Welcome to our feng shui tips for beginners! If you’re new to feng shui, here’s the guide for you! In this post we’ll review feng shui basics, plus easy tips that you can implement in your home right away.

Five Elements

In feng shui, we use the five element system, which comes from Taoist philosophy. This system looks at the cycles of nature and how they work together to be in balance. The five elements are earth, metal, water, wood, and fire. Each element is associated with certain qualities, as well as colors and shapes that can be used as design elements if you’d like to enhance those qualities in your home and life.

Earth

Earth is related to self care, boundaries, and nourishment. It’s connected to earthy colors like yellow, orange, and brown, as well as square shapes and heavy objects.

Metal has the qualities of joy, beauty, and precision. White, gray, and metallic colors, as well as circular shapes, represent metal.

In order to place your bed, desk, or stove in command, find a location in the room where the following is true: when you’re sitting at your desk, lying in bed, or cooking, you can see the door without being directly in line with it. The idea behind this position is that you have a good view of anyone or anything that could be coming in through the door, which helps you feel more at ease on a subconscious level. It also means that you are more aware of potential opportunities that might be coming towards you.

Room by Room Tips

Entry

The entry, called the mouth of qi, is where energy enters your space. It is also what people see from outside your home, so it represents your face to the world. Make sure to keep this area clean and free of clutter, so qi can flow through easily. It’s also important that your front door is easy to find. Is it clearly labeled and free of obstructions? Your friends, as well as delivery people, should be able to find and access it easily.

It’s also a good idea to keep this area clean. Sweep your entry regularly, and remember to wash your door as well. You may also want to add a light fixture to keep this area bright and introduce the fire element.

Living Room

Living rooms are places to gather with family and friends, so they should feel cozy and welcoming. Make sure you have comfortable seating—enough for everyone who lives in the home, plus a few extra seats for guests. To encourage connection and conversation, face chairs and sofas towards each other. Try to avoid having the backs of chairs facing the door as much as possible.

Healthy green plants can also be a great addition to the living room, as they add vital life force energy as well as the wood element, which represents kindness and compassion.

Kitchen

The kitchen is an important area of the home because it represents how we nourish ourselves. One way to improve your kitchen feng shui is to make sure your refrigerator is clean and tidy. Are there any items in the back of the fridge that are expired? Clear out anything that’s no longer useful to you and compost it. Then, wipe down the inside with the intention of creating a space where you can nourish yourself with healthy food.

Bathroom

Because bathrooms have a lot of drains, they can be a source of downward and depleting energy. To minimize this, it’s a good idea to keep the bathroom door and toilet seat closed as much as possible. Since water represents the flow of wealth and money in feng shui, this can help to prevent money from flowing away from you.

Bedroom

Your bed and bedroom represent you, so this is a really important area to look at in feng shui, and a great place to start. First, make sure your bed is in the commanding position. Next, check under the bed. It’s not ideal to use this area as storage, since you spend a lot of passive time resting and sleeping here, so anything underneath you affects you energetically. If you need to store things under your bed for space reasons, make sure you only have soft, bed-related items like sheets and blankets.

You can also add the earth element for support and nourishment; a great way to do this is with a square earth-colored rug under your bed.

Feng Shui Tips to Bring in Money Fast

One of the questions I get asked most often is a variation of “Can you give me a remedy to bring in money… fast?”

Pick and choose from this list, or use them all!

Declutter:
I mean it. You’ll hear me say it over and over, but it works. By opening your space to allow for more and better things to arrive, your life will shift. Be mindful of not allowing decluttered spaces to become a vacuum of items and junk just falling into place.

Allow for more and better!

Get a wallet you love that is easy to use:

I bought myself a wallet for my birthday, and it was so pretty when it showed up, but the workmanship was not all that good, so it wore out super quickly. Every time I picked up, tried to use (emphasis on tried), or put away my wallet, somewhere in my mind I was agitated that the quality wasn’t better, and that it wasn’t working. After the company replaced my wallet 3 times

in 6 months, they pulled the product because they were replacing so many because surprise the wallet wasn’t well made.

If you are in the same situation, in any manner, ditch your crap wallet.

Find one you love. I found an Italian Leather wallet that was perfect for me. It zips on two sides and there is room for my iPhone inside. I often carry just my clutch/wallet rather than a whole purse, so I need something more than say, a money clip. You want a feeling of love, ease, and abundance every time you use your wallet. Just don’t buy a wallet so expensive that you have no money left to put in it, and remember to keep your wallet closed. Constantly leaving your wallet open is like giving your money permission to just leave.

$108 in wallet:

The number 9 is considered highly auspicious. 108 is sacred for a number of reasons, including that it is the natural division of circles, and it is a multiple of the number 9. You can check out more reasons here but, the tip here is to keep $108 dollars in a red envelope in your wallet to draw in more abundance.

Mountain of wealth:
This tip comes directly from my friend and mentor, Tanya Janke at Feng Shui for the Om. Tanya is an amazing Feng Shui Practicioner and Designer in Colorado, plus she is the Membership Director for the International Feng Shui Guild. She gets all my love and all my hugs.

Take 8 river rocks and paint them gold. Stack them in a mountain by your front door. Tanya suggests placing them to the right of the door, as you are facing the door. I have used this cure a number of times to great success. The day after I placed this cure at my own house the first time, I had $5,800 deposit into my account from a new client account that I didn’t realize was going to accept my contract.

Tanya used spray paint and got a very solid gold look. I used outdoor acrylics, squirted into a plastic bag, and then pressed them onto the rocks. I got a very natural look using this method. Use either, depending on how you want your mountain of wealth to look. I also, on occasion, add a layer of silver paint marbled in and get a really cool mottled stone look.

I sweep around my mountain about once a week, and clean and re-stack the rocks if needed.

Abundance bowl (In the Southeast if possible):

Abundance bowls are one of my favorite tips. You can use any type of dish or bowl. White, silver, and gold dishes or bowls are best. Things to include are paper money, coins, gold ingots, iron pyrite, 8 pieces of citrine, 8 pieces of aventurine, 8 mini riverstones painted gold using the same method as the Mountain of Wealth cure.

I also have a maneki-neko cat in my abundance bowl. These beckoning cats are often seen in Chinese or Japanese restaurants. The left paw raised attracts money, the right paw raised is for protection. Both hands raised can be used to draw in and keep money protected.

Make sure to freshen your bowl by adding new money or pieces on occasion.

Green Flowers or live plants (In the Southeast if possible):
Any life in the Southeast Abundance area of your home is highly valuable. Choose plants you love and will tend to. Make sure they are watered and healthy, and they will provide you with fresh oxygen, removal of toxins, and a happy feeling when you see them.

Write out your intention in a red envelope:

Write out your goal and intention. Write it down every week. I see this repeated over and over. People simply do not use this tool enough. One of my business mentors suggests writing out the goal on a post-it note, example: “Book 5 consults this week.” and keep that note visible everytime you work for the whole week. Celebrate when you achieve your intention.

To amplify your intention, Place your intention in your daily journal or notebook where you will see it daily. You can also keep a silver envelope or box in the northwestern part of your house or office with intentions, wish lists, and thank you (in advance) notes.

Say Thanks!

Show gratitude for all of your blessings! Some people like to have their phone notifications make a cha-ching sound every time they get a Paypal notifications. Others take a moment to say “Thank you. More of this please.”

There are also symbolic things which can block our flow. For instance, a toilet seat lid kept open can signify money being flushed away from you. Dead plants can stagnate Ch’i, therefore stagnating your progress.

Sometimes a negative energy can come from an invisible source, such as bad vibes from a former tenant, or electrical vibrations from a power company. For each “negative” energy, Feng Shui has a cure, or a solution.

Feng Shui actually isn’t that hard to practice. The more you do it, the better you get. You learn to develop a sense of visible and invisible energies which have an effect on you.

Try to learn as much as you can, because it will help you apply Feng Shui in the most effective way. (some good book suggestions at the end of this article). In your studies, you’ll find there are two types (or schools) of Feng Shui: Compass and Form.

This article is based mainly on Form School, and will touch on some of the basics of floorplans and eliminating negative energies. You don’t have to be a Feng Shui expert to use the techniques, but you should follow some basic guidelines.

Feng Shui uses an eight-sided pattern or mandela called a Ba-Gua (translation: 8 symbols that hang up there). Each section represents a certain area of your life, such as career, benefactors, children, money, marriage, etc.

By overlaying the pattern to the floorplan of your home, you can identify the sections affecting the different areas of your life. (When applying the Ba-Gua symbol to the layout of your home, the front door is always considered the main entrance, even if you don’t use it).

If the garage is attached to the home, you need to include it in the layout. Some homes have extensions or missing sections when putting the Ba-Gua over the layout.

Feng Shui has cures which can re-energize or enhance these sections. Each side of the Ba-Gua also represents a different element (water, earth, etc.), as well as color, and these are things which we can keep in mind when decorating our home.

Once any Sha has been identified, you can apply feng shui remedies and cures which will eliminate negative energy flow. Clean out the clutter, throw out junk, get rid of stuff you’re not using, fix broken windows, etc.

For things such as exposed beams, placement of furniture or appliances which can’t be moved, use an appropriate Feng Shui cure to restore and energize Ch’i.

These are called the 9 minor additions:

For instance, if your bed is under a window and you can’t move it, hang a faceted crystal ball 9 units (inches, cm, etc) from the ceiling in front of the window. What about exposed beams?

A Chinese bamboo flute hung on a beam transforms negative energy into positive. You can use the 9 minor additions to fix negative Feng Shui, energize certain sections of your house, and improve the flow of Ch’i.

The Three Secrets

Once you put your cures or solutions into place, they need to be reinforced by the Three Secrets, which is using the body, speech and mind while putting the cure in place.

For instance, after hanging a crystal or mirror, you could use your mind by visualizing a clear picture of the improvement you’d like to occur. While doing this, use your body by holding your hands together in a prayer position.

And use your speech by chanting a prayer, affirmation or mantra nine times. (the number 9 is important in Feng Shui).

The Master Thomas Lin-Yun believes that by placing a Feng Shui cure in an area, you improve the area by 10%. But when it is reinforced with the Three Secrets, it is reinforced 120%.

Feng Shui for the Main Entrance & Other Areas

The main entrance is an important area, and should be kept free of clutter and blockages. For instance, if there is a wall which blocks the rest of the house from view as you enter your home, this can block the flow of Ch’i, creating obstacles. Stand at your doorway, facing the interior.

How does it feel? Are there obstructions? Is there a stairway or column? Is there anything pointed facing the door (such as a desk or wall on an angle). Move what you can, and soften the unmovable aggressive corners with plants or fabric hangings.

Or you can put up a cool folding screen…fold it into a cup shape so that the corners will not create negative energy. The front part of the Ba-Gua (therefore, the front part of your home) is associated with water.

In 2021 (chinese year of the metal Ox) ,hanging pictures of water, such as the beach, lakes, rivers, helps honor this element.

A running fountain or an aquarium in the front section of your home also helps Ch’i flow wonderfully. By hanging a bamboo flute over the front door on the inside, it will bring blessings to you & your guests each time you enter or leave your home.

When discovering which area of the home affects the different types of activities of our lives, we can do things which enhance and honor these areas.

Learn each section, along with the color and element associated with it. For instance, for a woman who is having trouble getting pregnant, first she would locate which area of her home represented children.

Then she could place white flowers in that room (being careful to remove all dead leaves and blossoms), hang a Feng Shui crystal, bring in metal wind chimes or add more light into that area.

Cleaning out clutter, dusty items, and broken things from this room would be a great start in restoring more harmony, making it easier to conceive.

The outside of the home is also very important to consider. Homes which are on a bay are said to drain the energy of the occupants. Homes at the end of a dead-end street or cul-de-sac can affect your abundance, financially, physically and spiritually.

Dry plants or dead trees on your property are bad for health. When your home faces a T-intersection or a cemetery, it can block Ch’i. Many times, just the simple placement of an 8-sided mirror on the exterior of your house can bring great improvement.

Feng Shui is a sacred philosophy, and should be practiced in a respectful way. If you are going to use its methods, be serious about it, rather than taking a light-hearted, humorous approach.

The intention you put behind your actions is very important, so use a very positive and hopeful energy as you apply Feng Shui cures.
