Theatre Calgary has pulled out all the stops and spared no expense or talent to create its most spectacular A Christmas Carol in 33 years.

Scott Reid’s sets are certainly a feast for the eyes beginning with the massive pieces representing buildings in Victorian England that open to reveal Scrooge’s bleak counting house or the humble Cratchit home. The real magic lies in the video wall at the back of the stage that can one moment reveal a city street and the next a countryside field.

The screen’s most jaw-dropping effect occurs when Scrooge (Stephen Hair) is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past (Jamie Tognazzini) who enters on a harness and alights on top of Scrooge’s cabinet. Her costume is all lights and glitter and hoofs and she carries a long staff. She commands Scrooge to take hold of the staff so that he can fly with her into his past.

Fly he does through the combined choreographed efforts of Tognazzini, the video wall and Hair. It’s like one of those Disney theme park rides as they create the illusion that the ghost and Scrooge are flying from London through space and time to the village where he was born.

Not to be outdone, Christmas Present (Marshall Vielle Natay’Ao’Tako) towers over the set, dwarfing Scrooge. His robe is a banquet of fruit and desserts and it hides the motorized cart that glides him about the stage. He adds some comic relief before the darkness of the Ghost of Christmas Future arrives.

Rather than an actor, the ghost of Christmas Future is a massive, cascading robe that fills the stage, enveloping actors who emerge to create short scenes.

When Marley’s ghost (Brian Jensen) is first revealed, he’s hiding in a closet suspended by his chains and emerges like a jack-in-the-box.

The party at the Fezziwig factory, where Scrooge as a young man (Devin MacKinnon) worked as an accountant, turns into a big, brash, joyous, Broadway-style production number with choreography by Jesse Robb. There’s some particularly fancy footwork from young dancer Jackson MacNeil.

None of these wonderful effects and frivolity would matter a wit if they didn’t have a strong script to hold it all together and that is what Geoffrey Simon Brown has provided in his adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved novella. The action moves swiftly and smoothly from scene to scene and Brown has made certain there are moments of pathos and introspection to balance the humour and spectacle.

The Ghost of Christmas Present, in particular, draws parallels between conditions in Victorian London and modern-day Calgary. It’s not a sledge hammer approach, but it would be difficult not to understand that Brown is trying to say poverty, want, greed, ignorance and avarice are still plagues that need to be eradicated.

Brown or directors Stafford Arima and Haysam Kadri have made certain not to overdo the powerful sentiment that Tiny Tim (Oliver Woodruff) provides in this story. They’ve taken their cue from Dickens himself who has Tim’s father, Bob Cratchit (Graham Percy), say his crippled son didn’t want or expect pity. The scenes in the Cratchit home pull at the heartstrings but Anna Cummer’s Mrs. Cratchit is a bit of a firebrand whose demeanour provides the essential comic balance.

This version of A Christmas Carol allows Hair more levity than he’s had in the past and because it is so infectious it allows the audience to laugh with Scrooge and not at him. We still love to hate him in the early scenes in the play but we delight in his journey to redemption. These moments of humour make the pain, fear and regret that Hair lets his Scrooge experience all the more touching.

A Christmas Carol features 24 actors, some playing multiple characters, plus Allison Lynch who not only composed the music score for the play but acts as the onstage fiddler/narrator. Arima and Kadri’s staging keeps everyone in almost constant motion so the stage is filled with activity and energy greatly enhanced by Deitra Kalyn’s lush period costumes and Michael Walton’s mood-setting lighting design.

A Christmas Carol runs in the Arts Commons’ Max Bell Theatre until Dec. 28 with a running time of 2 hours including a 15 minute intermission.

While the last few weeks have been a time of scurrying to buy Christmas presents and studying for last-minute tests for most students, La Cañada High School’s drama department has spent time putting together its third annual production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

The students’ hard work was depicted in the eight showings of the play, which took place between Dec. 6-15 in the La Cañada Playhouse.

The whole cast of the ASB production did a wonderful job — through use of accents and costumes — of taking the audience to 1840s London.

With his skill of making every emotion tangible to the audience, Jacob Walter admirably portrayed a Scrooge that paralleled Dickens’ character.

David Jin also brought talent to the stage by playing the roles of two completely different characters: the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Their inspiring acting can be traced not only to pure talent, but to hours of dedication and practice.

“We’ve been rehearsing ever since the school year began,” said LCHS student Alicia McConnell, who played the role of the laundress. “It gets to be a lot of work balancing schoolwork and rehearsal, but in the end it’s all worth it.”

Other students, including stage managers Bianca Saleebyan and Matthew Lee, worked behind the scenes to make sure the production ran smoothly. The cast and crew did such a great job that many in the audience returned for more.

“The play is wonderful, this is my third time seeing it,” said Elizabeth Devine, the mother of “Old Joe” (Austin Devine) in the play. “The sets are beautiful and the kids are doing great.”

Carpenter and set designer David Miller created outstanding backgrounds. Students contributed by helping to paint the sets.

Nearly every other aspect of the play was overseen by the director of the LCHS drama department, Justin Eick. As the producer/director of more than ten “A Christmas Carol” productions in past year, he led the La Cañada crew as director, sound designer, lighting designer and technical designer.

“In the past three years, this has been the most complete in terms of the show,” Eick said. “This year, the costumes, the lighting, the sound, the set, the phenomenal cast, everything was perfect.”

With his expertise, the high school students will be continuing to artfully entertain the community with productions of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” in March, followed shortly by “The Crucible” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”
