For the second consecutive year, Indigenous tribes own and operate five of the top 10 casinos not in Las Vegas, as ranked by USA TODAY’s 10Best.

Each October, USA TODAY recruits gaming industry experts to compile a list of the 10 best casino resort destinations in the United States — with Las Vegas excluded. For 2020, the panel agreed that no casino outside Sin City is better than Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.
Owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Foxwoods has continually ranked on the 10Best list.
“Foxwoods offers 4,500 slot machines — ranging from penny games to $100 minimums — as well as 300 table games, high stakes Bingo at one of the world’s largest Bingo halls, a race book with 50-foot digital projection screens, and the largest poker room on the East Coast,” the experts said in their ranking decision. “Four unique hotel properties and over 30 restaurants make it easy to stay and play.”
Foxwoods is one of two tribal casinos in Connecticut. Mohegan Sun also placed on the 10Best honors, the Mohegan Tribe property coming in at No. 10.
Top Ranked Tribal Casinos
According to the American Gaming Association, there are nearly 1,000 commercial or Native American casinos in the US. The Las Vegas area is home to approximately 50 commercial gaming venues, leaving more than 900 gaming resorts qualifying for inclusion on the USA TODAY 10Best casino list.
It’s a crowded market, with many states at or approaching a saturation point. But Native American resorts continue to stand out. Along with the two tribal casinos in Connecticut, three others owned by Native Americans cracked the top 10.

USA Today released its best casino hotels in the US last month, with Mohegan Sun in Connecticut taking top honors.

This week, USA Today delivered another list of gaming-related rankings. The “10Best Readers’ Choice Awards: Best Casino Outside of Las Vegas 2019” focuses on the gaming experience.
Coming in at No. 1 is the Barona Resort & Casino in Lakeside, California. The tribal property, located 30 miles northeast of San Diego, offers more than 75 table games and 2,500 slot machines.
Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, and Pechanga Resort Casino in California, are second and third. Reno’s Grand Sierra is fourth, and Connecticut’s other tribal casino – Mohegan Sun – rounds out the top five.
10Best.com says it provides “original, unbiased, and experiential travel content,” and that “no business pays to be listed.”
The rankings are formed by the 10Best editorial staff, along with gaming industry analysts. For the casinos outside Las Vegas list, experts from the American Casino Guide, Gaming and Destinations magazine, and Casino Player magazine were brought in. Wizard of Odds’ Michael Shackleford was also consulted.

Of the 10Best non-Las Vegas casinos, five are owned and operated by Native Americans. Affordability is also key for making a good casino resort experience. In Las Vegas, that’s becoming increasingly difficult due to ever-growing resort fees.
Resort fees are as high as $45 a day in Las Vegas at premiere properties such as Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, and Palazzo. But at most tribal casino resorts, those add-on fees are typically much lower – or even nonexistent.

Meanwhile, the Grand Sierra charges a $33/day resort fee, Encore $0, Resorts $19.99, Atlantis $30, and Beau $16.

Resort fee critics say Las Vegas is now run by corporations that cater more to their shareholders than customers. That’s playing into the favor of non-Sin City casinos.

It also offers a range of dining options, from the gastropub Rock & Brews to the upscale steakhouse The Pines. French Lick Resort Casino
While the original grand French Lick Springs Hotel, built in 1845, burned down in 1897, the hotel was rebuilt bigger and better and has grown to become a 3,000-acre resort complex in the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana. The property includes two national historic landmarks, the palatial French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs hotels, which include a 51,000-square-foot casino with around 1,000 slots and video poker machines, 37 live-dealer tables, and a separate, non-smoking gaming room. The resort also features three golf courses, two spas, numerous dining options, kid-friendly activities, horseback riding, and more. And it's an easy drive from Louisville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis. Coronavirus precautions include mask and temperature requirements, and some features are available only to hotel guests.

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino offers two 24-hour destinations to win big in the Sunshine State — one massive site in Tampa, and another in Hollywood between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The Tampa location offers 190,000 square feet of gaming with more than 4,000 slots, more than a hundred table games, poker, and separate areas for non-smokers and high-rollers. The Hollywood location is no slouch either, with more than 2,000 slots and nearly as many table games. Both spots also feature a range of dining options, a spa, and pool. L'Auberge Casino Resort

Mount Airy Casino Resort
What began as an eight-room mountain lodge in 1898 and was later remodeled into the Poconos' largest and swankiest resort in the 1950s was eventually torn down and rebuilt as a hugely popular casino and hotel that opened in 2007. The Hard Rock is taking temperatures, social distancing, and guests are "strongly encouraged to bring their own masks and to wear them as much as possible."
Peppermill Resort Spa Casino
The spacious and luxurious Peppermill Resort Spa Casino offers gamblers in Reno a top-notch destination for gaming. The casino features more than 1,500 slot machines, 48 table games, and a keno lounge, and before coronavirus often hosted tournaments and other special events. The resort features luxe accommodations, a spa and two pools, a range of dining options from quick bites to upscale steak and seafood restaurants, and more than a dozen nightlife venues, including bars, lounges, and a nightclub. Masks, social distancing, and temperature checks are required indoors, and Peppermill has been reconfigured to work at half-capacity.
Resort World Casino New York City
Many people are shocked to learn there's a casino in the outer boroughs of bustling New York City, but the Resort World Casino in Queens — just a short taxi ride from JFK airport — offers some of the best gaming in the region (now with masks, social distancing, and temperature checks required). You'll find more than 6,000 slots, electronic table games, and video poker spread out over three New York-themed floors. There's also a steakhouse and food court and, in more typical times, have plenty of live entertainment. There's no on-property lodging yet, but a Hyatt Regency is scheduled to open in 2021. Until then, there are plenty of nearby hotels and, of course, the rest of New York — along with incredible food, music and other fun things to do — is just a short subway or cab ride away.
MGM Grand Detroit
The Motor City has been slowly and steadily revitalizing. Helping to boost the city's tourism dollars has been the art deco-themed MGM Grand Detroit — one of three casinos in the city. It offers players plenty of gaming options, including 3,500 video slot and poker machines, 143 table games, and an exclusive poker room (closed for the duration). The highly rated hotel also features 400 guest rooms, nine rooftop VIP suites, and 56 corner suites. Sitting on the Ile Notre-Dame across from the Old Port of Montreal, the Casino de Montreal offers five full floors of gaming action and is considered one of the largest casinos on the planet. Taking up the French Pavilion, built for Expo’67, the casino even rates its own street, Rue Du Casino.
