they have planned a system-wide shutdown.

8. F.R.I.E.N.D.S

The best place to watch the full episode is Netflix!

Friends, one of the favourite TV shows of the ’90s has a two-part, season five series finale based in a Las Vegas casino.

The casino is full of patrons playing a roulette table, spinning pokies and trying their luck at poker. The notable scene in this episode is with Monica and Chandler playing roulette.

With seemingly endless luck, Monica wins and wins. Feeling courageous Chandler puts a bet on a marriage proposal, for the next dice throw.

Watch the two-part finale to discover see if they end up tying the knot.

9. Rain Man

This cult classic movie, Rain Man, stars Dustin Hoffman as Raymond, and Tom Cruise as Charlie, biological brothers.

After Raymond’s brother, Charlie, discovers his incredible abilities of memory and math, Charlie decides to take Raymond to the casino. This duo gets gussied up in grey suits, new haircuts and polished shoes to put their best foot forward at the poker table,As much fun as playing casino games, there is a strategy that goes into winning. Do you think you are as talented as Raymond?

10. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

This 1998 film features a prominent scene where a group of so-called high-rollers have gathered to play the card game, Brag. This game most closely resembles poker and is played in a nearly similar fashion. A young man named Eddie, a self-proclaimed card shark enters into the game, and unfortunately loses, to a wealthy and powerful “businessman,” aka, crime-lord and ends up owing a whopping £500,000.

The Best Casino Movie Scenes of All Time

The high-paced energy of casinos has long been milked by the film industry to up the ante and increase the sense of action in many movies. There’s no denying that the adrenaline-filled atmosphere of casinos make for perfect movie setting. The dice are rolling, the reels are spinning, and the stakes are high; if there’s one thing you can safely bet on, it’s the fact that it’s usually a nail-biter of a scene that will have you teetering on the edge of your seat.

For all you avid casino buffs out there, we’ve rounded up some of the most memorable movie scenes which are centered around gambling dens and all the exhilarating titillation they inspire.

Casino

Casino

No casino movie list would be complete without an obvious mention to this iconic film which was released back in 1995. Director Martin Scorsese really went all out, assembling an all star cast, including the likes of Robert de Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone among others. Many of the characters in the film are actually based on real people, which makes it all the more epic. With so many awesome scenes to choose from, it was hard for us to pinpoint just one. However, the one that takes the cake would have to be where a cowboy puts his feet up on a blackjack table, only to be harshly reprimanded for this huge lack of respect by being literally thrown out the doors.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale

The return of ‘007’ in the form of Daniel Craig has long been hailed iconic due to its introduction of Bond to the newer generations. The high stakes poker games which takes place at Monte Carlo casino between Bond and Le Chiffres, a known financier of terrorism left a lasting impression on many a movie-goer. No doubt the best scene has to be when Bond turns his luck around and wins the game hands down by revealing a straight flush.

Rain Man

This 80s classic directed by Barry Levinson follows the antics of one Charlie Babbit and his autistic brother as they make their way across the US. Despite his apparent deficiencies, Raymond, played by the affable Dustin Hoffman, happens to have a very special gift to make up for them; he’s a natural at card counting, a strategy used in blackjack to increase the player’s chances of winning. The pair take to the gambling dens of Las Vegas to make the most of Raymond’s special abilities, drawing a strong crowd of onlookers as they win big everywhere they go. One of the most particular scenes in this movie has to be where the guys are accused of card counting, showing the realities of casinos and how seriously they take any form of what is perceived as cheating.

The Hangover

The Hangover

Hailed as one of the most popular movies of all time, the Hangover is a must-watch, if only for its hilarious yet incredibly accurate portrayal of the Las Vegas experience. The first film made its debut back in 2009 and still manages to delight movie buffs the world over.

Its comedic value is evident, following the antics of four best friends who go on a bachelor party in Vegas, where a night of shameless debauchery quickly turns sour the morning after, with some pretty side-splitting consequences.

One of the most iconic scenes in this epic movie happens to be set in a casino, where Alan, played by Zach Galifianakis, tries his luck at the blackjack table, where he uses his newly learnt skills (honed by Beat the Dealer) to win the ransom money the boys so desperately need to pay off the kidnappers who took their friend.

Ocean’s Eleven

A casino movie featuring the likes of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, just to name a few, this award-winning feature film gave rise to another two sequels as well as the more recent spin-off, Ocean’s 8. The plot follows Danny Ocean and his plan to orchestrate a heist that involves robbing three of the most notable casinos in Las Vegas. The infamous poker scene is one of the memorable, establishing the vibe that runs throughout the entire movie – one of intrigue, comedy and wickedly good crime.

The Best Historical Dramas on Netflix to Watch Right Now

Transport yourself to another time

keishahatchettbiopic.jpg

Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page, Bridgerton

They say those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it, so let's learn everything there is to know about history because I definitely don't want to repeat anything we've done ever, especially in the last few years. But why stick your nose in a book when you can watch history play itself out via the best historical TV dramas available with the press of a few buttons? The good news is that Netflix has a huge catalog of them to choose from.

While these shows may not always be super accurate, they make history exciting with high-stakes drama and opulent costumes that are most certainly way out of your budget. If you're among those who can't get enough of these racy period pieces, grab a cup of tea and settle in for some quality entertainment. We've got you covered with a list of the best historical dramas currently streaming on Netflix.

Looking for more recommendations of what to watch next? We have a ton of them! And if you're looking for more hand-picked recommendations based on shows you love, we have those too.

The Dig

Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James star in this film set in the late 1930s about a wealthy widow who hires an archaeologist to dig up the large burial mounds on her property, only to uncover the remains of a large ship from the Dark Ages. The movie is a fictionalized version of the real story of the 1939 Sutton Hoo excavation, and it also deals a lot with the complicated relationships between the characters as they grow closer the longer the excavation continues. It's like the old saying goes: nothing is sexier than being covered in dirt and dust. -Allison Picurro

Bridgerton

The first fruit of Shonda Rhimes' massive Netflix development deal follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) through her first season out in 1800s London society and her rollercoaster journey of falling in love with a reluctant duke (Rege-Jean Page), and it introduces us to the rest of the Bridgerton siblings and their immediate social circle as the elusive Lady Whistledown mysteriously catalogs all of the their gossip for her anonymous column. It's Pride and Prejudice meets Gossip Girl and Scandal in the most delicious way possible. Heads up: Though the art for the series may make it look like a demure relaxing binge, Shonda and company stay true to the spirit of the source material, and things get very steamy as you get further into the season. -Megan Vick

Hollywood

Ryan Murphy created this drama following actors during Hollywood's "Golden Age," a movie boom after World War II, as they chased their dreams to make it big in Tinseltown in an industry that doesn't normally treat outsiders well. There's revisionist storytelling here with real characters mingling with those made up just for the film, and it posits a situation where life today could be better if things went just a little differently back then. Darren Criss, Dylan McDermott, and Jim Parsons star.

Kingdom

This South Korean drama set around 1592 is like Game of Thrones, only better. A king falls ill and sparks a plague that finds people rising from the dead. With the disease starting to spread, it's up to the Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) to not only protect his father's deadly secret but also find a way to keep the plague from advancing toward the capital while thwarting a coup against his family. Season 2, which is now streaming, picks up with the undead now roaming freely and the Crown Prince working to gain allies to help him reclaim the throne while the Queen Consort Cho (Kim Hye-jun) plots to control the undead.

The Crown

This lavish series offers an intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's reign, chronicling her personal drama, romances, political rivalries and the historical events that shaped not only her life but that of the latter half of the 20th century. Netflix announced in January that the series will come to an end after Season 5, with Imelda Staunton serving as the eponymous monarch. Seasons 1-2, which explore the early years of Elizabeth's reign, starred Claire Foy in the titular role. Olivia Colman took over for Foy in Season 3 as the queen entered middle age. Season 4 again stars Colman and brings the series into the 1980s, which means Lady Di (Emma Corrin) and Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) join the mix.

Alias Grace

Based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, this Canadian limited series centers on Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), an Irish immigrant and domestic servant accused of murdering her boss and his housekeeper. It's a gripping crime drama with biting social commentary as a psychologist weighs in on whether or not Grace, who'd been subjected to abuse at the hands of her wealthy overlord, should be pardoned by reason of insanity.

Peaky Blinders

In the aftermath of WWI, Britain is a hotbed for despair and criminal acts as returning soldiers, regular citizens, and local gangs fight for survival in the midst of economic upheaval. This drama set in 1919 centers on the infamous Peaky Blinders gang led by Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a war hero who aspires to someday go legitimate. His daily operations are threatened by the arrival of Inspector Chester Campbell, a hotshot out of Belfast looking to rid Britain's streets of the rampant crime.

The Borgias

This Showtime series chronicles Rodrigo's ascension to popehood through bribery, extortion and torture during the Renaissance era. The series, which boasts an all-star cast anchored by Jeremy Irons as the corrupt cardinal, features sex, drama and blasphemy which means it's definitely worth checking out.

The Last Kingdom

If you're really into Game of Thrones, you'll probably dig this action-packed drama set in 9th-century England when the country was divided into seven kingdoms -- all at war. Based on the novel of the same name by Bernard Cornwell, the story follows Uhtred who must walk a dangerous path as he is forced to choose between the nation he was born in and the one in which he was raised. It might not have dragons but you'll never be bored with the interconnected drama and awesome sword fights. Season 4, which is now streaming, finds our hero the most vulnerable he's ever been.

Marco Polo

This epic original 2014 Netflix drama follows the famed explorer as he navigates risky interpersonal relationships while at the court of Kublai Khan in what is now Beijing. While the series is grounded in political rivalries and sexual intrigue, it also takes you out on the open seas where the explorer finds adventure and, of course, plenty of danger.

Ripper Street

Mr. Darcy himself Matthew MacFadyen headlines this drama mystery set in the wake of Jack the Ripper's reign of terror in London in 1888. The 2012 series follows the members of H Division, a special task force trying their best to maintain order in a chaotic city rife with paranoia and the rumblings of a seedy underground criminal network.

Medici: The Magnificent

For those who were devastated over Robb Stark's untimely end on Game of Thrones, this one's especially for you. Richard Madden again plays a conflicted heartthrob who must take over the family business upon the sudden death of his father, but you won't have to worry about any Red Weddings. Instead, the 2016 series serves up family drama, steamy romances and a gorgeous Italian backdrop during the Renaissance. The third and final season, which is now available, will see the Medici fortune threatened by a brewing war.

TURN: Washington's Spies

Based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Rose, this series -- which originally ran on AMC for four seasons starting in 2014 -- turns the Revolutionary War into a thrilling spy adventure. Set in a dangerous world filled with double agents, code-breaking and covert operations, the series follows a secretive network charged with uncovering British military strategies. Their exciting adventures serve as the foundation for modern espionage and prove that history is so much cooler when you throw spies into the mix.

Call the Midwife

Perhaps the most modern series on this list, this acclaimed BBC show follows Jenny (Jessica Raine), a midwife who is surprised to find herself assigned to a convent in London during the 1950s instead of the private hospital she was expecting. Surrounded by nuns, she soon develops close friendships with the other nurses as their lives intersect with the women and families that they treat. If Friends were a period drama, it probably wouldn't look like this but you should check the series out anyway.

Reign

Considered more of a historical fantasy than an accurate depiction of Queen Mary of Scotland's life at French court, the CW took many liberties with the story -- most notably the costumes which included off-the-rack pieces from designers like Alexander McQueen. However, the series turned Mary and Francis' engagement and eventual marriage into an epic tale of romance and tragedy, and kept you on your toes with dangerous liaisons and supernatural mysteries within the confines of a gorgeous castle.

Cable Girls

History, feminism and progress intersect in this Spanish-language drama set just before the financial crisis of 1929. The story explores a world quickly changing through four women from different backgrounds who are hired as telephone operators in what turns out to be a progressive workplace. A tale of sisterhood as they attempt to break through the glass ceiling, the show will leave you feeling every bit empowered and also longing for their stylish threads.
