Each game is unique and carefully crafted to give players the most entertainment possible. If you look at what we have done so far, you will find a wide variety in choice and concepts, but all with that Play’n GO energy.”
Additional Features:

The reels will then become wild. A sword attack is another option and this time, the first reel will be duplicated two to four times. A net attack can also take place which sees a gladiator stick and a respin awarded.
Joining Inferno Star:
The latest release joins another new title by the supplier, Inferno Star. Announced back in May, the slot game is an engaging new title taking place on a 5×3 grid. It offers a re-spin feature as well as quality visuals.
Players can now enjoy Inferno Star, Game of Gladiators and the many other online slot game titles from this leading developer.

A Potential Scenario
You’re almost out of money. Two more days and you will no longer be able to pay your staff or gladiators. The fight scheduled today will draw exceptionally massive crowds, meaning the fight purse will be bountiful and the opportunity to place a large volume of bets will be high. One problem though: your top fighter is fatigued from his last fight and has a nagging shoulder strain. Plus he has a history of concussions, so it’s fair to say he will not be at full strength if you put him in the arena. But he’s the best you’ve got. The rest of your gladiators are rookies yet; still working with your trainers and far too inexperienced to send into the crucible just yet.
The next fight is a week away and poorly hyped. You cannot wait that long.
If you were of an evil disposition, you could execute your top fighter instead and seize his life savings; with the fight purses you have shared with him through his career, he has amassed a lot of gold. It could keep you going for a month or two - maybe more. Something to consider.
Or if you find that distasteful, you could go to the money lenders instead. But their interest rates have been high these last few days: 30% or more. You could finance present operations with that – but you would suffer in the longer term.
So maybe you should send your top fighter into the arena. He is bruised up and fatigued – but he also is ranked 3rd overall by the so-called experts and pundits of Leptis Magnus, the current city you reside in. You know he is one of the best and might still have a good chance at pulling out a win.
Or he could lose his life.
What Is It?
Age of Gladiators is a single-player strategy/business management sim set at the height of the bloody gladiatorial games in ancient Rome.
Hire scouts to scour the provinces for potential prospects – once you have recruited your gladiators, you will need to manage their morale and personality while equipping them for battle in the arenas. Recruit support staff, upgrade your stables, partake in side missions, and manage the wealth and reputation of your business as it grows each day.
As your fighters win battles and increase in level, it will be up to you to decide how to focus their abilities by spending attribute and expertise points. Compete, trade, and interact with other in-game bosses as you work your way up from the starting provinces in Africa to the grand coliseum of Rome herself!

Oh, Canada: The best video game companies to know about

Video gaming is a major contributor to the Canadian economy, with several of the world's biggest publishers keeping studios in the country. There are over 470 video game companies currently active in Canada, generating over 35,000 jobs for the economy. The industry adds $3 billion to Canada's GDP, and almost 90% of that is from exporting the games around the world.
Canada is responsible for creating some of the world's most beloved games, and we've collected a list of some of the biggest and best.
Beenox
Beenox is a subsidiary of Activision and is largely responsible for Skylanders. The studio is based in Quebec and employs over 300 people. The company developed Skylanders Trap Team, Swap Force, and Skylanders Super Chargers. They also worked on games under the Spiderman license and were also responsible for porting Call of Duty: Black Ops III to Xbox 360 and PS3. Considering Activision is abandoning past-gen consoles, it makes me wonder if Beenox could be summoned to work on the core franchise in the future.
Behaviour Interactive
Behaviour Interactive has enjoyed an incredibly long history developing licensed titles, based on all sorts of franchises, mostly aimed at younger audiences. The studio produced the ill-fated Xbox 360 game WET, which was poorly received by gamers and critics alike. However, the studio struck gold when it partnered with Bethesda to develop Fallout Shelter, which is now one of the most played titles on Android and iOS. Fallout Shelter lands on PC in July 2016 as well.
Behaviour Interactive is now working on Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade, which is a free to play MMO shooter available now on Steam, with a PS4 and Xbox One version planned. The company recently released Dead by Daylight, which is a well-received 4v1 survival horror title for PC.
The company is based out of Montreal and employs around 375 people.

BioWare
Here's a company that needs no introduction. BioWare was founded in Alberta, and employs over 800 people. The company is also responsible for some of the most beloved RPGs ever made: Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, and what is arguably the best Star Wars game ever made, Knights of the Old Republic.
BioWare became a subsidiary of Electronic Arts back in 2007 and has enjoyed a solid run of AAA games since, the latest being Dragon Age: Inquisition. BioWare is currently working on the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, another unannounced Star Wars game, and the next instalment in the Mass Effect series, Andromeda.
Capcom Vancouver
Capcom is another company that needs no introduction. The Japanese publisher is one of the most legendary staples in the industry we have, right up there with the best for brand recognition. Capcom Vancouver employs around 170 people, and as the name suggests, they're based on the west coast. The company's biggest work by far is in the Dead Rising franchise. Capcom Vancouver built Dead Rising 2, 3, and recently announced Dead Rising 4 as a Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive.

Capybara Games
A personal favorite, Capybara Games is a small but prominent indie outlet based in Toronto. The company worked its way up from mobile phone games, releasing Super Time Force on Xbox One and PC back in 2014. The hilarious and retro time-warping 2D shooter won almost unanimous praise, and the studio now seems to be a staple fixture in ID@Xbox showcases. The company is now working on Below, an old school Zelda-inspired roguelike, with procedurally generated dungeons and charming graphics. Keep your eyes on this one.
EA in Canada
EA has an incredibly large operation in Canada. It's biggest and oldest studio is based in Burnaby, and employs over 1000 people, housing one of the world's largest QA testing facilities. EA also has two studios based in Montreal, one of which is led by Jade Raymond of Assassin's Creed fame, tasked with developing AAA Star Wars titles.
HB Studios
HB Studios is based in Nova Scotia, and the 80-strong team is well known for their contributions to sports titles. HB Studios has contributed to EA's Madden games, NHL, FIFA and even Activision's Guitar Hero series. Recently, the studio has worked with other publishers on sports titles like The Golf Club, Rugby 15, and the team is currently building an ambitious snowboarding title named Infinite Air for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Hinterland Games
Hinterland Games is a Vancouver-based indie developer established in 2012. The studio has thus far released only one game, The Long Dark, which is a survival simulator set in the unforgiving Canadian wilderness. The studio received funding from the Canada Media Fund and Kickstarter to build The Long Dark, which has enjoyed incredible success on both Xbox One and Steam. Hinterland Games is one to watch.
Klei Entertainment
Klei Entertainment is an indie studio based in Vancouver and is notable for the side-scrolling beat 'em up titled Shank, previously launched on Xbox 360. On current-gen, the company launched a Tim Burton-inspired survival roguelike called Don't Starve, which was well received.
Rockstar Toronto
Rockstar is another company that needs little introduction. The outlet is responsible for one of the most popular franchises of all time: Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar Toronto was a major contributor to Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold a thoroughly insane 65 million copies. Rockstar Toronto absorbed another Canadian Rockstar outlet, Rockstar Vancouver, back in 2012. Rockstar Toronto worked on the Max Payne console ports of yesteryear, in addition to the more recent Max Payne 3. It's unknown what the studio is working on at present, but we suspect it might be Red Dead-related.

Radical Entertainment
Radical Entertainment is the oldest studio in Vancouver, founded all the way back in 1991. The company has worked on games all the way from the NES era but is perhaps best known in recent times for the Prototype open-world action adventure games. Following Prototype 2's commercial failure, parent company Activision struck the studio with layoffs and canceled all of their in-house projects. Radical Entertainment is currently working in partnership with another Activision subsidiary on an "incredible" project, so stay tuned!
Relic Entertainment
Relic Entertainment is yet another Vancouver-based developer and a subsidiary of Sega. Relic previously existed under the now defunct THQ, having been founded in 1997. Relic is famed for its real-time strategy expertise, with the Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War franchises under its belt. The company is currently working on Dawn of War III for Windows PC.

The Coalition
The Coalition is part of Microsoft Studios and is the sole guardian of the Gears of War franchise. The studio was formerly known as Microsoft Vancouver, before being rebranded as Black Tusk Studios. Black Tusk was developing a franchise to "rival Halo," and made its debut with a pre-rendered teaser trailer for that game. Microsoft purchased the rights to Gears of War from Epic Games soon after, and Black Tusk was repurposed with stewardship over what is arguably Microsoft's third most important IP behind Minecraft and Halo. The company has shipped Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, and has Gears of War 4 prepped to launch on October 11th, 2016.
Ubisoft in Canada
Ubisoft, like EA, has a very significant presence in Canada. The blockbuster publisher has several studios across Canada, in Quebec, Halifax, and Toronto, the largest of which is based in Montreal. Ubisoft Montreal is, in fact, one of the biggest studios in the world, employing over 2500 people. All of Ubisoft's biggest franchises, from Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, and Far Cry saw development in Canada, and the company shows no sign of slowing down. Unfortunately, Ubisoft is currently facing a hostile takeover from Vivendi Entertainment. We can only hope their operations won't be impacted.
Oh Canada!
The video game industry in Canada looks set to grow even further in the coming years, as more and more studios seek to take advantage of Canada's generous media tax breaks.
What's your favorite Canadian developer? Are there some you think we should include on this list? Let us know in the comments!

Comparing Dell's premium XPS 15 to the Inspiron 15 7000
The Dell XPS 15 (9500) is an extraordinary 15-inch Ultrabook, but its price might be too high for a lot of people. The budget Inspiron 15 7000 (7501) is a great alternative, but how does it compare?

6e. Gladiators, Chariots, and the Roman Games
Two men ready their weapons. An excited crowd of Romans cheer loudly in anticipation. Both combatants realize full well that this day might be their last. They are gladiators, men who fight to the death for the enjoyment of others.
As the two gladiators circle each other, each knows that his objective is to maim or trap his opponent rather than to kill him quickly. What's more, the fight must last long enough to please the crowd.
The gladiators jab swords and swing maces. They sweat in the hot sun. Sand and dirt fly. Suddenly, one gladiator traps the other with a net and poises to kill him with a three-pronged trident. The victor waits for a sign from the crowd. If the losing gladiator has put up a good fight, the crowd might choose to spare his life — and the vanquished gladiator will live to fight another day. But if the crowd is dissatisfied with the losing fighter — as was usually the case — its dissatisfaction meant slaughter.
In ancient Rome, death had become a form of entertainment.

Let the Games Begin

Before fighting, gladiators had to swear the following oath: "I will endure to be burned, to be bound, to be beaten, and to be killed by the sword."
The Etruscans of northern Italy originally held public games, ( ludi ), which featured such events as gladiator battles and chariot races, as a sacrifice to the gods.
The Romans continued the practice, holding games roughly 10 to 12 times in an average year. Paid for by the emperor, the games were used to keep the poor and unemployed entertained and occupied. The emperor hoped to distract the poor from their poverty in the hopes that they would not revolt.
Over time, the games became more spectacular and elaborate as emperors felt compelled to outdo the previous year's competitons. The games involved more participants, occurred more frequently, and became more expensive and more outlandish.
The Coliseum
In Rome, the gladiatorial contests were held in the Coliseum, a huge stadium that first opened in 80 C.E. Located in the middle of the city, the Coliseum was circular in shape with three levels of arches around the outside. In height, the Coliseum was as tall as a modern 12-story building; it held 50,000 spectators.
Like many modern professional sports stadiums, the Coliseum had box seats for the wealthy and powerful. The upper level was reserved for the commoners. Under the floor of the Coliseum was a labyrinth of rooms, hallways, and cages where weapons were stored and animals and gladiators waited for their turn to perform.
The Coliseum was also watertight and could be flooded to hold naval battles. Special drains allowed water to be pumped in and released. But, naval battles were rarely held there because the water caused serious damage to the basic structure of the Coliseum.

The Coliseum wasn't the only amphitheater in ancient Rome; there were several scattered throughout the entire empire. The amphitheater pictured above is in Tunisia, Africa.
The gladiators themselves were usually slaves, criminals, or prisoners of war. Occasionally, the gladiators were able to fight for their freedom. Criminals who were sentenced to death were sometimes thrown into the arena unarmed to serve their sentence. Some people, including women, actually volunteered to be gladiators.
They were willing to risk death for the possibility of fame and glory. Many gladiators went to special schools that trained them how to fight. A few gladiators boxed. They used metal gloves to increase cutting and bleeding.
Some gladiatorial contests included animals such as bears, rhinos, tigers, elephants, and giraffes. Most often, hungry animals fought other hungry animals. But sometimes hungry animals fought against gladiators in contests called venationes ("wild beast hunts"). On rare occasions, the animals were allowed to maul and eat a live human who was tied to a stake.

This relief sculpture from the 2nd century C.E. illustrates what a chariot race in the Circus Maximus might have looked like. The competitors completed seven intense laps in front of a crowd of 300,000.
Bread and Circuses
Roman games included other type of equestrian events. Some races with horses and riders resemble today's thoroughbred horseracing. In one type of race, riders began the competition on horseback but later dismounted and ran on foot to the finish.
Gaming in New Brunswick
Gaming in Canada is governed by the Criminal Code of Canada. Under that statute, generally speaking, gambling is unlawful unless it is conducted and managed by the province (or a body authorized by the province to license gaming on its behalf) or licensed by a provincial government.
Specifically, section 207 allows:
- The government of a province to conduct and manage lottery schemes in accordance with any law enacted by the legislature of that province. [paragraph 207(1)(a)]
- A licensed charitable or religious organization to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in that province if the proceeds from the lottery scheme are used for a charitable or religious object or purpose. [paragraph 207(1)(b)]
- A licensed board of a fair or of an exhibition, or an operator of a concession leased by that board, to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in that province. [paragraph 207(1)(c)]
Under the Gaming Control Act, the New Brunswick Lotteries and Gaming Corporation (NBLGC) is responsible for the conduct and management of all provincial gaming as required by paragraph 207(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The Gaming, Liquor and Security Licensing Branch, created under the Act as a branch of the Department of Justice and Public Safety, is responsible for the regulation and control of provincial gaming as well as the regulation, control and licensing of charitable gaming in the province.

A Video lottery terminal (VLT) is a gaming machine that allows gamblers to bet on the outcome of a video game. VLTs are similar to slot machines, except that a VLT is connected to a centralized computer system that determines the outcome of each wager using a random number generator. Although the outcome of each wager is random, the total amount and number of payouts may be programmed by Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC). The ALC, a crown corporation owned by the four Atlantic Provinces (New Brunwick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island), operates the video lottery program on behalf of the Province.
One of the major initiatives of the responsible gaming policy was the reformation of the VLT program, which was completed by April 1, 2010. Changes to the VLT program included:
- Restriction of VLTs to age-controlled environments.
- A 50% reduction of the number of VLT sites in New Brunswick (from 625 sites to a maximum of 300 sites).
- A 25% reduction of the number of VLTs in the Province (from 2,650 to a maximum of 2,000 terminals).
- Changes to the number of VLTs allowed at each site.
- Changes to the siteholder commission structure.
- Implementation of an annual registration fee.
- Implementation of responsible gaming requirements into the VLT program.
- The development and incorporation of business and performance standards for the VLT program.
- VLTs were introduced in New Brunswick in 1990.
- The NBLGC does not directly operate the video lottery program. The ALC operates provincial video lottery program on behalf of the Province.
- The Gaming, Liquor and Security Licensing Branch, (Department of Justice and Public Safety) is responsible for the regulation of video lottery, which includes the registration requirements of video lottery siteholders.

Pari-mutuel betting on horse racing in Canada is regulated and supervised by the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). The NBLGC is not directly involved in this form of gaming.
The Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission, established in 1994, has jurisdiction to govern, regulate and ensure the integrity of harness racing in the Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). Canadian Professor to talk on ‘Greek games and gladiators’

The visiting lecturer will be the Professor of Classics at the University of Winnipeg, Mark Golden.
Professor Golden has held Fellowships in several countries, and has delivered lectures in named lecture series in the United States and Canada. In 1992 he and his family spent two months in Armidale as a Visiting Fellow in Classics at UNE. In 1998 the University of Winnipeg bestowed on him a special award to recognise the excellence of his research.
In the past two decades he has published seven books (three of which were edited with Peter Toohey, formerly of Classics and Ancient History at UNE and now at Calgary). Spanning both the Greeks and the Romans, Professor Golden’s interests have focused on children, sport, and sexuality. His Aspects of Antiquity lecture, at 5.30 pm in The Gallery at UNE’s Earle Page College, will focus on the second of those interests. These lectures are free, and everyone is welcome.
Professor Golden’s interest in children will be to the fore the following day – Friday 13 July – when he will speak on “Children in Latin literature” as part of the weekly School of Humanities Research Seminar series held in Lecture Theatre 3, UNE Arts Building, at 9.30 am.
In this seminar he will lead discussion on some of the issues raised for authors and editors by the phenomenon in recent publishing of “handbooks” – in which authors are required to deal with large topics in a medium-sized chapter – and how the differing approaches taken by contributors may pose problems for the handbook editor.
