5. Intelligence
Are you surprised intelligence is back at number 5? There is a reason for it.
Given the huge amount of learning resources available to new players in today’s game, it is possible to become a good player without exceptional intelligence.

Before the 2017 World Series of Poker (WSOP) begins in just a few weeks, we wanted to take a look at the current rankings of the all-time top poker players in Canada.
While it’s an imperfect measure, we took a look at the top lifetime winnings in each province as well as all bracelet winners. As this data is all from Hendon Mob, the winnings are in US$.
As a whole, Canadians have won 54 WSOP bracelets, which is the most earned by any country outside of the obviously dominating United States. Almost half of those bracelets were won by players from Ontario (25) which stands out as Canada’s poker powerhouse, despite the province’s lack of live poker tournaments on its own soil.
Nationally, Daniel Negreanu is obviously the top player. He has won six WSOP bracelets and has more tournament winnings than any player in the world. Here’s how the top five in the country stack up:

Starting from the west coast, B.C. has 11 bracelets in their tally. Surprisingly, neither of the top two money earners have a bracelet. Shawn Buchanan has just under $6 million in winnings and Ami Barer has more than $3.3 million.
The province’s bracelet winners are Dan Idema who has three, Greg Mueller with two, and one each for Duncan Bell , Bob Chalmers, Robert Cheung , Zachary Fellows, Matt Jarvis , Rich Korbin, Calen McNeil , Ashkan Razavi , and Jason Warner .

These days, outside of the equally busy Playground Poker Club in Quebec, Alberta is Canada’s poker tournament capital. There are series running just about every month, and often more than one in a month. However, there is just one player who has had WSOP success. Randy Holland is an oldschool player who won two bracelets years ago. He was born in Alberta but resides in the States.
Holland also tops the lifetime earnings rankings, followed by the infamous Doug Lee to put just two players over the million-dollar mark. So far, local results have not translated into larger international success for Alberta players.

A WSOP bracelet has not yet made its way to Manitoba. Famous sports bettor Haralabos Voulgaris tops the earnings but is unlikely to add much to that tally. He hasn’t cashed a tournament in half a decade. The second-best player in the province, Patrick Serda, is someone who may very well add big numbers to his earnings, and maybe the province’s first bracelet. He has been breaking out this past year on the live circuit after establishing himself online.

There is no argument that Ontario is where the bulk of Canada’s talent comes from. Aside from the 25 bracelets awarded to players in the province, there are also 24 players who have more than $1 million in earnings.
The WSOP winners include Daniel Negreanu’s six bracelets, Kristen Bicknell ’s and Mark Radoja ’s two apiece, and one each for Timothy Adams , Levi Berger , Kirk Caldwell , Simon Charette , Aadam Daya , Lukasz Dumanski , Max Greenwood , Sam Greenwood , Mike Leah , Michael Malm , Nenad Medic , Scott Montgomery , Justin Oliver , Gavin Smith , and Amanda Thompson.
Ontario is also home to the only female bracelet winners in the country. Kristen Bicknell and Amanda Thompson have both won WSOP’s female-only event and Bicknell further established her credibility with a second bracelet last year which was in an open event.

The French-Canadian contingent are the other poker powerhouse in Canada. There have been 11 bracelets won by players from Quebec: three for Jonathan Duhamel , two for Andre Boyer , and one each for Philippe Boucher , Erik Cajelais , Jason Duval , Pascal Lefrancois , Miguel Proulx , and Charles Sylvestre .
Quebec is also home to Canada’s only WSOP Main Event winner. Jonathan Duhamel easily leads the winnings with his 2010 victory.

Nova Scotia has a disproportionate number of millionaires considering their small population. More players from this province have earned more than a million dollars than players from Alberta, despite the latter having more than four times the population.

Northwest Territories

While players have only had since 1999 when Nunavut was established to collect winnings, nobody from the largest and most northern territory seems to be travelling for poker. These are the only two people from Nunavut to cash a recorded tournament.

The travel ban between the United States and Canada is still in place, which is going to have a dramatic impact on the upcoming sport seasons as both the NBA and NHL will have to make some adjustments to accommodate franchises on both sides of the border.
An Enjoyable Activity At Home
Major sports leagues did get underway late in the summer, albeit with greatly modified rules and teams playing before empty stadiums. This gave fans something to enjoy, but many found a new activity in Canada to keep them occupied during the shutdown. That was online poker.

The programming language and application development makes it so that companies are going to use this digital currency to do business. Ethereum uses blockchain technology, which makes it a secure system to use, and the platform is open source, meaning that programmers can access the language to create applications that are easy to integrate.

Canada is one of the 12 nations outside the United States who can boast a WSOP Main Event champion. The Great White North’s victory at the poker’s most prestigious tournament was delivered by Jonathan Duhamel. He won the Main Event in 2010, topping a 7,319-player field for $8.944 million.

The Englishman has spent considerable time at the top of the Global Poker Index player rankings, and broke through for his first World Series of Poker bracelet this summer at the 2019 WSOP.

7. Fedor Holz (Germany): $32.6 million
25-year-old Fedor Holz is, indeed, one of the best poker players in history. During 2016 and 2017 seasons Holz had one of the sickest runs ever, winning $21 million during this short span. Most recently, Holz finished in 2 nd place behind Justin Bonomo in the 2018 WSOP $1 million Big One for One Drop, taking home the hefty $6 million consolation prize.
6. David Peters (US): $33.1 million
Always a fixture on the high roller circuit, as well a threat to win any tournament, David Peters has kept a steady climb up the all-time money list throughout the last few years.
Peters first cash came in 2007, when he was playing at much more modest stakes than the five, six and seven-figure plus buy-ins he plays now. He’s added two more seven-figure cashes to the resume in 2019 and could very well find himself at the top of this list at some point.
5. Erik Seidel (US): $35.7 million
The “old man” on this list, 58-year-old Erik Seidel is one of the original players from New York City’s Mayfair Clu0b, which includes the likes of Stu Ungar, Dan Harrington, and Howard Lederer. Seidel is an eight-time WSOP bracelet winner who has made an impressive 35 final tables and whopping 92 cashes, including his 2 nd -place finish in the 1988 Main Event behind Johnny Chan.
Seidel won his largest cash payout of almost $2.5 million at the 2011 Aussie Millions Poker Championship $250,000 Super High Roller NLHE event. In 2010, he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
4. Dan Smith (US): $36.7 million
Dan Smith isn’t a vocal player, but he has been slowly and surely moving up the All-Time Money List. 2012 marked a turning point in Smith’s career, beginning with a victory in the Aussie Millions Poker Championship $100,000 NHLE event for a very respectable $1.04 million. Smith also did particularly well at the 2012 EPT-8 in Monte Carlo, where he won three NLHE events over a span of four days.
Most recently, Smith placed 3 rd in the 2018 WSOP Big One for One Drop for $4 million and scored his biggest career cash with a 3rd place finish for $8,765,628 at the Triton Million.

Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu spent considerable time atop the all-time money list until the 2018 WSOP. But Negreanu’s career isn’t anything to scoff at. He has six WSOP bracelets, made 38 final tables, and has cashed 108 times, including as 11 th place finish at both the 2001 and 2015 WSOP Main Events. Negreanu was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2014.
Negreanu’s uncanny ability to read his opponents with incredible accuracy has undoubtedly contributed to his impressive success and well-deserved place among the best poker players of all time.
2. Justin Bonomo (US): $45 million
Justin Bonomo took over the top spot with his win in the 2018 WSOP $1 million Big One for One Drop. The $10 million prize swiftly propelled him to #1 on the All Time Money List. Now at #2, the 32-year-old Bonomo had a crazy run in 2018, amassing wins seemingly wherever he played. This three-time WSOP bracelet winner managed an impressive ten wins in various high-roller events across the world that year, including the May Aria Super High Roller Bowl $300,000 NLHE event where he won $5 million and the Macau Super High Roller Bowl $HK 3 million NLHE event where he pocketed another $4.8 million (HK $37.8 million). Bonomo certainly shows no signs of slowing down.

Bryn Kenney’s incredible 2019 run has vaulted him to the top of this list, with his biggest career cash coming in August at the Triton Million. Kenney finished 3rd in that event for $20,563,324.
Kenney’s first live tournament cash was in 2007. Since then he has steadily added to his impressive winnings. Kenney won a WSOP bracelet in 2014 at the $1,500 10-Game Mix 6-Handed event, and, in total, he has made seven final WSOP tables and cashed 32 times, including a 28 th place in the 2010 Main Event. His largest single cash of nearly $2 million came back in April 2017, at the PokerStars Championship €100,000 NLHE Super High Roller 8-Max in Barcelona. Since then, Kenney has had many top-five finishes across the globe.
