When is the GTA 6 release date? It’s hard to say, as Rockstar usually releases a new entry into the franchise every four to five years, which means we should have had one two years ago. As you know, however, we got Red Dead Redemption, instead. Hardly a rough trade off, sure.

The previous Grand Theft Auto game was almost inconceivably massive and entertaining. No wonder we’re so desperate for a GTA 6 release date. The game’s sales numbers are off the charts, too, and player numbers remain impressive years on from release. This is largely thanks to Rockstar’s excellent and consistent updates to GTA Online. So, naturally, we’re thinking hard about what’s coming next: GTA 6.

While Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn’t been announced yet we’re very much hoping for some GTA 6 news soon. Our insatiable appetite for biting satire and a good carjacking knows no bounds. We’ve rounded up all the latest GTA 6 rumours in one place with our suggestions for what we’d like to see, no matter what form the new Grand Theft Auto ends up taking. Below you’ll find everything we know about GTA 6:

GTA 6 release date

When is GTA 6 coming out? If the series’ typical development timeline of about four to five years between entries is anything to go by, we should have got GTA 6 in 2018.

With no E3 2020 and no news from Rockstar at the Summer Game Fest there’s still absolutely no indication of when we’ll hear more about the next GTA game, either.

We do know that when stunt actor Tim Neff’s CV surfaced claiming he had credits on Grand Theft Auto 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2, it proved to be a fake. It should have been obvious, really: the CV didn’t match Neff’s IMDB page, it had spelling errors, and it wasn’t taken down immediately by Rockstar once the story was widely known.

When we asked Neff for details he said: “That isn’t my page, account or résumé. I don’t even know that website. I worked on GTA 5 a long time ago and haven’t done anything since. Sorry for the confusion. It seems I’m being trolled online really badly.”

It’s not the first time GTA 6 has appeared on someone’s CV, either. A 3D artist who briefly worked for Rockstar’s India branch included a GTA 6 mention on his resume before it was removed. According to Bibin Michael, he worked on creating concept vehicles matching the real world for GTA 5 and GTA 6. GTA Forums member ApolloThunder also noted Michael is credited in the thank you page for Red Dead Redemption 2, which backs up the claim he has worked with Rockstar in the past, at least.

GTA 6 news

Nowadays we tend to wait the best part of a decade between new games like GTA and Borderlands, but that might not necessarily be the case going forward. In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, suggested that better development tools and bigger teams could shorten these gaps. It could also mean that such “games may be a bit shorter” while still being robustly supported post-launch.

To mitigate crunch time is another reason the next GTA could be shorter, as Kotaku says in its report, “One plan that management has laid out for the next game, a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, is to start out with a moderately sized release (which, by Rockstar’s standards, would still be a large game) that is then expanded with regular updates over time, which may help mitigate stress and crunch.” Rockstar employees are speaking out about the positive changes the company is making after it was scrutinised following the crunch time over Red Dead Redemption 2. Although there’s still no timeline on a GTA 6, it means the next GTA might be slightly smaller when it does release.

We might as well all go home now, actually: Grand Theft Auto 6 is already out on, er, PlayStation 2? Last year we noticed the iffy-looking GTA 6 box art above in a photo posted to Reddit from a bootleg stand in Brazil. Using our well-practised reporting nous, we detected that the box art might not quite be legit. Either that, or Rockstar is showing consoles from two generations back some unlikely love, and Summer Glau has made her live-action videogame debut.

Speaking of hoax GTA 6 announcements, another one cropped up in July 2018, courtesy of GTA Online. If you logged on to Rockstar’s enduringly successful multiplayer mode around that time you may have seen a message that read “GTA VI Coming 2019.” This message only appears on the GTA Online platforms that are most prone to hackers, so perhaps a particularly mischievous sort has worked out how to post on Rockstar’s announcement system. Besides this, there’s very little GTA 6 news around.

Since there’s been no official announcements, the internet has plenty of, at this time, unfounded rumours and speculation about GTA 6.

The most recent GTA 6 rumour, as featured on Reddit, indicated that news was coming during SuperBowl LV. Last year’s big game took place in Florida and there were references to GTA Vice City all over the place, most notably some broadcasters showing off posters with GTA Vice City’s fonts and styling. Fox Sports also had lots of graphical overlays on its broadcast, most notably the mini map and the health indicators.

The SuperBowl in 2021 took place in Florida, with The Weeknd headlining the halftime show. Fans had speculated that this is important because The Weeknd has been linked to GTA 6 before in a music video. However, this is just a user comment that was included in the video via a billboard from “Son of Cita” that reads “Dis was on GTA 6 trailer”. When the SuperBowl halftime show happened, there was no reported link to GTA 6.

The previous GTA 6 rumour is from all the way back in 2018, and is a bit out there, so bear with us on this one. A supposedly leaked screenshot of the GTA 6 map made its way onto GTA forums and Reddit, but its apparent validity comes from the fact that it matches a similar leak from 2018. The new map shows a central American-inspired island in early stages of development, but looks roughly the same shape as the older leak.

Of course, this could all be rubbish and the fake could have been planned to match the older map. However, that’s not stopping fans from getting excited at a potential remake of the iconic Vice City.

Before that, the last GTA 6 rumour comes from the online CV for actor Jorge Consejo, who lists GTA 6 as a title where he plays a character listed as ‘The Mexican’ from 2018. Consejo has been addressing, and not addressing, the rumours on Twitter, simply stoking the fire with replies like “I can neither confirm nor deny this. But I did read your tweet ;)” and “While I read every message from you, please know that because of contract stipulations sometimes I’m unable to comment on certain projects,” – sounds promising.

Another GTA 6 rumour comes from Rockstar’s tax returns of all things. TaxWatchUK reports that Edinburgh-based Rockstar North latest published accounts reveal a huge increase in claims for video games tax relief. The report then speculates, “Studios are able to make interim claims for VGTR before a game is completed, and the huge claims being put in by Rockstar are likely related to the production costs of GTA VI. As VGTR is related to production spend, the large claim indicates the scale of Rockstar’s spending on games development.”

Of course, there’s been plenty of job ads over the years, too. Rockstar Leeds posted a job ad for an Environment Artist, whose job will specifically be ‘creating and texturing environment assets for the biggest and best open-world environments in the industry’. This could very well point to the development of GTA 6, although nothing more specific can be gleaned.

At Rockstar North, they’re looking for a Character Costume & Wardrobe Stylist who has “a deep appreciation of the history and cultural importance which clothing plays in society; from past eras to modern, global street styles and trends” – if this is for GTA 6, it looks like we could be going back in time, at least for some of the campaign.

Twitter user @Yan2295, a previous Rockstar insider known for leaking information in the past, has drawn attention to a number of potential hints circulating the internet.

Circulating on Reddit and Twitter is a photograph of a letter allegedly written by location manager Leah Sokolowsky, containing a request on behalf of the Rockstar Games development team to visit ‘primarily… interior spaces’ in Florida so that they can research and photograph these locations to inspire in-game locales. If legitimate, this fits nicely with the Project Americas theory touted by YouTube channel Inside Gaming, which purports we’ll be visiting Vice City (Rockstar’s Miami) and South America in GTA 6. Lending even more credence to the Vice City theory is the simple fact that we’re talking about GTA VI… VI-ce City? No? It works so well.

As for when we can expect more news about GTA 6, actor Steven Ogg, the voice of Trevor in GTA 5, mentioned at the Brasil Game Show that we can expect GTA 6 ‘soon’ and that ‘games take 7-8 years to make, do the math’. Ok, let’s do the math. GTA 5 was released in September 2013 making the anticipated GTA 6 release date… 2021? This seems unlikely at this point.

GTA 6 story

A GTA 6 story could take any shape. Across the Grand Theft Auto series, narratives have covered a broad spectrum of ideas and tones – from the cynical critique of capitalism portrayed in GTA 4, to the relatively light and humorous GTA 5.

We’re not aware of any specific GTA 6 story beats as yet. It remains to be seen if there will be multiple protagonists once again, but we would love to see GTA 6 herald the inclusion of the first female GTA protagonist. In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Dan Houser explained why a woman wasn’t playable in GTA V, and how the team could make it happen in the future.

“We didn’t really think about it this time [of GTA V]. That’s not to say that we couldn’t or we wouldn’t. This character set is just what came to us: it wasn’t, ‘we’ve got X and Y so we need Z’, we weren’t trying to do it off a checklist – I don’t think that will ever give you something that’s believable or engaging.

“In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course. We just haven’t found the right game for it yet, but it’s one of the things that we always think about. It didn’t feel natural for this game but definitely for the right game in the future – with the right themes, it could be fantastic.”

We certainly agree. If Rockstar could imbue a female protagonist with its typically anarchic sense of humour, she could be one of PC gaming’s greats. And, since we got a three-pronged set of protagonists last time – a first for the series – why can’t we have a little more variety in our lead characters for GTA 6? Who knows, they could even be on the side of the law this time, like these GTA V modders.

GTA 6 map

The rumour mill has been churning with talk of a London GTA 6 setting. But, while England’s big smoke is said to be the only non-US setting Rockstar would consider, Houser appeared to debunk this rumour in The Guardian’s interview with him. He said: “I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then. These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don’t know if it would be a GTA game.

“I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them – I just don’t think it would be a GTA necessarily.”

TechRadar, citing an unnamed insider source, asserts that Rockstar was considering Tokyo as a possible Grand Theft Auto setting around the time Vice City was in development. However, on top of the issues posed by setting the game outside of the US, the developer was also put off by the “problematic” road system. Rockstar already has a game set in Tokyo, of course – you can see more of it in the Midnight Club 2 video below.

Another persistent rumour is that the open-world game will not be restrained to a city, but would comprise the entirety of the US. Now, we don’t doubt that Rockstar has the ambition or the necessary dollars to make that happen, but it’d involve too much driving – and, therefore, not enough heisting – in our book.

There are multiple ways Rockstar could make this a reality for a GTA 6 map. First, GTA 6’s US could be a truncated version of the real-world country, as we found in The Crew 2’s gameplay. Or various cities in America could function as a quasi open world – like the connected, but separate playable environments in The Witcher 3, one of the best RPGs on PC.

However, rumour has it that GTA 6 will take place in two locations. First of which is Rockstar’s version of South Florida – Vice City, in other words. The bulk of the game is rumoured to return to the setting of the series’ 2002 classic, but it’s also claimed some missions will see you fly to an unknown part of South America. This information suggests that the GTA 6 map will be a departure from the GTA 5 one, which saw Blaine County Los Santos joined together without loading screens.

Just imagine escaping the police after a high-octane heist one moment, and taking an artistic selfie at the Grand Canyon the next? Whatever Rockstar chooses for the GTA 6 setting, this rumour is an enticing one.

Regardless of what GTA 6 setting is chosen, you can guarantee that it’ll showcase Rockstar’s irreverent and cutting sense of humour, populated with plenty of distractions to keep you from the game’s main missions.

So, what would we like to see from a GTA 6 setting? It’d be great to see GTA 6 take a trip to Nevada. Like the Fallout: New Vegas world, except with a little less nuclear annihilation… hopefully. In the style of The Hangover, it’d be huge fun to rampage through the casinos and strip clubs of Las Vegas. Just as long as we don’t have friends as needy as GTA 4’s Roman to babysit, too.

GTA 6 gameplay

If the rumour that a new game in the series could recreate the entirety of the US holds true, there will be a huge number of activities to choose from. But the surface area of a location is one thing, whether the GTA 6 gameplay is fun, is another.

Thankfully, then, Rockstar has a solid track record with delivering gameplay that keeps us coming back for more. If the side missions kept us from the main story after many hours into GTA 6’s predecessors, a gargantuan, full-sized US could keep us going forever.

What innovations could GTA 6 gameplay provide? Maybe we’ll see our new protagonist planning assassinations like we did heists in GTA V? Something like Rocksteady pioneered with Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, in which we channel our sleuthing abilities to catch our foes, ending with a classic Grand Theft Auto car chase?

In GTA V, the side activities ranged from daring bank jobs to wholesome rounds of golf and hunting down celebrities as paparazzi. The sheer popularity of meticulously planned co-op heists from GTA V surely means they’ll return to GTA 6 in some form, and we can’t wait to see what Rockstar conjures up.

Since we don’t know if the game even exists yet, there’s no GTA 6 trailer footage to show off. However, we do have 4K gameplay of GTA V, which is the closest you’re going to get for now. Thankfully, Rockstar pushes technological boundaries with every GTA title, so we can only imagine how GTA 6 will look.

New GTA in Development, Rockstar Reportedly Making Changes to Fix Crunch Culture

And how Red Dead 2 crunch talk may be improving how Rockstar works.

An anonymous source close to Rockstar Games has confirmed to IGN that the Red Dead Redemption 2 company is next working on a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, as first reported by Kotaku.

Of course, given that the next Grand Theft Auto is early in development, it remains to be seen how the later parts of development could affect these plans to curb crunch, the process by which developers work frequent overtime in order to hit certain release dates and milestones. According to the new report, Rockstar has attempted to root out the causes of widespread crunch reported at the studio, including changes in leadership throughout many of its offices, outside management training, and plans to improve technology pipelines and scheduling for production on the next game. And while there's still concern at the studio, according to the report, many anonymous devs speaking to Kotaku were cautiously optimistic about the future.

IGN has reached out to Rockstar for official comment on the alleged changes at the studio, as well as further comment on the next GTA, and will update this story should they respond.

Conversation around Rockstar and the effects of crunch ignited after Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who has since left the company, commented about working 100-hour weeks on Red Dead 2. Though Houser later clarified his statement was about his specific writing team, discussion around crunch at the studio surged. Rockstar employees were speaking openly about their experiences at the studio, while reported surfaced that, in response to all of the discussion, Rockstar explicitly told employees overtime was not mandated.

Crunch and its impact on developers has of course been a discussion before Red Dead 2's development, and one we've seen continue since, including a CD Projekt Red executive indicating crunch would be needed on Cyberpunk 2077. And recent reports suggested that The Last of Us Part 2's delay from February to May allegedly led to more sustained crunch, rather than alleviating it.

GTA 6 has not officially been announced, and though we've seen plenty of attempts to fool us into believing GTA 6 has been announced for previous years, Rockstar has remained quiet about what will follow Red Dead 2, as well as its continued work on Red Dead Online and GTA Online.

Outriders

What happens if you blend Doom and Mass Effect? Well, it seems to be Outriders, a brand new IP from People Can Fly (Gears Judgment / Bulletstorm), and published by Square Enix. It features dark, sinister alien forces against a humanity that's desperate to survive. But there's a twist. Humanity is trying to inhabit a new planet called Enoch after Earth is rendered unusual, but a strange energy storm they're calling The Anomaly has gifted them all with powerful abilities.

Oddworld: Soulstorm

Release date: April 6, 2021

Oddworld: Soulstorm, the latest adventure for our favorite Mudokon, Abe, is coming to PS5 (and PS4) as a free PS Plus game this April. Like the other games in the series, Abe is our accidental hero who needs to lead his fellow Mudokons to safety after he discovers a plan to eat them all. It's a 2.9D platformer, with puzzles to solve by commanding your troops. Plus this time, Abe can salvage, and craft a whole new arsenal to use and share. Of course, you can still take the pacifist route too if that's your jam.

Returnal

Set on a hostile planet where you appear to be caught in a constant cycle, Returnal is said to transform "roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter". With every death, the planet will change, so it looks like you'll have to keep adapting to your surroundings. In the recent trailer which debuted during the Future of Gaming showcase, we see a lone astronaut on an alien world. It has a very intense kind of mood to it, with some fast-paced combat and plenty of intrigue. The individual is clearly trying to keep their grip on reality and it certainly leaves us wanting to know more about this upcoming PS5 games.

Resident Evil 8: Village

Resident Evil 8 Village is officially on the way and it's set to come to the PS5 in 2021. The next entry in the Resident Evil franchise is one of the highly anticipated upcoming PS5 games and takes place a few years after Resident Evil 7, featuring Ethan and Mia. Only, another familiar is also back, and he appears to be causing a spot of trouble for Ethan. Chris Redfield enters the scene and is said to set off a chain of events that leads Ethan to a mysterious village desperate for answers. Oh, and it also appears to feature werewolves.

Deathloop

We got our first proper look at Deathloop gameplay during Sony's Future of Gaming show, and it looks like it's shaping up to deliver some assassinating action with Ground Hog Day vibes. From the developer behind the Dishonored series, Deathloop sees two rival assassins locked in a time loop, with eight targets to eliminate. Colt, one of the assassins, is hellbent on taking out the targets, while Juliana appears to want to protect them from harm. It's one of the upcoming PS5 games that's a timed exclusive, and will eventually launch on PC too.

Knockout City

Dodgebrawl anyone? Yeah, we hadn't heard of it either, but we're so in. Knockout City is a brand new multiple experience that takes the concept of dodgeball, let's you team up with friends, and take down rival Crews in battle. At its heart is the basic catching and throwing, but timing and trick shots really heighten the tactical nature of it. If you're not the one holding the ball, don't fret either as you can just become one instead. Yes, really. Add into that plenty of ways to modify your character's style and you've got the idea of what Knockout City will be.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is the PS5 port of the JRPG released last year. Like other upcoming PS5 games, this title will take advantage of the new console's improved specs and power to deliver enhanced visuals and performance. You'll also be able to experience a brand new episode featuring ninja Yuffie Kisaragi, who's mission is to infiltrate the Sinra Corporation. If you own Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4, you'll get the upgraded PS5 version for free, but you'll still need to pay for the new episode. If you got Final Fantasy 7 Remake via PS Plus in March, you will also need to pay for the PS5 upgrade too.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ever since the reboot of the first Ratchet & Clank game that launched on PS4 (and had an accompanying movie!) in 2016, fans have been clamoring for a brand new game in the franchise. And boy, have their dreams been answered by this gem appearing in the upcoming PS5 games line-up. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an all-new adventure following the dynamic duo through what seems to be multiple dimensions, with new tools in their arsenal. There's also a female Lombax who appears, although we don't know her name yet. Could we see another protagonist option, Assassin's Creed Syndicate-style?

Little Devil Inside

Little Devil Inside first began life on Kickstarter back in 2015. Fast forward five years later and we see a debut trailer during the PS5 reveal stream with the news that it will be a timed exclusive. As an RPG with survival elements, Little Devil inside is set in the "Victorian-like" era in a semi-open world. The trailer showed off a whole host of monsters and also gave us brief glimpses of some of the combat elements and features. It was easily one of the biggest surprises of the recent showcase.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Ember Lab studio founders and brothers Josh and Mike Grier introduced their upcoming game Kena: Bridge of Spirits coming to PS5 during Sony's showcase, and it looks absolutely magical. With its beautiful world complete with adorable little fuzzy creatures known as Rot who act as your spirit companions that can manipulate the environment, Kena: Bridge of Spirits instantly piqued our interest. It's described as a "story-driven action-adventure in a charming world rich with exploration and fast-paced combat", and will see you battling monsters as you try and bring peace to this spirit realm. Easily one of the GamesRadar team's top upcoming PS5 games.

Back 4 Blood

Back 4 Blood is Left 4 Dead 3 in all but name, and we're 100% here for it. Having spent some time with the alpha, we can assure Left 4 Dead fans that the same frantic team-focused gameplay, distinctive style, and loud personality are back in Back 4 Blood. Everything we've seen from Turtle Rock on Back 4 Blood is pure, nostalgia-inducing glee in the form of an upcoming next-gen co-op zombie bashing romp, and we absolutely can't wait to team up on PS5.

Stray

In this new adventure coming to the PS5 from BlueTwelve Studio, you play as a cat in a world filled with robots. As a cat exploring this strange world, you'll gain a unique perspective from the eyes of a feline who can sneak under cars, traverse over rooftops and go about unnoticed. Viv, the game and creative director at the studio, said, "we are inspired every day by Murtaugh and Riggs, our two cats. Most of the team are cat owners as well, giving us all a lot of helpful first-hand references. Cats are always so playful, cute, and lovingly annoying that it's an endless stream of gameplay ideas for us."

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo has officially been confirmed to be coming to the PS5 in 2021, and we also saw some gameplay footage showing off the first-person combat. Set in Tokyo, Japan, Tango Gameworks takes you to the city which has been overrun by paranormal threats. Strange occult events have caused devastation, and the vast majority of the city's population has mysteriously disappeared. After you gain supernatural abilities of your own, it's up to you to explore and fend off evil spirits. Said to take full advantage of the PS5's hardware, Ghostwire Tokyo is set to deliver an immersive, supernatural experience.
