No Caroline Flack, no Iain Stirling, no cries of “crack on”—and yet, the American version of Love Island, which debuted on CBS Tuesday night, was a charmer in its first episode. The reality-competition dating series, an adaptation of the British phenomenon, neatly applied the original show’s formula, this time to a breathtaking villa in Fiji instead of Majorca. If anything, it proved that this franchise’s first-episode formula—lining up all the female contestants and having them step forward for the male contestants they find attractive, an often cringeworthy, drama-inducing ritual—makes for instantly juicy reality television, by way of schadenfreude. It’s hard to mess that up. The question now is: Will that charm last?

For the most part, the American version of the show hewed closely to the original show’s setup. Contestants instantly paired off, only to get surprised by a secret new contestant—Kyra, a musician from Harlem—who had to steal one of the other contestants away, instantly generating a dramatic cliff-hanger. There were a few obvious twists, though. Instead of Flack, the American version of the show is hosted by actress and former Vine star Arielle Vandenberg, who’s much more of a jokester than her authoritative British counterpart. Instead of Stirling, the show is narrated by Matthew Hoffman, who attempts to speak with the same bouncy cadence as Stirling—but hasn’t yet captured the Scot’s snarky energy. He’ll have about 20 more episodes to try, though, considering the American version will air five days a week from now until its August 7 finale.

Other elements from the British version also managed to squeeze their way in, including the phrases that pop up again and again on the show: Contestants were wary of stepping on anyone’s toes, pulled people away for chats, and asked where one another’s head was at. And thankfully they still shouted about getting texts.

But there were also some distinctly American features to this take on the show, which is to say contestants were already way more boisterous than their British counterparts. Least subtle? A cowboy contestant named Weston from Dallas, Texas, who did his introductory video in a cowboy hat and boots and spent his first morning in the villa wearing billowy American flag pants. ‘Murica. You knew the producers had to do this.

Most of the contestants were from big cities, like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami, and had a welcome range of careers, from modeling (classic) to real estate to grocery store clerking. Without spoiling anything, the American contestants also sidestepped the racist pitfalls that have stricken Love Island premiere episodes in the U.K., which was an immense relief.

Like the British show, there are no obvious villains this season (yet), and the producer’s hand feels deft(ish) rather than heavy, as on competing shows like The Bachelorette. But it’s still unclear whether the first episode of Love Island USA will attract viewers who don’t already care about the original British version—and whether the show can manage to hold on to fans of the British version, who are already tasked with watching a million episodes of that show’s current fifth season, airing now in the U.K. The debut episode of USA nimbly used the original’s formula while also gently coaxing newbies into the fold—but the second episode, airing tonight, will truly prove whether there are cracks in the copycat mold.

Before anyone assumes that I fled the US due to the political strife that's made headlines in recent years, I've been gone for a decade.

I left the US for love in 2008. Initially, my plan was to stay in Canada for a year or two, but the longer I stayed, the deeper my roots here grew, and the more the US felt like a place to which I can never return.

The politics are quieter in Canada

For the most part, in Canada, I can engage in political discussion with people holding opposing viewpoints without it turning into a character assassination of ourselves or politicians.

The pre-election campaign cycles are much shorter than they are in the US, and there are five active political parties. Politics are still politics, but most of the time, I don't think they're incredibly sensational here.

Canada's borders seem more open to me

As the world is faced with a migrant crisis, it seems to me that Canada is committed to opening its doors.

Rather than just providing charity for refugees and immigrants, Canada's goal is to solve labor shortages and bolster the population to power the economy for years to come.

As an immigrant, being given the chance to have a positive economic impact and contribute to a thriving society is much appreciated.

They have a cross-country train

Like in the United States, train travel is expensive here. But both the Trans-Canada Railway and VIA Rail offer options to take you from coast to coast, giving people a way to see a large swath of the country. This one's on my bucket list.

Canada has universal healthcare

Contrary to popular rhetoric, healthcare in Canada is not free — it's funded through a combination of personal and corporate taxation.

Canada continues to update its gun regulations, too. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a ban on 1,500 kinds of assault-style weapons, making it illegal to sell, import, transport, or use them.
