Construction prep getting underway for Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games

It’s a typical workday at the future site of Canada Games Park at the southeastern corner of Brock University campus in Thorold, Ont.
In one section of the sprawling, brown, muddy patch of land, an excavator is clawing at the ground, pulling up material which is loaded onto waiting rock trucks. Nearby, two dozer operators are pushing dirt.
Trailers have been set up on-site as temporary offices. Utility and sewer installs are underway and curbs are being shaped for the roadways.
Eighteen months from now, the site will be ready to host events for the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games.
The park, at Sir Isaac Brock Boulevard and Merritville Highway, will eventually include a Sport and Abilities Centre, consisting of two ice pads, including one that will seat 1,200 spectators, a para-sport gymnasium, health and well-being facilities, a 200-metre indoor track for walking and running, and training facilities, six beach volleyball courts, a 400-metre outdoor track and field facility, and cycling pavilion.
A new Henley Rowing Centre is also scheduled to be built in Port Dalhousie that will include training facilities, a medical room and accessible changerooms. Details are still being worked out for that project.
“The project is currently on time,” says Doug Hamilton, chair of the Summer Games board of directors. “Much of the work currently is sitework preparation, foundations and footings. Steel will be arriving in April.”
Brampton-based Aquicon Construction has been awarded a $90-million contract to build the two projects. While Canada Games Park is underway, work on the Henley Rowing centre will start once the design is completed.
Time is of the essence for both projects as the venues must be completed in advance of the Games which are scheduled for Aug. 6 to 21, 2021.

The plan is to have all facilities required for the Games, namely the outdoor running track, beach volleyball courts and some of the interior of the Sport and Abilities Centre, ready in time for the start of competition. Some of the legacy projects, however, will be finished afterwards.
“All facilities that are required for the Games will be completed before the competition starts,” Hamilton explains. “But facilities or aspects of facilities that are not Games-time focused are what we call legacy-focused. Those projects have a perspective of leaving an infrastructure legacy for the community beyond the Games. So, as an example, the twin-pad ice box won’t be ready for any ice sports by Games time, but it will be ready to host lacrosse for the Games.”
Construction at the site began in December shortly after Aquicon, a family-owned company that was formed in 1986, was announced as the contractor for the projects.
Aquicon is no stranger to Niagara Region, as the company built the Gale Centre, a four-pad hockey facility in Niagara Falls, and the Vale Health and Wellness Centre in Port Colborne, a multi-use recreational facility that houses ice rinks, a fitness centre and pool.
The company was also responsible for the multi-million-dollar transformation of Niagara College’s Welland Campus, a massive construction project that significantly expanded the school’s programming, and in 2005 Aquicon completed construction of the $24-million MacBain Community Centre in Niagara Falls.
The Games project is creating local jobs as UEM, the project management firm, is based in Niagara Falls, and Aquicon president Daniel Aquino has committed to hiring local trades and is using many local subs. For example, Peter’s Construction Group is doing much of the gravel, paving and hardscape at the Games park.
The venture is a partnership between the Niagara Region, Brock University and the cities of Thorold and St. Catharines. The land, worth about $12 million, was part of the university’s in-kind donation to the Games.
Hamilton says the Henley Rowing Centre project, meanwhile, is currently undergoing a “value engineering exercise” to refine the project.
“The new Henley Rowing Centre has a sustainable design and is targeted to be an ultra-efficient, net-zero-energy facility. As a world-class rowing course, the facilities will be accessible, multi-purpose, training and event spaces.”
The Summer Games is expected to draw more than 5,000 athletes competing in 18 different sports, with competitions taking place across Niagara municipalities. The competition is expected to generate an economic benefit of $400 million in the Niagara Region and support more than 2,100 jobs during organization of the event.
The 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., resulted in a $92.4-million injection into the community, along with $110.3 million in overall economic activity for Alberta, and $19.6 million in visitor spending, according to a report prepared by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance.

Niagara region gets $29M from feds for 2021 Canada Summer Games

Funding will also help rehabilitate seven other sports venues
The 2021 Canada Games in the Niagara region is getting $29 million from the federal government to build two new sports facilities and fix up seven other sports venues.
Minister of infrastructure and communities François-Philippe Champagne announced the funding in Welland on Thursday. He was joined by several elected officials from the surrounding areas, including Liberal MPs, the mayors of Welland, St. Catharines, and Thorold, as well as the president and vice-chancellor of Brock University and the chairman of the 2021 Canada Games.
The Canada Games is the largest multi-sport event in the country. It is held every two years and switches between the winter and summer games.
The 2021 Canada Summer Games will be the first time where the host has been a region; all other games have been hosted by single municipalities. Canada Games says that the games will be hosted across all twelve Niagara Region municipalities.
It will also be the third time that the games have been hosted in Ontario.
The new sports facilities that will be built include the Canada Games Park in Thorold and a new Henley Rowing Centre in St. Catharines.
The Canada Games Park will include:
- Sports Abilities Centre.
- Athletics Facility.
- Beach Volleyball Centre.
- Outdoor Cycling Pavilion.
- Environment Sustainability Centre.
An above ground swimming pool will also be installed at Brock University and will be moved to Lincoln after the games end.
Other initiatives in St. Catharines include upgrades to Brock University's diving and rugby facilities, and rehabilitation of a baseball diamond at George Taylor Field.
Joining @FP_Champagne on stage for the 11 a.m. announcement
In a press release, Champagne said that "the new 2021 Canada Games facilities will leave a sporting legacy that will increase access to quality recreational infrastructure" since the facilities will be available for commmunity use after the games.
At the media event, Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the 2021 Canada Summer Games Host Society and Olympic medalist for rowing, said that this was the "final piece" and that the games were now fully funded.
He also added that construction will begin in a few weeks.
Some of the money will also be used to upgrade baseball and softball fields for residents of Grimsby, Niagara Falls, Wainfleet, Welland, and West Lincoln and to buy "new specialized sports equipment" that will be used during and after the games.
The $29 million will come from the community, culture and recreation infrastructure stream of the federal government's "Investing in Canada" infrastructure plan.
The release also said that Sport Canada will give $3 million. The Government of Ontario, host municipalities, and Brock University will cover the rest.

Niagara Falls
Our editors will review what you’ve submitted and determine whether to revise the article.
Niagara Falls, waterfall on the Niagara River in northeastern North America, one of the continent’s most famous spectacles. The falls lie on the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York state, U.S. For many decades the falls were an attraction for honeymooners and for such stunts as walking over the falls on a tightrope or going over them in a barrel. Increasingly, however, the appeal of the site has become its beauty and uniqueness as a physical phenomenon.

The falls are in two principal parts, separated by Goat Island. The larger division, adjoining the left, or Canadian, bank, is Horseshoe Falls; its height is 188 feet (57 metres), and the length of its curving crest line is about 2,200 feet (670 metres). The American Falls, adjoining the right bank, are 190 feet (58 metres) high and 1,060 feet (320 metres) across.

The formation of the Niagara gorge (downriver) and the maintenance of the falls as a cataract depend upon peculiar geologic conditions. The rock strata from the Silurian Period (about 444 to 419 million years ago) in the Niagara gorge are nearly horizontal, dipping southward only about 20 feet per mile (almost 4 metres per km). An upper layer of hard dolomite is underlain by softer layers of shale. Water exerts hydrostatic pressure and only slowly dissolves the dolomite after infiltrating its joints. Dolomite blocks fall away as water from above infiltrates and rapidly erodes the shale at the falls itself. The disposition of the rock strata provides the conditions for keeping the water constantly falling vertically from an overhanging ledge during a long period of recession (movement upstream) of the cataract. As blocks of dolomite are undercut, they fall off and are rapidly destroyed by the falling water, further facilitating the retreat of the falls and the maintenance of a vertical cataract.

The water flowing over the falls is free of sediment, and its clearness contributes to the beauty of the cataract. In recognition of the importance of the waterfall as a great natural spectacle, the province of Ontario and the state of New York retained or acquired title to the adjacent lands and converted them into public parks.

The grotto in this theme room resembles a mineral spring surrounded by rocks and plants. Perhaps it does so because it is rocks and greenery with the spa centering this natural setting. Steps, cut into the rock take you to the water’s edge and mirrored panels and greenery enhance the setting. You bathe in a garden of Eden. Garden furniture comforts you in a setting created with imported French murals depicting a garden of pastel flowers. If you look closely tiny insects are visible among the greenery. A brass bed, brass and glass tables, and mirrored doors add to the look, which continues into the bathroom. Here too the wall covering is imported and the garden is English this time.
Oriental Room
Through research and careful shopping the Oriental theme room is complete even to a golden crest on the door. A red double Jacuzzi tub is the color of good luck in the Oriental mystique and a tiny bonsai tree, and a tiny temple sealed in glass, adorn the tub surround. Mirrored doors on closets repeat the decor of the room which has paper patterned with peonies (the Oriental king of flowers representing wealth, honor, refinement and nobility), and plum trees, which represent brotherhood and cordial relationships. On elegant lacquered chests and tables geishas wander in gardens of exquisite flowers. Nesting cocktail tables have recessed scenes with good luck jade and ivory carvings. A focal point in this elegant room is a mirrored wall behind the huge bed and a screen which depicts the Tree of Life and the of legend, rising.
Midnight at the Oasis Room
A double Jacuzzi spa en suite is surrounded with palms, tropical plants and mirrored panels to provide a broad vista. A leopard sits quietly at the edge of the spa. The drapes are patterned with golden lions heads and soft palm fronds cover the walls. Shades are soft browns and gold. A huge bed is clothed with satin bed linen in leopard pattern, but the effect is soft, not busy.
